Coach Profiles: Al Golden

~ The following article and accompanying interview was contributed by beloved Eye of the Hurricane blogger, PhillyCane ~

In light of recent allegations made by former booster and current snitch, Nevin Shapiro, the University of Miami has fallen on some hard times.  As we all know Mr. Shapiro, via Yahoo! Sports, came out with a tell-all article about a supposed 8 year scandal that alleges Nevin Shapiro provided extra benefits to over 70 former and current Miami Hurricane athletes.  The allegations reported by Shapiro range from paying for abortions, yacht parties, and other “outlandish” activities.  To me, it sounds like another Saturday night out on South Beach, but I digress.  True or not, these are very serious allegations that the NCAA has not taken lightly.  While our “buddies” at ESPN are treating this like the modern-day SMU, it is not time to jump off the ledge just yet.  Rest assured Miami fans, The U will be OK.  As rapper TI says, “Better get on yo job, tell em’, haters get on yo job, it’s motivation.”  I believe this University of Miami football team will rally together because of these events and truly use it as motivation.  With the upcoming football season rapidly approaching, the University of Miami football team has been put into a hole, but luckily we have the one man that will be able to climb us right back out:  Al Golden.

Being from Philadelphia, I was able to see first hand what Coach Al Golden is capable of.  As a first time head coach, he rescued a Temple football program from the verge of becoming obsolete by taking them to their first bowl game in 30 years.  He made a team that didn’t matter relevant again, as Temple is the only D-I football team in Philadelphia.  To get a more in-depth look at our new head coach, I did an interview with Temple University’s Student Media Program Director, John Di Carlo.

John Di Carlo came to Temple University in 2001 after writing for the Daily Journal, a newspaper in Vineland, New Jersey where he won a New Jersey Press Association Award for his coverage of high school sports in southern Jersey.  Di Carlo also currently runs the Temple Owls Rivals site: www.Owlscoop.com.  As a member of the Temple media, Di Carlo had gotten to know Coach Golden quite well before he left for South Florida.  He built a relationship with Golden that extended past the microphones.  Thanks to Di Carlo, I was able to pick his brain and get an in-depth analysis of our new Head Coach that I want to share with the rest of the Hurricane family.

According to Di Carlo, Miami was not the only team that courted Coach Golden for a head coaching position.  In 2008, Gene Block the chancellor at UCLA interviewed Golden twice for the opening.  Being the former Provost at the University of Virginia, he was quite familiar with Golden, and loved him for that matter.  But Golden never coached further west then Penn State, didn’t feel it was the right fit.  Tennessee, Notre Dame, Minnesota, and Vanderbilt also contacted him for his services.  It was widely believed Charlie Weiss was going to bring him on as the defensive coordinator for Notre Dame.  Even the University of Pittsburgh made a late push, but Golden was already too far along with Miami.  Kirby Hocutt had come into town for Temple’s football banquet in December and Golden was hired the following day.  Once Golden left for Miami, Temple replaced him and his staff with coaches from the Floriduh Croc coaching staff including new head coach, Steve Addazio.  Addazio brought in a former croc coaches who were a part of the national championship team.  This would not have been possible with out Al Golden.

In taking a look at Temple before Golden arrived, it is easy to see that they were down right horrible (and that’s being nice).  Temple’s last winning season before Golden was in 1990 under Coach Jerry Berndt where the Owls went 7-4.  The following season, Temple joined the Big East but had much difficulty competing.  Temple failed to win any league games 6 times in their 14 years in the conference and won as many as 3 league games only once.  Berdnt went 11-33, followed by Ron Dickerson who went 8-47, and then the coach prior to Golden, Bobby Wallace went 19-71 and 0-11 in his final year.  According to Di Carlo, former Temple president David Adamany commissioned a task force to examine the feasibility of continuing  the Temple football program.  The football program stayed alive passing by 1 vote and in 2005 after going 0-11, Coach Bobby Wallace was fired and Coach Al Golden was hired.

The job Al Golden did at Temple was nothing short of remarkable.  Di Carlo compares it to what happened at programs such as Kansas St., Hawaii, and Northwestern.  He faced a lot of challenges at Temple before he even coached a game.    When Al took over at Temple, he was hit with a loss of scholarships from the jump.  Indeed, he inherited a roster with offensive linemen that were playing at 250 lbs. with pads on!  Golden had to clean up the program on and off the field.  And he literally had to clean their practice field, which was full of trash and reportedly a syringe or two.  But Golden had been around big time football playing at Penn State and coaching at Boston College and Virginia.  He was around BC during their gambling scandal.  Not his first rodeo.

Di Carlo explained that there is more substance to Al Golden then what meets the eye.  He feels Golden could be a politician in another life.  Golden embraces being the CEO as he able is to manage all aspects that come with the territory from balancing alumni, media, boosters, administration, faculty, but most his importantly, he knows his players best.  Golden is the whole package.  He reads a lot of books on leadership that have allowed him to understand his players.  He uses motivational tactics, which can be seen hanging all over his office or locker room.  Some of these included, “Your actions are speaking so loud I cant even hear what your saying” or “By putting yourself in certain situations all you’re doing is multiplying by 0.  By going to a party or getting involved with someone you shouldn’t, your sum will always be 0.”  Golden’s ultimate goal was to bring back a toughness and attitude to a downtrodden Temple football team while making sure the players were doing the right things in the community and classroom.

As far as dealing with players who do get in trouble such as (Storm “Sticky Icky” Johnson), Golden doesn’t take any crap.  He understands that a part of being the head coach is that you have to monitor player behavior.  At Temple, Golden kicked his two highest ranked recruits off the football team for disciplinary issues.  One, a West Virginia decommit, 4-star Daryl Robinson, and the other a Boston College decommit Eric Reynolds.  One thing Di Carlo stressed was that Golden does believe in second chances (see “Cookie” Buchanan) but do what you are asked to do because he will not make any exceptions for anybody.

Once players arrive on campus they must be groomed so they can blossom into impact football players.  As we all know, Shannon and staff had a small problem with this part of the job.  Luckily, we have a head coach in who had a staff in place that did a nice job at Temple (especially with what he had to work with).  Di Carlo pointed the recent NFL draft, where Temple had players drafted in the first couple rounds even though they weren’t highly recruited out of high school.  Take a look at Muhammad Wilkerson.  Wilkerson out of Lyndon High School in New Jersey had offers from Temple, Kentucky, and Marshall.  In 3 years Golden and staff developed him into a first round draft pick.  Then, if you look at second round draft pick:  Jaiquawn Jarrett out of Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn.  He had no D-I offers until Temple offered.  Then Jarrett came in and played in every single game for 4 years while becoming a starter halfway through his freshman season.  They turned Jarrett into a sure-fire tackler and big hitter.  The Eagles got a good one ;-)

But the question arises: How did Al Golden get these players to come to lowly Temple?  Wel, according to Di Carlo, Golden could sell ice to an Eskimo . . . really.  Golden, who was named National Recruiter of the Year by Tom Lemming, is an aggressive, relentless, engaging, charismatic, and most importantly –  honest – recruiter.  One could just imagine how tough it was for him to sell a program that didn’t win a game the previous year.  But he got it done.  He told his recruits to “have belief without evidence.”  He also told them to trust the process and you will be a part of something special . . . something I believe he is selling to potential Miami recruits.  He is able to relate to different personalities of players and parents.  Di Carlo made it a point to say that the one thing about Golden’s recruiting efforts is that he doesn’t go off the websites such as ESPN or Scout.  Golden and his staff are very good at evaluating talent and they trust their evaluations.  Golden and his staff will not subscribe to the herd mentality.  As can be seen with Wilkerson and Jarrett, they trust their instincts; but they especially trust the process.

So far, everyone has been very pleased with what Coach Golden has done.  He has come in and really changed the culture in Coral Gables.  But as some of the skeptics will say, he still has yet to coach a game.  So what can we expect from Coach Golden on the sidelines?  Di Carlo told me that Golden is very passionate throughout the game, which comes to no surprise as we have heard his practices have been very up-tempo as Golden was seen running around himself.  He will be very animated and energetic on the sidelines, but he will also not let his emotions get the best of him.  You may see him take a couple steps out onto the field getting excited or on 4th inches emphatically motion for the first down.  He does a great job of getting the players fired up.

I also made a point to ask Di Carlo about Coach D’Onofrio.  Coach D was a former linebacker at Penn State whom got drafted to the Green Bay Packers, where his career got cut short due to a knee injury.  Di Carlo told me that Golden must of done a very good job of selling the move to Miami because he was next in line for the Temple head coaching position.  Temple was actually very surprised he didn’t take the head coaching position.  He also said that away from the field Mark is very reserved, especially in his tone of voice.  If you were to interview him in his office, you would maybe to move closer to hear him but once you get him out on the field he is totally different person (as we saw in the all-access videos).  He comes from the Joe Pa culture so he is quite intense on the football field.  Coach D will get the most out of his players, which bodes well for players such as Ray Ray Armstrong, Vaughn Telemaque, and Marcus Forston who all hope to have All-American type seasons.  Scheme-wise at Temple, D’Onofrio two years ago used a 4-3, while last year he used a 3-4.  What this tells me is that he will scheme his defense around his players’ abilities (cough cough- take notes Whipple).

Fortunately for Miami, Coach Golden had to fix the same stuff at Temple that he has had to do here, except now he has more talent.  He changed the attitude at Temple - something that he is in the process of doing in Coral Gables.  Coach Golden will change the culture around here but will not cut corners in doing so.  With this being said, I wanted to get a feel for what Di Carlo expects from the Hurricanes in 2011.  He believes it is not unrealistic at all for us to win 9 or 10 games in year one and make a BCS bowl game.  But the main thing he stressed is that even if we do not win right away, Hurricane nation must trust the process and give Golden a chance to get his players and system in place.  He believes that once that happens the sky is the limit.  According to Di Carlo, it usually it takes a couple of years for kids to buy into the system and learn the different schemes and everything else.  Di Carlo wouldn’t be surprised if we were competing for a national championship in year 2 of the Golden Era.  To say the least, he has a lot of faith in Coach Golden.

Coach Al Golden has been through it all.  A scandal at Boston College.  He brought back a Temple program that was on its deathbed.  He took Temple to their first bowl game in 30 years.  Being from Philadelphia and seeing what he did at Temple, it really was nothing short of a miracle.  I think the possibilities of what he can do at Miami are limitless.  Unfortunately, he is going through Shapirogate, but I know it is something that he can handle.  Coach Golden has the “IT” factor.  He is a future star amongst the coaching ranks and I hope we can keep him in Coral Gables as long as possible.

Go ‘Canes! Beat the Twerps!

PhillyCane

PS:  I would like to thank John Di Carlo for taking the time for the interview.  It is much appreciated!  And I would like to thank JSQ and the Eye of the Hurricane family for bringing it everyday!

Btw on the recruiting front, I’m starting too look at things a lil differnt….i watch some hs games on tv y’day exp the game with the #1 rated de/player in the country Mario Edwards from Tex… I must say I was not impressed….you would think a guy rated that high would jump out at you watchin a live game but he didn’t too me….saw him several times gettin blocked and not gettin off the block buy a guy supposedly not as good as him….it’s the same up here at a skool my hs team played fri night….kid is rated a 3 star playin vs my skool (that doesn’t have a guy goin to a div 1 skool)….now the guy is committed to vandy and is supposed to have a offer from The U….I DIDN’T SEE THE BOY MAKE A PLAY ALLL NITE!!!! u would think a kid goin D1 would jump out vs a team that doesn’t have a d1 player on the roster….now I’m sure the kid has a great highlight tape but the GAME TAPE tells the whole truth!!

    Really nice job, Philly

  4. Nash, on the same token though, did you see Jelani Hamilton against Prattville?

I didn’t see many tweets about it but apparently he had a bum leg.. Slowest guy I’ve ever seen come off the line, piss poor motor, took way too many plays off.

Again, might have been the injury.. He wasn’t hobbling, but he damn sure wasn’t explosive. And he’s expected to be a four/five star guy..

  5. avatar
    Nashvillecane says:

    Bennie I didn’t see sta/pratt….so I’ll take ur word 4 it….

    Nashvillecane says:

^^^ Bennie the comp level would have been bout the same tho….I imagine Hamilton was playin vs other d1 player…Pratt is a top notch program

  7. Doesn’t excuse the lack of motor when he was free and taking plays off though.

All of his stuff was mental and his own issue, not what the opposing team was putting on him lol. Coming off slow, not followin through and finishing can be fixed.

I will say though, that when he was engaged on a tackle, he was pretty much moving him at will. He just wasn’t moving real fast.

  8. @ nashvillecane i saw the sta/prat game jalani played a heck of a game against a good prat offensive line i think he’s a good one just need to be coached up and play evey down

  9. For my hip hop heads. Game going in on the Otis beat for 500 bars….Good God A Mighty!

to the carolina’s i’m to go.

  13. Hamilton didn’t play the 1st QTR, he had a large brace on his leg….maybe caused him not to be mobile?

  14. Philly, hell of a job writing that up brah!

If Shannon and co can go 16-10 with these kids. Then I think Golden and co. can give them a nice run for their money.

  15. I’ve seen Prattville play in Cincy, even though they lost to Cincy ST.X they were really impressive…

The more and more I think about the job he had at Temple, the more I think about the endless possibilities he can accomplish at the U.

I really think if he sticks around, which i dont see why not that he will win a NC here at the U.

  22. Good write-up Philly. I am really looking forward to seeing what Al can do with this team.

Side note, Villanova called….they are upset that you failed to recognize they are D1 and located in Philly. (I know what you meant, but FCS is, in fact, D1)

  28. Bennie what part?

  29. Shawn d, you feel the same bout coachfisch ?

  30. U,

I did about Coach Hill, but for some reason, I’m willing to give Coach Fisch the benefit of the doubt.

  31. Not sure yet, champs

  32. Shawn D, I did about coach Hill as well. I feel like i could’ve gotten more out of that talent than him. Friggin reptile!!

Fisch is trying to make a name for himself. I don’t think he blows this. It really doesn’t take much to set up a scheme to get this type of talent to shine. Hell, with Goldie so particular and demanding, I don’t see him letting fisch ruin this for himself.

  33. Bennie, if you’re doing an overnite let me know! we may be able to grab a drink if you’re not scurred!!1

  34. U,

I’m with u man. As long as Fisch does better here than he did in Minnesota, we’ll be good to go.

  39. If you get a chance to re-watch the ESPN Oklahoma behind the scenes all-access .. I promise, it’s badass …… listen to Canez1 on this, I wouldn’t steer you guys wrong

When you see the Oklahoma Drill part, it’ll get you hyped up … also it’s funny to hear the secondary talk sh*t to everyone else, calling themselves “sharks” and everyone else bait

DVD is starting b/c he’s on the Raid-ahs – that’s why. One of the most retarded organizations recently, just like the Dolphins are

That first pass against him, he couldn’t do anything about (I can’t believe I just said that) – b/c Brees is just that f*cking good – but he still didn’t turn at all to see the ball thrown behind him and into the belly of the WR

Other than that, it’s the same old thing like in the USF game and others – the QB has a booger in his nose and he’s picking it. DVD is that booger

  40. DVD is gonna learn to play the ball or learn a non football related trade.

  48. Good Golden Interview on WQAM.

He say Jacory was leading but that Stephen has really come on as of late. This after he said that Morris was getting a lot more reps due to Jacory’s ineligible status right now. So we’ll have to see what happens now, but I feel confident in saying had Nevingate not affected current players, Jacory would’ve been THE GUY. Don’t know now though with the status that he and the other 7 guys currently have. Golden said they expect some word from the NCAA in 48 hours but that he can’t promise that.

  54. Philly, I know I told you privately, but now I’m going to brag on you in public.

You are welcome to practice your writing with EOTH any time.

  55. I wasn’t around yesterday because I had the laborious task of getting Six ready for tailgating season.

Dude got new shoes, brakes, and already got a new battery on Friday.

Plus the new ‘Canes thing on the towing thing that doubles as a bottle opener for tailgates and a UM new license plate frame.

Dr. Dent is coming next Saturday before I head up to MD to fix a scratch he got on his face from a fight with the parking garage in my office.

It wasn’t a crusade bro. I just love my team. I LIKE Jacory a lot, but I like winning better. I thought after ND he was finished. I was sad for him, but the resilience he showed was what great leaders have. He didn’t Taylor Cook or Cannon Smith, he said I’m not afraid of competition and I’m at my best when I compete. The fans were AGAINST him, the odds were AGAINST him, and perhaps even deep inside the coaches may have been AGAINST him and he fought. He has that inner IT that not everyone has that when it gets tough he can still see beyond it. No matter what happens from here on out, I’m just proud of the way he fought, like a TRUE CANE and he’ll always have my admiration and respect for that. I hope things with the NCAA works out for him because its a shame that something like that has to derail him after he’s fought so valiantly to restore himself to himself, his team, his coaches, and to the fan base that aren’t so blinded by their hate of him.

  58. Rivals dogged us out at both QB positions but based on last year, how can you blame them…I hope the guys DO see it and use it as motivation.

BG and Este we need a spot to meet up Monday at @ 1pm so we can all roll to the lots together.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!!

  95. Smh.

We already said we were meeting at my hotel and doing a caravan over there.

There will also be a blog on it this weekend just for those of us who are a bit forgetful.

  96. Canez1, i still have my gameday schedule in flux at the moment. need to find where my daughter will be and how early she can be there.

  97. CK.

I always love bad guys! I’m a villian at heart! Ha! Love Darth Vader and the nWo was INCREDIBLE!

  98. jsq, meeting at your hotel might be tough since it right next to the stadium pretty much. 1 pm should beat the heavy traffic, but with it being a labor day game you never know.

  99. Never mind.

Sounds like the meet up is at the Marriott and we will roll from there.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  100. Ya I think the traffic should be chilled because of the holiday and time of day we are meeting up.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  101. if any of y’all can say you were rooting for the Iron Sheik to beat Hulk Hogan back in the day then you can be on my level.

  102. Esteban.

I’m thinking of going to the Tailgate and then leaving to part at CP Metro like we did before and shuttle over so I don’t have to deal with the traffic leaving. What are you thinking?

  103. i’m going to need a full schedule for this weekend i see. and i’m realizing doing the green screen footage with hair is harder than doing it bald. i might have to cut my hair for the season.

  104. We are meeting one hour before gates open and 7 hours before kickoff.

    It will be okay.

    I’ve done this before.

You know, a couple of times.

  105. What is still TBA is where we are meeting at 9pm on Sunday night for cocktails and ‘Canes talk. :-)

    Bg? Esteban?

  106. JSQ.

I’m rolling wherever. Bonecrushers got shot down for various reason! Ha!

  107. bg, i don’t know. i might just shuttle in from the shuttle stop near my apartment for the meet up and all. no driving for me.

  108. Hard Times was the Monday Lunch spot right?

9 PM is on the late side for me on Sunday night. I won’t have baby sitter access two nights in a row most likely. i might make a brief appearance with my daughter but can’t be around too long.

  109. Esteban.

I hear you. I got folks with me though and I live in Bowie I have to drive. I think I will do what we did last time and shuttle in from CP Metro. But I’ll drive during the day.

  114. Let’s at least pick a meet-up spot for Sunday night. You guys know the area. Just name something where I won’t get molested and where Esteban can safely bring his daughter and we’ll roll there. We don’t necessarily have to stay whereever we go first.

  116. I feel you, Esteban.

I was given something like 2 hours notice last week and wasn’t able to participate. :-(

  117. Why don’t we meet up at Fridays like BG mentioned before and then go from there.

Family friendly, so kids should be welcome and molesters kept at bay.

    One more thing.

I will never give props to kids that suk dyk and “take years off” at the U and ball in the NFL.

    ******

You don’t have to think twice about DVD then. He sucked at the “U” and will suck in the NFL … except being the fastest on the team to go retrieve water bottles for everyone

And hell no I won’t give a kid who is a 2.5 year starter and that is turning into a Senior props for “sticking it out” and staying put. That’s what you’re supposed to do anyway, esp. if you have a kid that is going to be a true Soph behind you in the depth chart

Jacory would’ve been the biggest pooosay in the world if he would’ve transferred …… he would’ve been along the lines almost of Gray Crow or his brother LD

B/c you don’t get up and run away doesn’t just make you a Cane – it’s what a real guy is supposed to do anyway

If it was a completely new system coming in that you knew you couldn’t run b/c you’re not built for it and then you transfer – that’s somewhat understandable. For example, a 6’4 220+ pocket passing QB that is put into a option offense .. uh, no, I’m out. You think Manning or Marino or Fouts in college would stay in an offense like that if it was placed upon them?

  126. Six.

In your eyes J12 was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t so your opinion is biased.

  127. Also same thing with Crow. He’s been one of the most STAND UP guys and is helping along with Duke to REALLY hold his class together but again in your eyes he’s damned if does and damned if he doesn’t. I just hope they all prove your guys wrong because I’d swear sometimes you guys come off as Canes fans ONLY when stuff looks good. What happened to ride or die? Again (as Coach Golden would say), I’m not against your constructive criticisms but you guys REALLY go overboard where it becomes blatant PLAYER hate and not criticism anymore.

  128. 9pm, Sunday, at Fridays. We’ll be coming from Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda – is the hotel on the way or should we just meet at Fridays?

  129. Este – when I was a little kid and I saw Jake the Snake Roberts lay the DDT down on Ricky the Dragon Steamboat and also Hulk Hogan – I honestly thought they were dead

I was stunned. I ran to my mom and started yelling about how Jake killed both Ricky and Hulk. She thought I was nuts. I’m all pulling on her shirt, telling her to come see, that this was the most important thing for her to do right then right there

I’d get crazy pissed at times. When I saw Rowdy Roddy Piper in Piper’s Pit, take some coconuts and start beating the hell out of Superfly Snuka … I lost it. I took a magic marker and wrote “Rowdy Roddy” on a tshirt, went outside and put it over a tree, then got my wooden bat and started whaling on the tree. I’d yell at my sister for wearing anything that had plaid on it b/c I’d say she was a Rowdy Roddy fan

It was easy to be a fan of the baby faces when you were a kid. Then as I got older, I started loving the heels b/c they were awesome. Case in point – when the Rock first turned heel and everyone was booing him. I loved it. He went from Flex Kavana to the Rock and it was glorious

it makes my break it down key individual match up even more key.

  135. Esteban, let’s just pray Forston will be elligible.

  136. Loved The Outsiders faction of the NWO.

I still get love to this day for my ability to do a good Scott Hall impression.

    Yo Six….Remember the boy Crush??

I actually remember back when he was with Demolition.

  137. bg1906 – I was one of the biggest Jacory supporters out there when he took the starting job as a Soph. I was one of the few on Canespace that defended him when he threw picks, saying as long as he keeps throwing TDs then I’m good … even referencing Joe Namath’s WRs who said “when Joe throws the ball up, I know I’m either going to catch it for a TD or I’m going to be tackling the DB”

Come on my brother, don’t go there with me. Esp. when it comes to having a “biased” opinion. Jacory can do no wrong in your eyes at all – that’s pretty bias if anything

Then I started seeing just how much he was hurting the team, not only on the field but when he’d go sulk by himself on either side of the bench. I don’t want to get into the whole Whipple’s system back-and-forth on here again … b/c one again, no one wanted Whipple back. But when you see what happened last year with where the ball is going, when he started losing teammates, when he had a Hall of Fame RB in Edge and Super Bowl winning DB in Starks just shaking their heads at him and his performances and then breaking down what exactly is wrong with him and how he still hasn’t fixed it …… come on, it helped shed a hell of a lot of light on it

And about Gray – I actually see him up close and personal at his games, from the sidelines, standing right next to him. I’ve seen this kid since he was a Frosh at Countryside .. except when he transferred b/c he wasn’t going to get the starting job, so he went up to Ocala to play for a year, then transferred back to Countryside last year. I see what he is on the field. I laugh when I see writers down for the Sun Sentinel or Herald or Palm Beach whatever paper try and talk about him and his team. Why? B/c I’ve never seen a single one of them at any of his games … so how would they know jack sh*t about the kid and what he looks like on the field. From a YouTube highlight clip?

Ok, I have a YouTube highlight clip as well from one of the many games I shot of him. Here it is

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jJziVl8WYw

7 TDs and 8 INTs last year. I believe I remember Manny pointing out that Countryside ran the ball a lot. They did. Why? They had a huge OLine and a good RB. They also had a huge OLine that could protect Gray so he could throw to his WRs and TE

They’re running a 4 wide spread offense this year. I was at their game this last week against Lakewood High and Dante Fowler, the very highly rated DE that is going to FSU. Gray threw 1 fade TD to the endzone that Lakewood wasn’t even set on defense yet in when the whistle blew

I don’t question the heart of the kid or the rah-rah of him. He’s definitely the leader of the team in yelling encouragement and all that jazz. I question what he does on the field if he’s going to be a QB for the Canes. From what I’ve seen in 1.5 years of him not only during high school football season but also 7-on-7s, it’s not that encouraging at all

I’ll be interested to see just how hard UiF pushes for him b/c Weiss is now the OC there … and when he was at Notre Dame, he supposedly was really interested in Gray when he was a Frosh

  140. no more shalala vids. eyes can only take so much.

  141. I ride or die with the Canes like you wouldn’t believe

No one is above the “U” though. No one. You don’t think the players themselves from the true bad ass Canes teams weren’t pretty harsh in their criticism of each other when they let each other down?

I had a story told to me by a player on the ’87 team that said after the loss, all the players were in the locker room together and a certain leader on the team got up on a chair in the middle of everyone and yelled some things before the press was allowed in that would shock you. It was primarily about how there was a very large number of guys that gave it their all for that game, busted their ass in that game – except for one. This leader (who you is even talked about by one of the coaches in the U Documentary during that game) singled out that one guy, not really by name, but by his stats

Would you say that guy is too harsh in his criticism to where it is construed as hate? Or would you say that there is a certain standard set by everyone that wears that “U” and has busted their asses during the off-season and in-season and expects everyone else to do the same?

I believe it was Brett Romberg talking in an interview about how that 2000-2001 team would get vicious with one another if they didn’t finish their reps of 110s or anything else in the weight room or off-season. If you couldn’t hang, then you basically didn’t get accepted into their brotherhood and were almost looked down upon as being weak

    This isn’t intramurals

You’ve never seen me say J12 could do no wrong. I just know that SOME of his issues last year were not his own. All I’m saying bro is that (and your comments corroborate) are that you are with them when its going well then you turn on them if things go bad. If I hadn’t known you as long as I have and just looked STRICTLY at your comments I’d think this guys is always so ANTI. Just a statement of fact bro, nothing personal and you know that. I respect you to the utmost here, BUT I’m just saying my good man. As far as Crow, his play OBVIOUSLY has a lot to do with your opinion and I 100% respect that BUT as a PERSON so far he’s been one of the most VOCAL and most committed in terms of standing with the team no matter the allegations and also keepin the class together.

In HS I actually played both ways and got accolades both ways. But in college I preferred OL because I just thought I was better there. But NO sir I have NONE! HA! PLUS I was NEVER on these guys level. Just a D-II guy man!

  149. Also remember I only played in college for a little bit too. After I got hurt I never was the same mentally. That is always the biggest challenge after major injury. So I called it a wrap and transferred closer to home. I always thought about playing again, but the mentals I couldn’t get together.

  150. Scarier thought, no DTs (if Fortson is out) or our secondary without them safety’s….hope we drop 40 on them

  151. Interesting commentary in J12′s behind the facemask…

At the U, I’ve learned so much from my past experiences. From an outside of football point of view, I’ve learned who’s really by my side through thick and thin. I’ve learned family is first. I’ve realized that the grass is not always greener on the other side, and you have to go through some things to realize where you want to be. Growing up, probably since seventh grade, I never lost a game as a starter. Coming to college and losing in my first game as a starter, it makes you look at things in a different light. You think maybe I needed to go through this. The season I had last year went from being me nominated at the beginning of the season as a Heisman candidate to having a bad season and getting knocked around by injuries. Ending the way it did in the Sun Bowl, I think it humbled me. It made me realize a lot of things, and there are a lot of people who were with me before who are no longer here anymore. It helped me a lot. It helped me be positive, helped me realize that keeping a smile on your face will get you through everything.

  152. More…

The best advice is something I say every day to my teammates, which is to stay positive and always look in the mirror at what you could have done better. If you stay positive and you do that, you’ll never have a reason to blame anyone else. I spent most of last season trying to find ways not to put it on myself, but I pretty much now see it that if something bad happens, I could have done something better to help myself. I could have watched more film, I could have done this, I could have done that. You have to keep on fighting and keep on taking the positive things that you improve on, and then you’ll be at one with yourself. It’s easy to blame the coaches, but you’re the one who’s in your situation, so you have to help yourself get out of it. When you think positive, only positive things come out of it.

  153. Coach Fisch is an interesting guy. He’s pretty young. He just turned 35. He keeps everything interesting when it comes to football. It makes you want to learn more every day. You go into practice actually happy to be there and willing and ready to work and give your all for him. He brings it out of me. He’s the type of guy that everybody can really rally around and play for. He stays positive about everything, and there’s a lot of negativity he doesn’t focus on. No matter what, it’s a fun quarterback room and it’s all smiles in there.

^^^I wonder what he’d say about Whip???

  154. Maybe I’m missing something but isn’t a good chunk of that 2009 gaytor team in the NFL now? Well, at least the guys people would want to see…

  155. Miami is a city that loves and hates you at the same time. It’s kind of weird and it’s kind of crazy, but last year I didn’t see it that way. I put it as a city that hates you. The people here want to see their team do well, and they want to see you do well also. They’re mad for you, they’re not mad at you. It’s a cool city, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

  156. It’s a cool city, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

    - – -

    You hear that Rashad?

J12 is going to be drafted by the fins so they can redeem themselves from this croc-loving fiasco.

  157. Philly, The U passed along your article.

It’s getting a lot of hits!

    Good job!!! :-D!!!

  158. bg1906 – if Crow were to come in and they switched to another position, say as an H-Back type, I’d have no problem with that … but so far, the kid just hasn’t shown a lot as a QB

Put some weight on the kid, he’s obviously not afraid of contact

Dan Kendra moved to the fullback or even H-Back position after his Mr. Science experiment literally blew up in his face from his kitchen sink .. then when he injured his knee as well, his QB career was done

I don’t think name calling is really a true sign of hate. Jar-Jar Harris? Jacory Binks? That’s not exactly that bad. You should hear some of the stuff we call each other up at work or when we’re in the thick of it during crunch time before going on air or during a game

When my boy calls me on my cell phone, I have his personal ringer set to the scene from Hangover when he yells “Paging Dr. Phaggot … Dr. Phaggot”, so I know it’s him when he’s calling

A lot of fan base expects a hell of lot more – esp. from the most prolific position there is on the football team, and that’s the QB spot. If you’re the QB, you know going in that you’re either going to get the harshest criticism or you’re going to be praised like none other and have to file restraining orders from all the kitty that will be trying to hop on your crank. You better have some thick skin and let sh*t slide off your shoulder pretty easy

It’s just part of the business

    Futch is falling

Futch says he wasn’t surprised coaches moved him – he says Gaines proved himself as a big-time playmaker, so his best shot to see the field was elsewhere.

“There isn’t much you can do to get in front of Jimmy,” Futch said. “Jimmy is the real deal. You’re talking about pure athlete.”
    //////////////////////////////

futch can take credit in helping gaines excel but that’s a true white flag statement right their. More importantly, go head and chalk up another 2 star recruit brought in by shannon that guys were criticizing randy for, go head an put andrew smith in that same category, 2 of the hardest working players on the team.

    /////////////////////////////

As soon as someone let’s dvd know, it’s not about winning the foot race, it’s about who catches the ball, he might just turn out to be pretty decent. He’s the one player though i feel they should’ve switched to receiver. His problem is, he doesn’t have good body control, so while he’s fast, when the balls in the air, he can’t stop and slw down to bat it away, 1st off, fitzgerald is not gone ever out run dvd, in fat not to many wide-outs ever will, but all the wide-outs know they can always either out muscle em or just slow down and catch the ball without resistance because dvd loves to try and bat a ball down with one hand instead of snatching it out the air.

That’s what made deion, prime time, he use to always make me laugh because every time he would pick a pass off, he’ shove the receiver to the ground, lol, but if you just watched his body control to get the ball when it arrived and than the body control he had after he picked the pass off, he was at another level, but dvd, he can run with anybody in any era, but this is not just a foot race, play the damyum ball, he’d be better off back pedaling 3o & 40 yards down field so he can come up better, he may actually even make a better safety!

Good post bg on that ray lewis talk, more pieces of the puzzle to the missign links that shannon knew of and talked about but shannon was trying to install it another way. shannon knew what Miami is suppose to look like, and you heard him say “who taught kyle wright how to be a Hurricane” etc. etc. shannon was on the right path, just didn’t get a chance to use the simple methods that goldie is doing, at temple, goldie definitely had to re-invent the wheel, at UM, all he gotta do is put rims on it!

Now that showcase game will be salted with discussion of the Hurricanes’ problems, and possibly with multiple Hurricanes suspensions. Then they play Ohio State. Miami could easily lose all its road games (Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Florida State, South Florida) this season.

I personally don’t know why fines aren’t used more often in college. Colleges are struggling financially much more than professional organizations.

Fines hurt the school without hurting the players and everyone else. In a situation like this a fine would make more sense, since the real problem was Kirby and Heavy Dee and to a lesser degree The Don. Hell, suspend Kirby for four years like they did that TN bball coach.

That’s what would happen in the NFL.

They could’ve and should’ve cut him off easily. And considering Shannon hated the guy and told his players he was off-limits, the AD and Pres were clearly the problem.

Good point but using last year as a barometer, VT away, FSU away, OSU, MD away, UNC away before Butch’s ouster, Clemson, and probably two other games I’m forgetting, doesn’t bode well for a team that lost to USF and ND in it’s last two games and got a whole new coaching staff.

There were far more questions than answers of the national perception of the U without this schedule. With the schedule and the possible suspensions, it looks even worse.

  218. cav, like i always say, what tuff schedule, hell they have to play us! And if we’re at full strength, i can’t see nobody beating us. Those games we gave away last year, had everythign to do with us playing like doo doo and the other teams playing as hard as they could and still barely beating us. The only reason fsu beat us like they did was because they were more organized, had better play-callings offensively and were in better shape.

This year, you can elimante 2(better shape and organized) of those reason for sure off the list. We’ll definitely have better play calling, i’m not concerned about how many points we put up, i just want to see offensive play calling that doesn’t leave the defense hanging all game lone, you can’t do that against a jimbo fischer offense, he understands what plays to call to try and wear down your defense, at the same time, he always tries to test the stamina of a defense. I luv hearing j12 talking about how we could beat any cross country team now. This team will definitely be in better shape and at full strength, no way we don’t go undefeated, ej manuel will be hurting along with those wide-outs, and if streeter comes to ball and becomes that every down receiving threat, joyner & reid and are going to have real problems and better go try and see if they can stick travis benjamin.

Add in the fact that none of them can cover glue hands, and than you throw in allen hurns and phillip dorsett, lol, good luck db’s across America. No team on our schedule scares me, v-tech, ok, none of those teams were that much better than us, against v-tech we gave that game away for sure, them and osu, none of the teams we lost to impressed me, they weren’t world beaters, from here on in, if you trying to get a victory against us at full strength, you can hang it up!

    You hear that Rashad?

J12 is going to be drafted by the fins so they can redeem themselves from this croc-loving fiasco.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Lol!! This happens and I’ll break down and cry..lol

  223. jason whitlock, this guy always seems like he’s trying to find the angle no one else has attacked but he’s always saying something suspect, he stays in left field to much for me. 1st before this interview he throws luke name in their with shapiro talking about “they’ve always had guys hanging around the program like that, luke” if you’re to say guys, let’s not let only luke and nevin shapiro come out. Than in this interview, he says, i got friends in Miami/people i talk to, “sapp i use to know luke” i mean how in the hell you use to know somebody, luke is still luke.

  224. Cam Newton was cleared. HOW could ANY of our kids NOT be cleared??? Just thinking out loud?

  225. Not sure if I trust the NFL projections of a dude named Clowney who thinks nonsense is a two word hyphenate.

  226. Whitlock tries to hard at times.

and Rashad, I’d love to see the Fish take Jacory. Would be entertaining to say the least.

  227. bg, Cam Newton played in the SEC.
