Virginia Cavaliers Preview

The 22nd ranked Miami Hurricanes (5-2, 3-1 ACC) will travel to Charlottesville, Virginia to square off with the Virginia Cavaliers (3-4, 0-3 ACC). The ‘Canes need to take care of business to keep their momentum and ACC Coastal Division hopes alive. The game will be televised by ESPN at noon Saturday, October 30th.

Let’s take a closer look at the Cavaliers statistically.

QB – Senior Marc Verica (6’3, 215) has taken over the reigns at quarterback for the Wahoos, completing 122-of-211 passes (57.8%) for 1489 yards, with eight TDs and six INTs. He’s averaging 212.7 yards per game through the air, and isn’t much of a threat to run out of the pocket. Verica isn’t going to wow you with his athletic prowess or throwing ability.

Virginia ranks second in the ACC in passing offense, averaging 255.1 yards per game.

RB – The Cavaliers have a couple of options when they decide to run the football. Senior Keith Payne (6’3, 255) leads the team in rushing with 471 yards on 96 attempts (4.9 yards per carry avg.) and 10 TDs. He’s averaging 67.3 yards per contest. He’s a big running back, so gang tackling will be at a premium this week. Technically, Perry Jones (5’8, 185, So.) is the starter. He’s carried the ball 71 times for 399 yards. He’s averaging 5.6 yards per rush and 57 yards per game. He’s yet to score on the ground.

Fullback Terence Fells-Danzer (6’1, 235, Jr.) will occasionally line up as a lead blocker. He’s poses very little offensive threat.

The Cavaliers rank seventh in the ACC in rushing, averaging 139.1 yards per game.

WR/TE – Verica has done a decent job of spreading the ball around to his receivers. Leading the way is Kris Burd (5’11, 195, Jr.) with 32 receptions for 472 yards and four TDs. That’s 14.8 yards per catch and 67.4 yards per game. Second on the team in receptions is Dontrelle Inman, hauling in 23 passes for 344 yards and two scores. Junior Matt Snyder has caught 17 balls for 253 yards. Virginia is under a full rebuilding project, so they lack playmakers at this position.

Thirteen other players have recorded at least one catch, with backs, receivers, and tight ends littering the stat sheet.

At tight end, Joe Torchia (6-6, 250, Sr.) has played in four games, catching nine throws for 113 yards. Coulter Phillips (6’6, 245, So.) is getting plenty of playing time, catching eight passes for 69 yards and two TDs.

OL – Virginia has allowed 17 sacks thus far. Maybe that’s because of their youth at tackle. Two second year players hold down those spots, with Oday Aboushi (6-6, 295, So.) lining up at right tackle and Sean Cascarano (6-6, 275, RS Fr.) at left tackle. The Hurricanes should have no problem penetrating the UVA front and causing havoc in the backfield.

The Cavaliers average 27 points per game, ranking ninth in the ACC. They also are 37.5% on 3rd down, ranking seventh in the ACC.

DE/DT – Sacks leader Cam Johnson (6’4, 260, Jr.) has been a bright spot for the defense. He’s totaled six sacks and 11 TFL. The coaching staff has praised Johnson for improving every game. Zane Parr (6’6, 275, Jr.) has 25 total tackles from the other end position, having yet to register a sack.

At tackle, Nick Jenkins (6-3, 280, Jr.) has totaled 26 stops, and John-Kevin Dolce (6’2, 250, Sr.) has totaled 29 tackles.

Miami should have little difficulty running the ball, as Virginia is last in the ACC versus the rush, giving up 211.4 yards per game and allowing 12 rushing TDs.

LB – The Wahoos are switching from 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme, and they simply are having difficulty in finding the right personnel. MLB LaRoy Reynolds (6’2, 220, So.) is adapting nicely, racking up 41 stops, with five of those TFL. He’s also forced a fumble. On the outside, Ausar Walcott (6’4, 230, So.) has 38 tackles and Aaron Talaiferro (6’2, 225, Jr.) has 28, including a forced fumble.

The defense is allowing 24.1 points per game, ranking ninth in the ACC.

CB/S – The UVA secondary is playing well, despite the absence of All-ACC type corner Ras-I Dowling (6-2, 205, Sr.) He’s been banged up and played sparingly versus Eastern Michigan. Chase Minnifield (6-0, 185, Jr.) has four INTs and PBUs, collecting 30 tackles along the way. Devin Wallace (5’11, 205, So.) has spelled Dowling, amassing 23 tackles and breaking up three passes.

At safety, Corey Mosley (5’10, 205, Jr.) has 28 tackles, one forced fumble, and a pass broken up.

The Cavaliers rank tenth is total defense (376.9 yards per game) and second in passing defense (165.4 yards per game) in the ACC.

K/P – Junior Robert Randolph is 5/8 on field goals, with a long of 44 yards. He’s converted on all 24 PAT attempts. Chris Hinkebein is 0-for-2 on FGs, missing two from 50+ yards out.

Jimmy Howell is having a fantastic season at punter, punting 28 times for a 43.6 yard average, with five being downed inside the 20.

Punt/Kickoff Coverage and Returns – Minnifield returns punts, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt for a total of 76 yards on 11 chances. Punt coverage has allowed only 10 returns for 119 yards.

Raynard Horne returns kicks, getting 17 chances and returning them for a total of 454 yards (26.7 avg.) and a TD. Perry Jones has eight for 140 yards, and Fells-Danzer has two returns for 70 yards and a score.

The Cavaliers allow an average of 22.1 yards per return (556 yards total).

  1. Good break down mm01. It’s all about us in this game. Come out with some fire, run the ball and wear them away.

The obvious factor is continuing to run a good game plan and play with intensity. limit mistakes and turnovers and keep the goal of this season in mind. Win the coastal and get a rematch with the trailer trash from Trailerhassee.

Bg – Also got a couple recruiting questions for you.

    J. Davis is he playing up at Milford? Have checked the stats and only saw his name in the first two games. Nothing since. Also is he coming in January and is he really 6′ 4″ now at this point (since multiple sites are saying that and to me that would mean WR vs. DB)?

How many silents/leans would you say we have. I can only think of 1 (maybe 2) and I ask because I think our record will then be real important in how we finish this class (which I know is always the case but with the low number of schollies even moreso).

And speaking of schollies, I keep hearing 15 but I have a feeling it will be like 18 when all is said and done (we need to weed out those transfers early since next year will be a big exodus and I would love to have the extra bodies in a year earlier). Do you agree?

  4. who are you thinking might transfer?

  5. WRs, possibly a disgruntled freshman (though I can easily see that working out), and maybe an LB or TE (though that I doubt)

I mean I say no more than 2 but I wouldn’t be surprised.

The way he played that slant pattern was textbook, lol, you can see it better on those highlights bg put up from rusty’s competition, like i think it was gino saying “tj yates became tj YIKES” again on saturday. But it’s all good now, guys are back to holding guys accountable again. whipple can bark all he wants at players but when you see shannon, he’s been waiting for someone to do what vaughn telemaque did. You gotta luv shannon though, not trying to force the issue and try to make guys get hype, like oscar cryer did after georgia scored that touchdown and the whole team went out there. shannon is not looking to be the one who is going to force his team to be emotional, that’s why i like shannon telling the players, make me have fun to night, force me to have fun, and they did that saturday night, even if those other players were there for unc, the game would’ve just been a harder fought game, but one of the unc o-linemen were missing.

brandon harris or ryan hill on greg “not so” little would’ve been a battle, our secondary is legit, it’s not a fluke we’re ranked that high. Come next year, especially if brandon harris leaves, but we’ll see if he wants to pursue what he came to college for or if he goes and gets that money. But if he’s a top pick. I always luved when brandon harris came here, before he committed and they asked him, if patrick peterson committing here had anything to do with his decision, man, b.haris got pissed of real quick, but it’s funny how even now, more than likely patrick peterson will be the 1st db taken, and than if brandon harris comes out, he’ll be taken behind patrick peterson more than likely, that’ll just add more fuel to his fire.

Who’s the better cb, brandon harris or patrick peterson, what i do know is, i’m not trading brandon harris for peterson, would’ve been a hell of a secondary though had pp/pj signed with us, we’d more than likely be rankend #1, imagine that, lol. Anyway we straight with what we got.

This one guy said the best d-tackle we got on the team is luther robinson, and that might not be to far off, especially after he gets another year under swasey. Guys will really understand what shannon has been saying about guys being able to rotate d-linemen in and out of their, that’s real important to constantly keeping that pressure on the oppossing qb. I like what i’ve been seeing from tyrone cornelius from day 1, that guy has been physical from the get go. You could see that in the spring game, the 1st play from scrimmage he was in on a sack.

We’re going to have some real physical guys on this team as the season goes on, you gotta luv what shannon is doing with this team, the guys took that next step this last saturday, and it wasn’t about all this talk, it was about guys actually getting it done on the field. I like that #64 o-linemn from unc, that guy is an athlete. butch knows and has an eye for talent, can’t deny that. That guy can look at a guy, and they’ll be groomed and balling. But when it comes to football, i don’t care who you got on the other side, when you got lamar miller on your team, if there is a better athlete on the field at the same time, i’d like to see em.

travis benjamin is fast, but when he runs, it’s just not the same as when miller is taking off. Guys have to make diving and flying tackles, because they know, miller time is pulling away. Seems like every time miller breaks on, it gets called back.

  7. I can see a wide out transfering, but at the same time, which one, cause if a wideout can’t see they’ll still have 2 years left and after hank leaves, it’s going to be wide open as far as who’s actually the #1 option out there. So i can’t see a guy like thompkins leaving or even streeter, than when you add in allen hurns getting burn. i can tell you this much though, alot of the younger guys on this team are already leaders. Guys like eduardo clements, mcdermont, linder, cornelius, bunche, feliciano, we all know about kevin nelson and what he brings from a mental standpoint. kelvin cain just gets the job done thus far, jimmy gaines. This 2010 class, like eduardo said is the take over class, just wait until next year. These guys not waiting, and come next year, they taking somebody’s spot.

  8. From Ferman…

Here is the skinny on the sideline theatrics Reply

    ——————————————————————————–
Best I can gather, Telamaque, who clearly is trying to be a leader on this team, went over and told the offense lets go, lets get some touchdowns, we dont need field goals, or something along those lines.

Then the defense gave up that 80 yard run and some of the offense guys went back at him and told him to make a tackle.

VT was already hot over the play and those comments got him stoked up pretty good and D Berry had to intervene in some way shape or form.

Whipple was kind of caught in the middle but I dont think he was all that involved.

Nah it was a misprint. JD is not 6’4”. He’s doing very well a Milford on BOTH sides of the ball. He’s a JET but raw as DB. Plan on him being here in the Spring.

How many silents/leans would you say we have. I can only think of 1 (maybe 2) and I ask because I think our record will then be real important in how we finish this class (which I know is always the case but with the low number of schollies even moreso).

Hard to say. Especially with the tuff stretch we went through after the FSU game. I’d say at least 1or 2.

Scholly numbers will depend on attrition…who stays and who goes.

  10. That’s not exactly how it went down. It wasn’t just VT, it wasnt just on the sideline and it wasn’t directed at whipple.

  12. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Cal, I don’t think BH is leaving. I think with the way the team has grown he doesn’t want it to end just yet. I’d say the same for TB as well. He’s just starting to develop his potential and put it on the field. He needs another year to really make the most of the leap to the NFL.

WRs transferring would be dumb as hell right now. With the offense getting together, Hankerson leaving and their not being a clear cut #1 or #2 really, NOW IS THE TIME, esp. for Streeter and KT, Davon too.

It just boggles my mind that Streeter and KT can’t block well enough to get on the field. Just mind-boggling, makes me wonder about Hill, truth be told, cause NONE of our WRs are good blockers.

  13. That Minnifield kid’s pops was a dynamo CB for the Browns, back in Truth’s day.

lol, all i want to see is power football, which will open it up for the speed and talent we got at wide receiver and runningback. I’m still pissed it seemed like fsu beat us using only about 3 or 4 plays all game. Back when we were going thru our offensive struggles because it seemed like our oc’s didn’t have enuff plays, and that safety sensabaugh from unc, now with the cowboys said, they/us, we only run about 3 or 4 plays, we not scared of them, and than they came out and beat us, well now, it seems like we got to many plays. Just go power I football for most of the game, and every now and than let whipple call one of those wide open wide receiver plays he likes to run.

whipple might actually turn out to be a good oc the sooner he goes to a physical offense. A physical offense is a championship offense.

By the way, i like tyler horn, he doesn’t plan on giving up his spot to brandon linder no time soon. In fact, hell, seantrel and linder might just be our tackles next year and just slide jermain johnson to the inside, that guys plays physical and likes to throw his weight around in there. Come next year, we should be straight, we’re already straight on the o-line if you ask me. All horn has done is come in, and play real solid ball, and for him to grade out at 97 this week, that’s what competition does for you. He’ll be ready come next year, and if he gets stronger in the weight room, he may just be a 1st team all-acc center come next year. He’s the type player that hasn’t been on this team in a long time, a third/4th year starter. That’s been a rarity these days around here.

So physically he’s ready and mentally. That 2006 recruiting class had franklin and figs, matt bosher, ryan hill, kylan robinson, cmac, richard gordon, josh holmes, those are the seniors now. When you throw in guys like sam shields, lesean mccoy, epps, fox and baby j, that class wasn’t that bad, at least the guys that either redshirted from that class are contributing now, just wait until shannon gets that type of talent under his belt, this program is going to be rolling for a long time coming. We’ll be alright as long as shannon is here, believe that, that fsu game put a sour taste in alot of people mouth, 2 victories later, people are starting to understand where the problems are.

If mark whipple has any aspirations of coaching at the next level, he’ll trim down his playbook, go to a power based offense and run his passing plays off of that. That play to asante cleveland was actually the same play he ran against oklahoma last year whee epps caught it for a touchdown.

When UM lost to Florida State by 28 points back on Oct. 9, several former Hurricanes came out and criticized the lack of effort and passion they saw from their former team. Coach Randy Shannon said he didn’t see enough internal leadership and policing from his players.

Last Saturday’s 33-10 rout of North Carolina was almost the antithesis of the FSU loss. Players weren’t just bouncing around, arguing with each other on the sidelines and creating big plays, they were drawing 15-yard penalties for excessive celebration. It was almost as if some old Hurricane spirits had taken over the bodies of the current Canes and made them enthusiastic and fun to watch again (Hey, it’s almost Halloween, give me a pass).

Turns out, what really happened was that a visit from former Hurricane Antrel Rolle helped a rather large awakening take place in Coral Gables. Rolle met with the entire team and then privately with the defensive backs to deliver a strong message.

What was it? “Just to play for each other, have each other’s back, have coach Shannon’s back and our coaching staff’s back most of all,” cornerback Brandon Harris said Tuesday. “The main thing we talked about was how we’ve been taking a back seat and letting our coaches take the heat when as a team we have to get some things together and get some things going. You sort of hear a lot about what old guys used to do. But just to hear it come out of his mouth, it was impressive…

“He spoke his honest opinion on some issues. It was true, it was undeniable. As a team, finally hearing that from an outside influence, but also somebody still close to the family, it kind of hit close to home. Usually when you hear things you’re able to wash it off. But hearing it from a guy of his caliber, who has been here, who has been a part of the program, it really stuck with us. In the back of our minds we were kind of like ‘Man, we can’t let these guys down.’ They’ve established this program to where it is and we have to keep it going. He said a lot of good things to us. A lot of guys took it and ran with it the rest of the week.”

Rolle has worked out in Coral Gables over the last few summers since he left for for the NFL in 2005 (8th pick overall by Arizona) and is widely admired by players in UM’s secondary. Senior Ryan Hill said chose to come to UM because he thought he could develop into a player like Rolle, who was a vocal leader during his time at UM.

“I’ve been talking to Antrel for awhile,” Hill said. “I know his mindset. He has that killer instinct, that dog, typical Miami player. For him to come back and talk to us, I felt like guys bought into it. One of the things he mentioned was that he didn’t think we were having fun… he put the dog back in us.”

That dog showed up right around the second quarter when the Hurricanes started bopping their heads and dancing during a North Carolina injury timeout. According to Hill, it even spread into a new team chant led by Spence.

“Sean does a good job getting the defense ready,” Hill said. “We have his little chant now: ‘Up and down, round and round.’ “If it takes us having fun the rest of our games, I’m sure you guys will see a sequel to that.”

Although the fun went a little too far for officials last Saturday (when Harris drew a 15-yard penalty for playing the role of a horse getting whipped by teammate Sean Spence after his interception), it doesn’t appear as if Shannon is going to curtail the emotion or enthusiasm. After the game, Harris said he expected to be punished by Shannon for his antics. But it turns out, he wasn’t. Shannon gave him a pass.

“Coach said he just wants me to remember next time not get penalized,” Harris said. “But the fun, the dancing? He’s all for that as long as we keep winning.”

    No lies.

  35. Just finished watching the Heat game and they played poorly as expected seeing that Wade was out the entire preseason and Miller is out.

As bad as they played in the first half, especially the first qt, they still had a chance at the end.

Mike, defensively they are going to be very good, but it was obvious on the offense end that they were not comfortable, no continuity.

They need an upgrade at PG cause Aroyo aint the answer. Rondo used him like a condom.

On another note, Boise St is mauling LA Tech! Not fair at all. Lol!

  39. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Watching the 2nd half and I’ll tell you, the day J12 learns how to move the defense with his eyes to open up routes and WRs will be the day he becomes an almost unstoppable QB. I don’t know which part it is: comfort and knowledge of the system, confidence in his WRs and their routes, confidence in the OL’s protection….maybe all three.

But that’s the next step for him. On that 3rd and 7 after the penalty against BH, when he dumped the ball to Berry over the middle when he was thoroughly covered, J12 TOTALLY MISSED Cleveland in the flat to the left who was wide open. I don’t know if Berry was the first option or what but J12 seemed to think he was.

That’s the next step for him, along with improving that play-fake. I think it’s a confidence issue with the OL, cause sometimes he works through his reads, other he doesn’t.

Not intending to start the J12 talk, it’s just an observation. Whipple called a very good play on that one, although I’d use Miller or James instead of Berry on 3rd down, with a better route.

  40. bahamaCane, i happen to come across that boise st/louisianna game and i thought it was some replay of something from a few years ago, i mean what the hell is that, they should drop out of the top 10 just for playing on tuesday, who actually scheduled a game on tuesday. crazy, but who knows what’s up!

  41. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Bahama, do you know how happy EVERY TEAM in a major conference would be to have La Tech this week, AND HAVE IT COUNT FOR YOUR CONFERENCE RECORD.

That says it all. They barely beat a young VT team in the 1st game of the season as their claim to fame. Now they want to play one more legit team at the end of the season and try to say they should win the NC.

    GETTHAFUKOUTTAHERE!!!!

Same goes for TCU. They should both join the Big 12.

  42. Cav, Boise St wont go no further in the polls than they are right now!

If they want to be taken seriously, then whats taken them so long to move to another conference with solid teams.

What you think their record would be is they played in the ACC?

  43. Nashvillecane says:

Cav I don’t think the texas12 would take them for the simple fact one of them 2 might mess around and win the conf…he’ll Texas in deep enuff dodo losing to a gene chizik less iowa st team…lol…I know ppl like to hate on Shannon rite now but he ain’t loss to no team like that or James Madison, or Jacksonville st

  44. nashvilleCane, and i don’t see that happening under shannon either. What i do see happening is shannon taking this team to where he’d thought they’d be by now. But he realizes the process, although allen bailey doesn’t dominate like he did saturday all the time, he is one of those guys that like jacory harris said, when the question was asked to him, when did you realize you were in college, he said “when i saw allen abiley”.

cav, shannon is already putting it out there that we’re going to continue to throw those short passes, translation, “we’re reeling in the offense from here on out.

  45. CanesCanesCanes says:

Jello – (from last post) – yes I did click on it and went to the next screen before I realized it was spam. Had to go into my FB settings to remove the spammers “permissions” you’ve probably already done the same.

Also, I don’t get how some dork gets his picture into my FB profile as my album/me. Removed it. I can’t post pictures of myself on social networking sites because of my job, still don’t understand how someone gets access to that.

  46. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, lol, that’s true. But still, they have to play tough games in AND out of conference. OU played Cinci at Cinci this year, Miami at Miami last year then went into their conference schedule. TX played UCLA. UCLA played TX and Houston in between conference games.

Boisie plays LA Tech and TCU beats up on SMU. WTF is that?

Let’s ee them play the Big 12 in conference then go on the road and play OSU or Nebraska or USC , Miss St. and FSU for their non-conference games then come back to the conference and win out.

    Bull shiiiiittttt.

  47. Nashvillecane says:

Calvin I’m telling ya…IF we can get the pass attempts under 25 a game WE good from here on out…we need 45-50 runs per game PERIOD

  48. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Cal, the day Bailey learns how to disengage and use his agility to get around blockers as well as he uses his strength to run them over, he’ll be a total package DE. Maybe not a Julius Peppers but he’ll be a very hot commodity.

  49. LMAO @ Bahama!

    Used’em like a condom… damn!

    LOL

  50. Nashvillecane says:

I know what u trying to say cav but bsu and tcu would love to play in a bsc conf but who gonna invite em??? Hell those 2 would be better of getting togather and forming they own conf!

  51. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, I’d say around 30 passes and 35 runs. The thing though is from what formation is he passing. Empty backfield shotgun or under center isn’t working well with him or the OL right now. Play-action is working beautifully. So if 25 of those passes are from play-action, either under center or from the gun, we’ll be straight.

  52. Boise St o-line and d-line looks small. I thought my eyes were deceiving me so i looked at their roster and they have 3 linemen, 2 DT and 1 OT, over 300lbs on their entire roster. The rest of their linemen are in the 275-285 range.

  53. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, those teams haven’t proven anything outside of a one game format. TCU beat Clemson last year in week 2 or something 14-10. Now you give the rest of teh ACC 8 good looks at you and see what they come up with. Neither Boisie nor TCU is going undefeated in the ACC or the Big East, let alone the Big Ten, SEC or Pac-10.

Ultimately I say THEY DON’T WANT TO JOIN a real conference cause they’ll start losing and miss all that BCS money. Right now they can have their cake and eat it too.

  54. Nashvillecane says:

Cav I think we been bout 40-45 runs vs 30-35 pass pet game, if 5-7 of those passes are converted to STRONG run plays we’d be a whole lot better off imo…less stress on 12 and moe touches for millz/james and the he can even throw my boy COOP a bone lol

  55. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Bahama, that’s what would catch up with them after a couple of weeks in a major conference. Esp. cause the people backing them up are that size or smaller and younger.

  56. Nashvillecane says:

Lol…cav…I ain’t trying to argue with u on this for the next month or so.. so I’ll say u right!!! Lol

  57. Nashvillecane says:

Btw I ain’t saying they would go undefeated I’m just sayin a bcs conf don’t want em…or else they’d holla at them to join

Haha, very true. James needs more touches if you ask me. He’s right in between Miller and Berry with speed and strength explosiveness.

But I recall Shannon saying he’d want his RBs to get 20 touches, so we’re still a ways away from that goal. lol

  59. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, lol, I don’t know. I could see both sides of it. To me the TCU thing is just REEE-DIK-U-LOUS. How in the hell are all those schools going to be in the same state and only TX and TT play each other?? That’s crazy. At least the FL and Cali schools play each other for the most part.

TX needs to get off its high horse, esp. with the current state of the program. lol

I thought Watkins was a lost cause?

No cause is lost until the ink is dry. Think of it this way. He hasn’t visited here as much as he’s visited other places. YET he ALWAYS mentions us in his Top 3 and says we are recruiting him hardest. His dad is a Canes FAN and so is he. If Clemson continues sub-par and we pick it up, come December we’ll have some great pitches because Hank for sure is leaving and their will be some open competition at WR.

I’d say Clemson leads now slightly but let it all play out.

  63. thanks, bg.

    You da man.

    We love you, too, Este.

    haha!

    No homo!

  64. when did you realize you were in college, he said “when i saw allen abiley”.

    LOL. Classic.

  65. And if that was the real Canez1 up there?… what happened to your pretty ladies witht the nice “eyes”? Dam it.

  66. Cav, looks like you were right about Whipple being told by Shannon to reign in the long ball, call more play action and short to intermediate passes.

“Speaking of running the ball, Shannon said the ‘Canes are committed to that and the 44 runs against the Heels were by design. He also said you can expect to see more of the passes to running backs and tight ends underneath that were effective Saturday.”

  67. I hope the city of Miami holds up because of the Heat loss. I am sure the fans are ready for a refund, you know 1 game out of 1,000 and the Heat is a total bust….how will a Miami fan survive?

I am way over this blue turf thing and the team that plays there. Get real turf, play in a real conference, and maybe more people will watch. The novelty has worn off.

    GO CANES!!!

  68. The blue turf makes Boise St. games unwatchable.

  69. DZ LOL That was me.

Not sure what happened. Must be some kind of sabotage.

    I’m on it!

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  71. Don’t do that again Canez1…

    your comments aren’t as interesting:)

  72. DATcane with all the news fit to use, thank U!

And it’s good to see that we are going to stay focused on running and the short to intermediate passing but we don’t know who said what to who. Maybe it’s Whipple finaly getting his way? Maybe not. But I don’t really care or believe what coaches and players are saying anymore, I’m still in the prove it on the field (and for more than one week at a time) stage.

Anyways its good to see everyone smiling and having fun:)

Doesn’t everyone know that’s when The Biggest Loser is on?!

  77. JSQ it was on the blue turf boise wore blue and LA Tech was red white and blue…..my eyes kindly asked me to turn that cr@p off!

  78. Yeah, guys, I was kidding, I keep sportscenter on while I sleep and I caught a few highlights from the game when I was waking up this morning.

I’m just hoping WE never have to play on that ugly field again.

I do like the ESPN commercial where their coach is telling the guys about the new carpet in his house and it is that neon blue. A sense of humor is good.

  79. bg, what are your thoughts on Carl Williams?

  80. OOOOOOH that was it.

He’s an under the radar type. I wasn’t overly impressed with his film. There are MUCH better out there that we are in it for. I know he’s reported to be visiting soon for an official, but we don’t normally do officials in-season because they coaches and players are limited with their time as they are in game prep mode. I don’t think he’ll be in the class.

    We’ll see though, never know…

    Go Canes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  98. The Noles – NC State game tomorrow is going to be a good one. I dont know if NC State guys upfront can handle the Noles big o-line, but its going to be fun to watch!

    Go NC STATE!

    Go Canes!

  99. Is anyone concerned about the lack of “specialness” in the Canes special teams?

The KR and PR unit has done squat since Ohio State and the coverage is average at best.

Why isnt ST getting better? Last yr RS blamed it on not having the right personnel because of injuries. What the excuse now?

  100. Randy, I don’t care if people b!tch and moan here and there (if I can walk away from them at a tailgate and be with the happy people) as long as they love the ‘Canes through thick and thin. Some of the biggest supporters complain the most and it’s because they care. That’s especially true for some of the biggest complainers on here.

The people that bother me are the ones who are all about the ‘Canes and Coach when they are winning but can’t be bothered to take AN HOUR LUNCH TO WALK TWO FREAKING BLOCKS (that’s how far my office is from the restaurant) now that there are two losses. I don’t care if people go to complain to him. I’m sure he expects that. Either way, people should just show up.

  106. Hurricane Randy says:

Some very interesting comments by Shannon on a well known paysite about the freshman that have contributed this year…..but I hear that only counts if they are playing against us.

  107. Hurricane Randy says:

    JSQ,

I’m not talking about the folks on this board. I know we are all Canes fans, I prefer to accentuate the positives, that’s all.

Some of the comments are warranted and I know it is only discussion and debate. Those comments aren’t what I’m referring to.

I read lots of blogs and listen to lots of radio and that’s the main target of my comments about fans(haters)

I’m not questioning anyone’s credentials as a Canes fan on this blog. I don’t always agree with Truth or Canez1 and some others but I know they love the Canes as I do and want to see them succeed as much as I.

Just see things from the glass half full perspective, I try to do that for everything not just our Canes, that’s all I’m saying.

  108. Hurricane Randy says:

The Eye of the Hurricane is the most fair and balanced blog I read, you should read some of the Texas and Clemson blogs. Gators blogs are hot and heavy, I have even found a Fire Urban Meyer site. LOL

It’s surprising how much Meyer, Brown and now Stoops have forgotten about coaching in the last few weeks.

How many championships do they have combined and now they can’t do anything right. It’s ridiculous.

  109. Hurricane Randy says:

    Further more ,

Everyone wants Peterson from Boise St. At one time everyone wanted Hawkins from Boise State and look what he has accomplished at Colorado…..nothing! and will probably lose his job at season’s end.

I think the internet has hurt the college game as much as it has helped it.
Too much negative in our society, people are angry and take it out on the blogs as a way to release it without having to face the responsibility for what they say and the attitudes they present. ( See Mars column)

I’ll get off the soapbox now and step away…..LOL

  110. Bahama stop your BYTCHIN!!!

I am still trying to enjoy the FAMU win……

    ;)

I agree with you guys. Our special teams now blows in every facet.

    Don’t worry Fluzzis got this.

RS’s last comment on ST’s went a little something like he was resting guys vs. FSU on ST’s because of the long year.

We don’t need no stinkin ST’s.

Bahama, I’m telling you that Duke game was an experiment. Shannon said, “Okay Mark, run your Mini-Martz offense and let’s see how well it does. If it works we’ll run it. If it doesn’t we’re running play-action, ball control underneath and you’ll pick and choose when you call the long ball plays.”

I could see it in Shannon’s whole demeanor. He was half-watching the plays 50% of the time the offense was on the field, even on 3rd and 4th.

Now that he’s proven his point, both with Duke and UNC, Whipple has no choice. He has no leverage any longer. Shannon’s in charge.

  119. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Does ANYONE know why Shannon keeps making excuses for Fluzzi??? Anyone??? It’s mind-boggling how Fluzzi’s unit keeps fukin up in one way or another and Shannon always finds an excuse for something other than the obvious fact that FLUZZI SUCKS.

  120. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Randy, as a former Chris Petersen promoter, along with my man Canez1, back before anyone really knew how good Boisie was, the facts are he took over a program that was already built and running at a high level.

Now, he’s done an excellent job of maintaining that. No doubt about it. But people only look at whoever’s winning NOW not at what was happening before they arrived.

Funny how Oscar, TX et al with all those top-5 recruiting classes suddenly can’t figure out how to stop losing to supposedly less talented teams.

Once Shannon gets this thing really going, which it now finally is, except for Fluzzi, we’ll be perennial top-3 pre-season and things will be back to normal and the haters will have to eat it, 365 days a year.

A true statement is that the short term memory goes before the long term memory for Alzheimer’s patients.

The article I referenced was about Shannon talking about the number of freshman who have played and about their contributions to the team when they play.

    Canez1

He won’t leave Boise. He sees what happened to Hawkins and won’t budge.

  124. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Joe Rose is talking about the winner of Utah-TCU playing Bama or AUB or someone. Is he smoking crack?? Utah barely beat Pitt!!! If TCU doesn’t beat them BOisie has no claim to playing for anyone’s NC.

But what’s funny is Kirk Herbi and Big Dog are trying to make an argument FOR them but in the same breath talking about How Oregon, Mich. St and Aub will probably have a loss.

WELL THAT’S THE WHOLE FUKIN POINT!!!!! They actually play REAL TEAMS. They don’t play LaTech and Hawaii and Nevada and Fresno St. for their fukin conference showdowns.

This shyt is ridiculous borderline irrational.

  125. Hurricane Randy says:

  126. Hurricane Randy says:

Boise State is the flavor of the year for ESPN, it is easy to see and they have been slurping on them even before the season started and that guy Norrie I thought he was slurping on them so much that he had a man crush on the QB Moore and the coach too. Maybe they should connect with Meyer, Tebow and the Pouncey twins. Looks like a match made in heaven.

Randy this year’s Utah team is a far, far cry from that 2009 squad. I mean, little to no comparison. Watch the highlights from the Pitt game then watch the highlights of that Bama game. Totally different teams.

    >>>>>>>

Whittingham’s a great coach no doubt. But y’all will see soon enough that you won’t want anyone more than Shannon. It’s taken a minute or two but now we’re on track. A few players here and there, firing Fluzzi, and sending Whipple to Stanford so he can study Jim Harbaugh’s system and we’ll be stompin on everyone.

  134. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

But really both Petersen and Whittingham are cut from the same coaching and personality cloth as Shannon.

Jumping to the Pac-10 will be difficult for Utah. They don’t re-stock talent quickly. It takes four, five years to really put together a serious team. Then again, the exposure might open up more recruiting doors, so it could pay off in the longer run.

Philly, it’s amazing how people watched them barely beat VT, the VT lost to JMU, then started to find their way, but Boisie goes on and plays there regular cream-puff schedule and they still get credit as a top team.

ECU has beaten VT in recent years, as well as UVA and NCST this year. But they continue and play legit teams all through the year. Do those wins automatically make them so great?

No, cause they don’t play anyone in their conference. When they beat a legit team it’s just looked at as a one-off, not some trend.

Shyt’s crazy. And all the teams that play real conference schedules, real road games, and have one or even two losses, like OSU, OU, S. Carolina, Bama et al will be completely disserved if Boisie gets to play for a NC and they don’t.

The guy has it made up there and that program is hitting on all cylinders.

I don’t worry about culture shock so much.

    Winning trumps all.

Randy, Whittingham’s excellent, don’t get me wrong.

Peteresen does have it made. And they’re very well-paid from what I understand. No reason whatsoever to leave. The only thing leaving would do is add pressure and expectations.

Canez1, “ghettoriffic”…..LOL…I have heard it all. LMAO.

I like the idea but damn, couldn’t you pick a word like “Peerless” or something. Peerless Price is one of the all-time great names.

    But Wonderful Terrific???? lolololol

  143. Randy, ye defintely caught them at the wrong time. Its a shame cause I thought we were the best team in baseball on paper. A shame I was at that game 6 too.. missing the Miami game. So Upsetting :(

  144. Cav your right. Peerless was classic!!

Wonderful great fantabulous terrific…..not so much

    LOL

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  145. Cav not only will those teams be disserviced if Boise gets to go over those teams you mentioned, but itll be a hoax. If Boise would win a NC itd be a “told ya so” but it just wouldnt be deserved without going through the rigors of a real conference schedule

  146. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Canez, the question is does he go by Wonderful or Terrific??? LOL Or does he just like to be called Josh? lol

If Randy Shannon leaves now, after all the work he put in to get this team on the brink of something great would be devastatingly foolish on his part.

Absolutely about those coaches. But they’ve figured out a system all those other little D-1 schools haven’t, so there’s something there.

  171. Cane Fan KB says:

    @BahamaCane;

Personally I do not think Shannon will go to from UMiami to UMinnestoa but I wont say there is NO possible way he goes there. He would be paid more, deal with less pressure from the fanbase(a 9-3/10-2 season would make him a God) and the strong south florida recruiting base he would bring with him. I doubt it happens, but if Shannon does not make it to the ACCCG then there will be a sector of the fanbase ready to pack his bags and ship him off.

  172. “Minnisota” would be the perfect place for our young ball coach.

A school like that would keep him forever. Expectations are always reasonable and he will get his fair share of fl kids to sprinkle in ala the zookster.

    8-4 Fo life!!!

I will fully endorse that move.

  174. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

CaneFan KB, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY Shannon leaves the U for ANY coaching job for the rest of his life unless he’s fired.

He IS Miami. The only positions he might take other than HC at the U would be something for the Phins, like DC.

That would be funny, seantrel comes from minnesota to Miami. Than shannon turns around and goes from Miami to minnesota. No beaches, they’ll be able to celebrate out their without getting penalties.

The main reason i can’t see shannon leaving is because he’s about keeping his word to the kids, that’s more important than anything.

    ———-

You referring to the 4th down play?

Cal, that’s the key to it right there. He knows it, lived it, eats and sleeps it. These past two weeks have been break-through weeks, and we have to thank FSU for the wakeup call. We’ll be able to pay them back in December.

We’re about four or five players away, and maybe five games, from just shutting fools down and blowing them out everytime we step on the field.

We still have a few holes here and there so I don’t really expect straight-up beatdowns this year but it could happen if Whipple plays his cards right, at the right time that is.

And I personally don’t think he should necessarily trim down his playbook as much as THROW OUT SOME SHYT. haha Then he should go study Harbaugh’s system at Stanford or some real legit NFL systems like Pittsburghs, the NY Giants, the Pats and Jets too. The way they balance run and pass and why and when they call what they call. They’re all power running teams though, make no mistake.

Hell, we have enough talent that he could study the ’99-2001 Rams to learn what to do and when to reign it in. Martz had a great system he just got pass-happy too often.

  196. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

We’ll know Mini-Martz has really absorbed the significance of the running game when he comes out in a split backfield with Miller and James, sends James in motion, then calls a draw to Miller and the OL opens up a hole and he runs right through the defense for 40 yards and a TD.

    THAT will be the day!!!!

Or with the same formation then flexes to an I-formation only to send James in motion and pitches the ball to Miller on the strong side.

There’s so much he could be doing with our personnel.

  197. cav, more like mini-martz is listening now to coach shannon. shannon knows what works against certain defenses. Just look what happened to #47 with the threat of a running back getting the ball, he got suck up just enuff to let cleveland get behind him and jacory put that ball on the money. If you get guys in space, jacory will pick teams apart all day, like that play against ohio st. where he threw that pass to aldarius isolated 1 on 1 against i think #5 for osu. Although aldarius got no real separation, he got enuff space where jacory could lay the ball in there perfectly.

bennie v, as soon as i saw gordon got out and than asante delayed and took off, hmmm, this looks familiar. jacory will almost always look for the 1 on 1 deep ball, just keep gunning it dawg when it’s there, let’s just run the same offense we ran against unc for the rest of the year, even if teams stop it the first few drives, what it’ll do is cost it to be a low scoring game until we start finding holes in there defense. it’ll be that simple. All these receivers running to spots and stopping, that’s garbage to me.

This offense has alot of potential as long as whipple continues to learn an understand that a running game is his best friend, not something you do just because they say you have to, he could’ve run alot of the same plays he ran against unc against osu in the redzone. That’s what we mean by callign plays to jacory’s strength.

  198. We got to many weapons to not be using them. cav, teams will have to account for any combination of runningback we got back their with the exception of patrick hill. But mikes james back there with either miller or berry, teams wouldn’t know what to do if he uses them the right way. We’d confuse alot of defenses and by the time they figure out what’s going on, they should be down by 10 or 14, and than the offense should have them off balance.

When we got osu down 10 to 3 and had the ball, whipple started running that garbage offense, when jacory hit hankerson where he got hit pretty good, from there we had osu on there heels, that 1st offensive series had nothing to do with execution, the players executed what was called, on 2nd down you throw a pass to berry where all he could do was run straight to the sidelines, dumb play. Than you comeback and throw it to chase ford on the other side by himself, just a terrible opening series of plays. Just come out in the power eye and get the line of scrimmage established by your front guys and than go from there. Anyway, that game is over with, we shouldn’t see to many more stupid offensive series play-calls.

That’s why shannon called that time-out, because he knew what whipple was trying to do and he stopped it, they got the offense in a better formation, better play-call and it worked to perfection. whipple has no room to be yelling at jacory the majority of the time. If you replay the majority of college games, you can almost always find somebody open that the qb might been able to throw too, in the case of jacory, often times he’s moving to one side or the other. I’m running with j12 as my qb irregardless, people see, jacory ain’t go nowhere, whipple knows what’s up too. shannon is going to make sure jacory is being put in better positions to succeed.

  199. Hurri that’s a great question.

I want someone who makes the most out of what they have and if they don’t have it they develop their kids into what they need.

Harbaugh, Patterson, Petersen. Someone in that mold who will take the talent we are blessed with down here and develop it.

Someone who knows the assistants they hire and what they bring to the table and not just hopes they know them.

Someone that will take the reigns when something is not right and not just sit back and hope it rights itself.

Recruiting is going to come no matter what down here. That is one thing I am not worried about.

What we need is an experienced coach to come in here with an experienced staff and get this talent rolling.

We need someone who will take charge and pay attention to ALL the details.

You set up a solid program from top to bottom and this bytch will run itself.

Too much talent around here not to.

This is a high profile dream job for the RIGHT crew. It is definitely not what it was 4 years ago.

We just need the right capt and crew and we will be back to reloading and not rebuilding.

RS was a good coordinator that rode the talent he was blessed with. He is just over his head as a hc. Nothing against the man but he is not hc material.

    Not here anyway…..

RS has hitched his wagon to sofla too much.

What stud qb is going come down here to compete from out of state with the home cooking RS is serving?

When is the last time a sofla qb has come out and run a pro offense like it should be run?

This is a huge issue that is going to bite us down the road if things don’t change.

We took a local qb who spent his career out of the shotgun and have tried to mold him into something he is not and will never be and turned him into a poor decision making turnover machine.

Adapt or die. It’s that simple.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  201. CCC,

    Be easy baby.

That’s CANEZ1 steezy. Nobody else’s. That was just between me and him.

I said a while ago that I doubted Randy would ever be a great coach, but that doesn’t matter to me. Mack Brown isn’t great, to me. Neither is Stoops, to me. I think they are beneficiarys of Texas talent, and good staffing, more than great football know-how.
It would matter if we were anywhere other than S Fla, TX, or CA, then it would be a problem. But the southeastern region’s (FL in particular) recruiting base can allow a mere GOOD coach to be a BCS winner, every now and then.
I personally pull for Randy for my own reasons, but I put all my eggs in the basket that talent and supporting staff will cover for Shannon’s shortcomings.

As of right now, I simply can’t think of a credible guy who would take the chump change that UM would dish out.

  202. agreed, Hurri

  206. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

CCC, Canez will learn soon enough that the only people on this staff over their heads are Mini Martz and Fluzzi.

If Shannon was over his head he wouldn’t be telling Mini Martz wtf to do.

Adn as far as his DC days, he was lights out with talent and still turned Medioker’s talent into a BCS caliber D.

He knows EXACTLY what he’s doing EXCEPT for hiring coordinators and assistants. Those are his only real mistakes and they’re somewhat understandable given the money and time frame conditions. However, he’s put himself a year or two behind in some places, like the DL.

But the ship is right now. So once hs starts rilling over everyone people can say…

WELL THEY JUST HAVE ALL THAT TALENT DOWN THERE. IT’S NOT BECAUSE HE’S A GOOD COACH. lol

  207. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Harbaugh’s taken four years to right his ship and the defense is trailing the offense. I’d love to get Stanford in a bowl game or TCU. Boisie can get it too. Love to get them, even with Mini Martz still finding his way. This is the last year that it might be a legitimate game.

    haha

  208. BIG DADDY CANE says:

I’m sticking with Shannon bump another OUTSIDE COACH that doesn’t know jack ish about CANE FOOTBALL. WHO U think got us into playing this type of ball as of now..SHANNON SHANNON SHANNON. We complain so much as a fan base we get amnesia real quick….C’ker put us in this hell hole but Shannon takes the most HEAT for rebuilding a WHOLE NEW TEAM AND ATTITUDE. Same thing with Pres. Obama taking heat for punk ass Bush mistakes. By the way he sits at home and laugh at everyone that criticize Obama…:he says to himself damn some Americans are dumb as hell I got us into this mess but the blame is on the other guy..boy i’m lucky…. Anways back to Cane football…. That’s ok though HATERS AND SO CALLED CANE FANS WILL HAVE ROTTEN EGGS ON THEIR FACE ONEDAY WHEN SHANNON WINS IT ALL..If U don’t remember anything in this life remember this HARD WORK PAYS OFF” ………always have always will.

  209. Mike,

Coker’s inability to evaluate, and develop talent were my only grievance with him. Outside of that, he could’ve stayed as long as he wanted, far as I care.

  210. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, C1 will keep saying that until we win a NC and have a team that looks like 2001. haha

Saban struggled EVERYWHERE until he hit his fourth HC gig at Bama. It took him 3 or 4 years to get LSU in shape. He never succeeded in the NFL or Mich. St.

Petersen was groomed in that system from the Dirk Koetter days in ’98 when he took it over and hired Hawkins and Petersen. Koetter got them respectable, like 8-1, 10-2 then Hawkins took them to 11-2, 12-0, 12-1 then Petersen took over and has more or less maintained that. They went 10-3 a few years ago, something people forget.

Patterson did a similar job, with the defense leading the way, unlike Petersen and Harbaugh.

Funny thing about Harbaugh thouh is they lost to Wake and OU last year. Team’s WE BEAT. Imagine that. So I’m not sure which version of Harbuagh he would want, 2009 or 2010. haha

They’re all fine coaches but we’ll see in the next year or two whether anyone still think they’d do a better job at the U, in any respect than Shannon.

  211. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Hurri, Coker was WORTHLESS in every respect as a HC except for sending kids to class. He possessed ZERO executive ability. I mean ZERO. He didn’t know who to hire or why. He didn’t know who to recruit or why. He didn’t even have enough sense to run the same offense HE RAN under Butch.

You’d think he’d at least know why that system worked, right??

    WRONG.

He was worthless and clueless about everything involved with being a good HC. Just a disgrace.

  212. Actually, the fact that Coker’s players began to start taking on his passive personality, probably was his biggest issue.

  213. Nashvillecane says:

Hurri for the most part the only players that were being “developed” were on shannons side of the ball…and they still come back to this day…futher more check shannons 1st recruiting class and the draft picks that’s bout to come out…Hank, Baily, berry, Franklin, bosher, COOP pre injury, and DVD has come on strong as of late…then u see guys like shields and rphillips startin in the NFL rite now, u gotta give the man alot of credit…and most ppl will except for omar and c1 lol

  214. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Hurri, Stoops has a real system in place. Mack Brown really doesn’t and it has shown this year. Stoops’ problem is he doesn’t get deep enough into his players to convince them losing is not an option. That’s why they always drop a game or two every year.

Honestly, even for the U’s money, the only reason someone else could come in would be because of their experience as a HC. But by Year 6 of the Shannon Era that will be a mute point.

Shannon’s got the goods. It just took a little up and down to get the Bull back and get Mini-Martz under control. It’s off to the races now.

    Believe It!

  215. Cap’n,

I ain’t defending Coker’s coaching prowess. Trust. But he could’ve continued to win, had he known how to at least evaluate & utilize talent, and manage his staff.

  216. Nashvillecane says:

Btw Mike I thot bout u rolling towards the mnts over the weekend as wifey and I celebrated year 1…

Actually, the fact that Coker’s players began to start taking on his passive personality, probably was his biggest issue.

    >>>>>>>>

That’s one of the biggest problems and it showed itself in 2002. After the FL and TN beatdowns this team took a nosedive in intensity and execution for the rest of the year.

Now that Shannon’s got these kids playing like Canes, that loss of intensity ain’t happening often again.

    >>>>>>>>

Yeah, that’s true. He could’ve done a Bobby B for the most part. I’m glad he was that clueless though cause now we have Shannon.

  219. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash, I can’t wait to hear Omar’s excuse when we run the tables this year and start really banging heads next year. He’ll just say “it’s the talent”, or “it’s Whipple” or anything but Shannon. C1 should be interesting to see as well. haha

  220. Nashvillecane says:

And C1 I respect U alot coz u ain’t a Shannon believer but still dropping major loot to go watchem play…and ain’t on here spitting a bunch of bs and not even going to games…

  221. Devin Hester scored all of two TDs in 05′.

    Two. Touchdowns.

Coker and Co. wasted away the greatest weapon we had at the time.

  222. “Bump another outside coach who doesn’t know Cane football?”

I wonder what you were saying about Schnelly, JJ, and Erickson? Good theory.

  223. Nashvillecane says:

Cav Omar always bring up 2 player to TRY to prove a point about player underdevelopement…James Bryant and Willie Williams, BUT NEVER brings up the players that made it against the odds Beason comes to mind…now Sam and Phillip…hell even bruce johnson still on the giants roster. Like u or cal said Sam ought to give shannon a % of his contract for 1st instilling some discipline I his life and 2nd him starting in the NFL…but in C1 terms he JAG!!! lol

  224. Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer says:

Nash or Hurri, look at it this way. It’s not easy to see success before it’s actually successful. Petersen and Shannon were both in the same boat before they became HCs. Shannon ran the defense well, despite Coker’s overall ineptitude with talent, tactics, motivation, assistants etc. The D still balled. Petersen took over a well-oiled machine and make it run even better, arguably.

But before they each became HCs neither had any more of a claim to being a good or great HC than the other. Canez certainly didn’t see Petersen before three or four years of Boisie ballin out under his leadership. Shannon was in a similar position, even worse because his program was on a severe decline. But based on their performance as coordinators, you’d expect each of them to have a firm control on at least half of the team, right?? The rest would be speculation.

So one walks into a well-oiled machine and the other walks into a broke down, dilapidated project.

C1 says Shannon’s over his head based on what he’s seen on the field for the last 3 years, NOT based on what he saw from the defense when Shannon was in charge of it.

Now, in year four we’re starting to see the emergence of the entire team, with the defense leading the way, looking great, which somehow doesn’t reflect on Shannon’s ability or inability according to the naysayers.

The offense has suffered from his first mistake- Nix. Now, Mini-Martz has more creativity than Nix but puts the dart before the horse. So the OFFENSE has sputtered and choked, the unit Shannon has basically left up to Mini-Martz. Until this past week.

Now the entire team is being shaped according to Shannon’s will and vision. Once we start rolling through teams and the offense is executing like the defense, I wonder what people will say.

There was no real ground for the skepticism in the 1st place, esp. given the condition of the program Shannon inherited. Conversely there was no ground for predicting Petersen’s quick success.

No one saw Petersen coming, just like no one can really say Shannon’s not cut out for the gig after 3 years into the rebuild. Consistency is the thing that takes the longest to build. Just ask Mack Brown….haha

NOW THAT’S THE TRUTH!!!! I was more happy we beat UNC just cause he made that trip that anything else. lol

I wouldn’t have done it, straight up. I had ZERO confidence in Mini-Martz.

I give him a hard time abou Shannon but I have to hand it to him on that move. Balls of STEEL!! Or just crazy or both. lol

I think I still owe him a dinner at Morton’s though. Might have to go double or nothing with this rebirth. What you say Canez1??

“Bump another outside coach who doesn’t know Cane football?”

I wonder what you were saying about Schnelly, JJ, and Erickson? Good theory.

    >>>>>>>

Well, Schnell and JJ litereally BUILT IT, so there was no such thing as Hurricane Football to be known before them. Erickson didn’t know it well enough to ride the bull and we paid for it.

BUTCH, however, did know what it was and rebuilt it. Shannon’s doing the same following in the footsteps of another “outsider”…lol Even though he should’ve been an insider.

  227. Nashvillecane says:

Cav speakin of “coach February”, Mack Brown how long was he at ut before he beat ou or made it to a title game…hell stoops beat the mess outta him for 5-6 strait years even tho brown had better over all talent…then he turns vy lose and bfoe u know it he’s raising the crystal ball

  228. Hurri I agree none of those guys will be available. We are going to ride or die with RS unless something crazy happens this year. I think we have a couple losses coming one way or another. Hope I’m wrong!

Good convo boys. Everyone except CCC that is. Way to try and dick up a good back and forth. I was asked to give my opinion. You don’t like what I have to say scroll on by just like I do to your posts. It’s pretty easy give it a shot.Plus you won’t have to get your feelings hurt all the time.

It’s ok. everythings going to be alright.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  229. Canez1, impatients has set in with you, but it won’t be to long from now before shannon makes a believer out of you too. Had it not been for the way these guys came out against fsu, it would be a different story, but that’s the kind of azz whoppin it takes for a team this young and guys trying to learn what it really takes to be a UM player. The defense is basically back, i’m not sure how this defense will look come next year because of guys like ryan hill, dvd, cmac, allen baileyand maybe even brandon harris, who always did say, you only get to go to college once, but this year, the defense is doing it’s thing out there for the most part and will be steady as the season goes on.

Before the unc game, we kept saying, if we run basically the same offense that we ran against oklahoma last year, we should win, and that’s basically what it took. That yahoo offense whipple likes to run gives the better teams more opportunities to score, but when we tone it done, our execution percentages go way up, and our offensive players become more physical. cav said something, and that’s what i’m looking at too, will shannon just go ahead and say, we’re a running team 1st, because i’ve said it before, jacory normally thorws most of his interceptions early in games, so if whipple is smart, he’d run the ball 3 straight times early so jacory can get his nerves & mind right and than do his thing.

Remember the fsu game last year, whipple really didn’t call that good of a game, play-acion was working, but if you remember, on 1st down we were killing fsu, and on some 3rd downs, but i remember one of the announcers saying, why running anything else, play-action is killing this team. whipple has been getting questioned from day 1 as an oc by alot of announcers, not that those guys know it all, but alot of them have seen enuff football to know when they see an oc getting away from what’s been successful all game.

  230. Cal lol I want nothing more than to be proven wrong about RS and co.

    I’m waiting……

IMO no one leaves early. I think everyone who is eligible comes back to finish this thing off.

    That’s my hope anyway.

Hey corch, you wanted to see me…?

    Hilarious!

  232. I know dawg, and i’m not drinking the kool aid either, i’m looking at this whole thing realistically though. How long was butch davis here, some say it took him 6 years, so he actually wouldn’t have won a championship although robbed in year 6 until his 7th year here. ANd let’s forget about the mack brown comparisons, that guy has never been a good coach in my book, he’s a good football program manager is what he is, but a great coach, lol. Had it not been for vince young, he would still be championshipless. He’ll keep a strong team for the most part, but he’s in texas, where he’s got alot more to choose from than any other state, than comes cali or vice versa when it comes to being able to get speed guys and trench guys.

We’re just now as a state beginning to be able to stay at home for trench guys on the o-line in particular, so texas should be ranked high, but to be out of the top 25 as long as mack brown has been there is ridiculous. stoops runs a good strong program and keeps oklahoma in the national title hunt, and i give the okalhoma administration credit for not abandoning ship with stoops, because really, who are you going to get and thats always been oklahoma’s m.o. since at least the 80′s, win alot of games but come up short for the championship and they’re cool with that to a certain degree.

Nwo at UM, are expectations are absurd to a degree, but hell, that’s what makes UM, UM. shannon will have this program where it should be, and that’s playing at a high level of football weeke in and week out like what we saw saturday. Will that get us a championship in the next year or 2, who knows, but we’re on our way to degree. The foundation was laid with that 2008 recruiting class, they’re the ones who helped and are helping to put this team back on the map, will that crew win a national title, they’ll have a chance come next year for sure. We got alot of hungry guys that’ll be back next year and that’ll be shannon’s real senior crew, because that’s the 1st class(the 2008 crew) shannon really had everything to do with, unlike the 2007 class where he was rushed and to a degree.

This program is straight, shannon had to learn on the job and he’s straight now.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    That goes two ways, chief.

  234. I really think this is a silly argument. One factor we as fans tend to forget….it is not easy living in Miami. Not too many coaches wives want to live in Miami.

I think Randy is doing just fine, things do take time. You cannot pick up a good football team and all that goes with it at a McDonald’s drive thru window. FOOTBALL is a much different animal than it was in the supposed good old days.

The biggest problem with the fan base and society as a whole…..is we want it now, no patience, no working hard for a goal…..just me, me, me, now, now, now….. (This is just my opinion).

P.S. The other problem society and fan base has…..short term memory issues.

  235. and fan base has…..short term memory issues.

U got that right. We beat UNC and all of a sudden…

*Shannon told Whipple what offense to run, so we got that covered.

*Our kids got a 15 yard penalty so now they are playing with more emotion and got ye old SWAG back.

*Jacory only threw one pick so now he is a more cautious QB.

Great game. Glad we got the win but I wish some wouldn’t overdose on the Kool Aid. And I have just one request. IF Shannon told Whipple how to run the offense to good effect last Saturday, can anyone get Shannon to tell Flannuzi how to run the special teams?

(I’m sure the offensive line starting to gel and us being able to run the ball consistently had NOTHING to do with it;)

  236. It’s like the 6th Sense… people see what they want to see.

  237. DZ8 I guess short term memory can go both ways but I mean we always tend to forget the bad things that happened in our past. We forget how messes begin and how long it really takes to get us out. Never remember the mistakes made along the way to get to the goal of winning a NC or coming close to it.

Sometimes in life there is not a quick fix…..it may take time and patience.

DZ8, ST is the one area on this team that hasnt improved or shown any sign of improvement as the season has gone on.

ST blocking has been an issue the last several yrs and like this yr, still rears its head.

  240. new blog up!
