Miami vs. Virginia Preview

~ The following article was contributed by esteemed Eye of the Hurricane blogger, Delray ~

The Miami Hurricanes (4-3, 2-2 ACC) will look to extend their ACC win streak to three in a row against the Cavaliers of Virginia (4-3, 1-2 ACC) on Thursday night at 8:00pm on ESPN.   The Hurricanes look to continue playing almost error-free football and hopefully distance themselves from some of the teams in their conference.  The Cavaliers look to stop the roller coaster they have been on.  After beating a heavily favored Georgia Tech team two weeks ago, they got embarrassed by a less-than-intimidating North Carolina State team this past weekend.  The last couple of games the Hurricanes have done a complete turnaround by playing well offensively in the first half and letting the defense hold on for the victory.  I’d like to see them play a full game from start to finish and spread the scoring out.  Every game the Hurricanes have gotten a little better, stronger, showing a little more confidence (particularly on defense)  and adding a little bit of a swagger to their steps.

Let’s see what the Cavaliers have cooking statistically…

QBMichael Rocco (6-3, 210, So.), who is sharing duties with David Watford (6-1, 190, Fr.), has been given the nod to start against Miami.  Rocco has completed109 of 182 (59.9%) for 1,182 yards for 4 TDs to 8 INTs, for an efficiency rating of 113.09.  He averages 170 yards per game. Meanwhile, Watford has completed 30-of-71 passes for 346 yards with 3 touchdowns to 4 interceptions, for an efficiency rating of 85.9.  On the ground, he has 15 rushes for 44 yards.

RB – The Cavaliers’ rushing game showcases a dual-threat attack lead by Perry Jones (5-8, 185, Jr.) who has 113 attempts for 603 yards with two scores and Kevin Parks (5-8, 195, Fr.) with 74 carries for 404 yards and a three TDs.  Jones also has 27 catches out of the backfield for 276 yards. The Cavaliers are more of a straight up attack than the triple option employed by GT

WR – Kris Burd (6-1, 200, Sr.) leads the team with 34 receptions for 447 yards.  Tim Smith (6-0, 185, So.) has also contributed with 18 receptions for 276 yards with a couple touchdowns.  At TE – Colter Phillips (6-6, 245, Jr.) is primarily used as a blocking TE as he does not appear on the stats sheet.

OL – The offensive line is anchored by center Anthony Mihota (6-4 285 Sr.). At the guard spots are Luke Bowanko (6-6, 295, So) and Austin Pasztor  (6-7, 305, Sr.) Outside at the tackle slots are  Oday Aboushi (6-6, 310, Jr.) Morgan Moses (6-6, 335, So.).  These are some good-sized boys compared to GT.

On defense, Virginia uses a 4-3 scheme.

DL – At the tackles are Matt Conrath (6-7, 280, Sr.) who has 42 tackles, seven for loss and two sack while Nick Jenkins (6-3, 275, Sr.) has  21 tackles, three and a half for loss and half a sack..

Defensive ends: Jake Snyder (6-4, 275, So.) has 18 tackles and one for loss.  Cam Johnson (6-4, 270, Sr.) has totaled 17 tackles, five and a half for a loss and two sacks.

LB – At the LB spots Steve Greer (6-2, 225, Jr.) takes up the middle spot and has 65 total stops and two and a half for a loss.  The weak side in occupied by LaRoy Reynolds (6-2, 230, Jr.) who has 49 total tackles and 4 for a loss.  The strong side is held down by Aaron Taliaferro (6-2, 230, Sr.) comes in with 12 total tackles with 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

CB/S – Corner Chase Minnifield (6-0, 185, Sr.) the captain of the group has 32 stops and four and a half tackles for loss and 2 picks. Demetrious Nicholson (5-11, 165, Fr.) has 32 tackles, 1 for a loss and also has 2 picks.  Safety spots are occupied  Rodney McLeod (5-11, 180, Sr.) on the strong side and Corey Mosley (5-10, 200, Sr.) on the free side.  Combined they have 51 tackles with 1 pick each

K/PRobert Randolph is 11-of-16 on FG attempts and a perfect 17-of-17 on PATs. Punter Jimmy Howell has 31 punts, averaging 39.9 yards per punt.

Kick/Punt Returns – Darius Jennings (5-11 165 Fr.) has 19 kick return chances with a 21.4 yard average with a long of 32 yards.   Dominique Terrell has 10 punt returns for 54 yards, averaging 5.4 per return, with a long of 13 yards.

Key Match-ups

The Hurricanes should come into the game pissed off after being embarrassed by a lesser Virginia last year.  The game that some may say was the icing on the cake that sealed Randy Shannon’s fate.  Miami has had an up and down season so far but seems to have leveled out over the past 10 quarters. Thankfully, it has been for the better.  Virginia, on the other hand, continues to struggle with their identity.  With an early season schedule that was very “Gatoresgue” they have had difficulties when facing a conference opponent.  Their lone win came after a bye week.

Look for Miami to come out throwing; most likely staying away from Minnifield’s side of the field and going after the true-freshman Nicholson.  After the passing game has been established, it will be Miller time.  Personally, I’d like to see a bit more of Clements as well.  I felt the short pass he turned into a first down against GT last week was one of the key plays of the game.  Once Miami gets ahead, don’t expect them to take their foot off the gas.  The last game in the Orange Bowl combined last year’s debacle in Charlottesville is still too fresh in many people’s minds. On defense, look for Miami to throw some wrinkles at the young quarterbacks including various stunts and zone blitzes in order to force some turnovers.

I’ll see you Thursday night!

    (2) It took all the will-power I have not to add the following after “Gatoresque”

[EDITOR'S NOTE: What, you mean the players made out with each other every time they got a first down?]

Gators got good turnout of 2008 players this weekend. Canes may not have as a good turnout for ’01 celebration. Many have games Sunday.

London has these kids on point and the UVA -Golden connection will just add to the hype.

    Should be a close one.

Coke Zero made a special edition bottle down here for the game. It says “embrace the rivalry” below the logos.

Actually pretty cool, especially if you have a sharpie handy to X out that criminole crap.

  15. Since I live in Virginia, I am sick and tired of listening to the Cavalier fans trash our ‘Canes. I hope the guys go out there Thursday night and show them no mercy for four quarters. Miami is a much better team than UVA, and our players should win this game handily if they give it their best effort. I’m just sorry I can’t fly down to Florida to see Sean Spence and company decimate their quarterback like they did to Jacory last year.

  27. CanesCanesCanes says:

Defense slipping against a more balanced attack is a reasonable assumption and one I was mulling. I’m just going on gut instinct, and just a feeling that the O runs up some quick early scores, allowing the D to pin their ears back. Hope so, anyway.

Not really hard to believe when guys are being told where to go with the ball. Like i said, he had his short route sets.

    ******

This is exactly what I was waiting to hear

And ya my man, the Colts vs. Saints slaughter … although it was painful to see Reggie Wayne sitting on the Colts bench while their defense was on the field, having Curtis Painter come over to him – you knew Reggie was just thinking about kicking him in the face …… while that was painful, it was great to see Jimmy Graham out there killing it, along with Vilma getting that fumble recovery

Jimmy Graham on Jim Rome radio show yesterday – real good interview

  30. It’s by Renaissance Commons. We are going there tonight. They have a gluten free menu apparently.

    Mmmmmmm steak!

  31. My source for starting QB in the above article proved to be incorrect. Virginia will contine to start Michael Rocco with Walford filling in on certain plays.

    Michael Rocco’s stats
    7 games
    113.09 rating
    109 of 182 (59.9%) for 1,182 yards
    8 interception
    4 touchdowns

    170 ypg Avg.

  32. Six, not going to argue with you about Painter but how much blame should the coaching staff take for not having a suitable backup? I realize the strike may have hindered their ability to go after someone – anyone. But this guy probably should have been 3rd or 4th string.

  33. Article updated, Delray, thanks!

  34. UVA has a DT that is 6’7?

UVA has another DT that is in the NFL, Chris Canty, who is 6’7

John Henderson is a freak at 6’7 330+ … Haynesworth, Seymour and Alan Branch are 6’6 … the rest of NFL DTs aren’t taller than 6’5, most of them in the 6’2 range

Broncos have around 4 DTs who are 6’5 I believe

Why does UVA have DTs that are NBA size

  35. Delray – no doubt. Always wondered when the Colts would ever have a capable backup to Manning … ever

You go down the list of backup QBs they’ve had there while he’s been there

Steve Walsh, Mark Rypien, Brock Huard, Shaun King, Jim Sorgi … eeesh

    Completely the Colts fault

  36. C1.

I think they are being politically correct for now but this one is for Jacory. UVA kicked our rears in last year. Its Thursday, its UVA, they’ll be inspired and do the damn thang!

  37. I’m thinking 38-20, Golden’ Goons. Offense is in debt right now. Time to pony up.

Its the Duke game I’m actually leery about. Those guys have played Billy Conn to our Joe Louis WAAAAAAAAAAAY too many times, these-a-day.

(Look it up, all you out of nowhere UFC fans….)

Its about damn time we humped them like 41-13 or sumthin.

But yea, we got the Cavs. UNLEASH THE GOON SQUAD!!!

    HEEEEEEY YOOOOOOOOU GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. I think we make another statement on Thursday night and play lights out

    Va will be crushed

    Welcome to Miami bytches

    That is All

  39. I’m just happy the Duke game isn’t at noon, which is good for all of us that will be at homecoming festivities the night before! I can’t remember ever playing them at home any other time!

. . . and there is no reason to be scared of Duke since we aren’t playing up there. We know that is tough.

  40. pb(EOTHROH11) says:

I don’t see a blowout here. UVA plays hard for 60 minutes and are well coached.

Let’s not get crazy folks. A win in conference is good enough and although we are playing well, the triple option we saw last wek really plays to our strength and we are less than 12 months removed from a loss against this same team.

I’ll go home happy with a 10 point win.

  41. PB.

Has nothing to do with being CRAZY. Just that they will be motivated. UVA is very well coached and they have a few good players. BUT we are WAY better them in terms of talent (injuries and all) and we are MUCH better coached now. This one will not be close. We all thought GTech would be close and UNC would be close and had the O not fell asleep in the 2nd half it wouldn’t have been close. The team is coming together and is beginning to get cnsistent. I’d be SHOCKED if this team isn’t 6-3 heading into the final stretch of FSU, USF, and BC.

  42. ^^^PB. That said, I’m not going to say blow out, but I do think we win and win comfortably (at least 2 scores).

  43. 2 scores meaning 2 TDs or 14 pts but I don’t think it’ll be CLOSE. Like the UNC game seemed closer than it really was. We kicked their ass, just was too conservative on offense in the 2nd half. I think the team and coaches learned the JJ lesson. Keep playing!

  44. Sailor.

Uggggggggggggh! Geographically that is HORRIBLE but it officially should spell the end of the Big East. UConn and probably Rutgers will make their way to the ACC now I’d assume or maybe UConn and USF but I can’t seem us or FSU wanting another Florida School in the conference. So I’d say UConn and Rutgers because I can’t see Louisville or Cincy fitting in. ND would be a big get but I think they are hell bent on retaining their independence.

  45. Sorry Thomas Jefferson, but we gonna crush your university

  46. Miami better get on the ball!

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7147795/minnesota-golden-gophers-coach-jerry-kill-signs-seven-year-contract

Kill is losing and has had several seizures as well and they are showing a vote of confidence. I think we REALLY need to do the same and lock Golden in NOW before the sanctions and before PSU comes calling!

  47. USF nor Louisville will never make the grade academically

Rutgers, UConn, ND or PSU will be in consideration for the remaining two spots

UConn is on the outside looking in and jumping up and down like donkey from schreck, pick me, pick me. Their problem is the lawsuit the filed on Miami, BC and VaTech when we left BE, so there is a huge bridge that needs to be rebuilt for them to get in

I would like to see ND and PSU, but would be ok with ND and Rutgers

TV contract when it is all done and said will be huge in the $30,000,000 range per team

  48. BG

Wouldnt surprise me if AG gets some consideration after this season if we play out well for the remainder of games

Get close to or in ACC Championship will def help his bank account!

  58. BG

    Agreed on AG

ND will be put into a position of join a conference or be left out when the super-conferences come into play. As far as their deal with god and NBC, let the highest bidder prevail!

PSU is on record as saying they would prefer eastern rivals versus what they have, they are an east coast school

As it stands now the ACC with the addition of Pitt and Syracuse OWN the eastern seaboard!

  59. BG

I am sure that ND has an out clause on the TV deal if for some reason they are forced into conference realignment.

They would be fools otherwise to sign something that says you “Must” remain independent.

I personally know ND’s AD cause I worked a project with him awhile back and he is a smart businessman. I doubt he would entertain sharing a TV contract if he has his own tv contract. ^^^Still trying! LOL

  64. I like how it’s being said that this team is playing hard for 4 quarters now which it’s actually just the offense doing that now. Had this offense been merged with the defense we had last year, they might of went undefeated last year but having fluzzi still in charge of special teams would’ve cost us somewhere.

THe reason it seemed as if this team quit last year was because the offense was doo doo, but the only game that was not winnable last year early in the 4th quarter was the fsu game, but had this same offense/jedd been here, the fsu game would’ve went a whole lot different. In fact, our running game would be better simply because richard gordon was here and jedd would’ve used miller more along with damien berry, had that combination been used correctly last year, this offense would’ve been more explosive, than you throw in hankerson along with glue hands and travis, teams would’ve hated to have played us last year.

laron byrd, hopefully he makes it in the nfl, but for some reason j12 can’t connect with him on a regular, he tries but laron just isn’t where he’s supposed to be when you need em. j12 has started to connect with stretch like he did at the west, but he didn’t play with hank in highschool, and him and hank were balling, he didn’t play with travis or hurns in highschool and they’ve ballin, and now phillip dorsett is becoming a go to guy on 3rd downs, and yall already know about the glue hands connection. Sso if #62 is connecting decent on 6 out of 7 receivers, that 7th receiver who committed i think he was 7, is taking up his committment place. He luvs competition.

It’s got to be bad to be a senior and not just lose your spot, but start getting smashed down the depth chart, i mean, byrd is battling with rashawn scott now, cause travis & dorsett on one side and streeter & hurns on the other. jedd and crew are begging uva to let chase minnifield play man this year, lol.

At the 3:43sec mark, when you got a real oc, that was a beautiful play, fake the hand off to mike james, he continues to the right flat, which pulls the linebacker out to the flat which clears that pattern for dorsett to come behind in the open space where that smae linebacker would’ve dropped back had mike james not cleared him out, beautiful use of personnel.

Nash, that is why a caption on my Facebook picture of a pair of shoes reads:

    Mark Whipple owes me $392.

    Retail therapy post UVA.

UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE that we didn’t run more on the worst rush defense in the ACC.

One year later, the shoes are still here, but he’s NOT! hahahaha

    Ms Clark

I remember muggs talking bout the UVA game should have been won no matter who the qb was….

How u gonna win a game as soon as the offense gets to the red zone the dumb oc starts callin pass plays that go for ints

Fast forward to this years ints are down exp in the red zone and like Luke said the qb can’t get no credit…

Hell u had ppl wishing for Ryan Williams and all he did at Memphis is best out Cannon Smith…lol…talk about a green tree legend

nash, i’m wondering which part/s of this team is “enjoyable to watch” now, can’t be the “so called” 81st ranked offense. So i take it they must only be enjoying special teams, unless you can think of any other part of the team that’s enjoyable to watch that i missed, let me know, oh yeah, the freshmen team and scout team!

    LOL….

Didn’t we have the same record at this point last year??

Must be enjoyable to watch the Dco getting schooled by a d2 team….

    ——————————————-

I think its funny and sad at the same time that UVA has given Miami some of its most painful memories the last few years.

    Of all schools, UVA?

I think that should tell everybody where Miami was on the totem poll that is college football. And whats really funny is that there are still people that believe Shannon was close to getting this ship corrected.

In reality, there were numerous holes that a lot of us fans chose to ignore over the years. Discipline was never high here, and physically the team just didnt look right (except for being fast, which we’ve always been). Just look at how much more physically intimidating UNC has looked with Butch there. Not gigantic dudes, but thicker and more solid.

Then there was the constant subbing in/out of offensive linemen. I’ve never seen another college team do that, and I know they never do that in the NFL. Thats something that a novice does because he doesn’t know any better. And then there were the interviews…..

And most importantly, no continuity as far as the coaching staff goes. 2 offensive coordinators, 3 defensive coordinators, and a bunch of other guys that were sub-par at best. Not gonna win anything significant if you cant keep the same system in place for at least 2 years.

I think the correct outlook of this team had Shannon stayed would’ve been a perennial 8-9 win team that looks okay against teams just like them, but once they face a better team they will get exposed in a big way. It would’ve been a repeat of the 2005 team every year.

  95. jake weiclaw, another one of those 2008 randy shannon recruits showing out. nash, bg & cav, funny how j12 has thrown 62 touchdown passes with laron byrd being a starter for at 2 & 1/2 years. In the mean time(nash fo sho) ken dorsey had andre johnson, shockey, winslow, roscoe, kevin beard, mcgahee, portis, andre king, a buunche of 1st round talent on offense, can’t forget “lock your daughter’s closet” najeh davenport: and all this guy has is 80 touchdown passes. Since j12 has been here, who’s been drafted in the 1st round on offense, ok how about 2nd round(skill position player specifically) hmmm. You start to see real clear why j12 is way better than dorsey. Plus he’s more accurate. To throw 50 touchdown passes and during that time span, matt “turn style “pipho was your starting right tackle, i would’ve luv to have seen dorsey be the qb with matt pipho on the right side, many plays would’ve looked like that last play against osu 2002.

  96. Except for the fact that Portis and McGahee went beast mode in the run game and weren’t reliant on the pass like Whipple felt compelled to be..

Thats a very valid point. I see where both sides are coming from though.

  98. When you have a guy like McGahee going off for five touchdowns in a game.. -coughVTcough-..

Or Portis going off for three td’s in a game..-coughPITTcough-..

    Just a couple examples.

  99. I see young yoda was just all ears back when those guys were playing, his full body hadn’t grown yet, this is why he fails to account for the screen passes to james jackson, portis & mcgahee. Gotta give this young yoda some credit, he uses courage/force when posting wrong time and time again. Take your young cholorphyll azz to bed and again, let the grown up discuss football!

  100. I look forward to the day you quit wasting everyone’s oxygen.

Say, during what era did we have our last 1,000 yard rusher??..

    Wasn’t MCGAHEE was it?

  107. Not sure if this had been posted yet….

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami continues to take strides in academic progress, raising the bar yet again in Graduation Success Rates (GSR).
The NCAA announced the Graduation Success Rates (GSR) for all member institutions on Tuesday and Miami established a new athletics department-wide record with a GSR of 89 percent, up from the previous year’s record-breaking 86 percent.
“Due to the remarkable commitment and effort of our student-athletes and the support they receive from our faculty, the administration, the coaches and our academic support division, we continue to celebrate their educational achievements,” said David Wyman, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services. “We are striving to not only sustain our growth but to improve on our performance every year.”
Those numbers are also up from 82 percent in 2009 and the previous high of 83 percent in 2007. The Athletics Department has exceeded the NCAA average for GSR in each of the last seven years.
    NCAA.org: Defining Graduate Success Rate
NCAA.org: Grad Rates Top 80 Percent

Overall, the department has improved from 77 to 89 percent from 2005 to 2011.
Four UM teams posted perfect 100 percent GSR marks, led by women’s golf and men’s diving with seven consecutive perfect marks. Women’s tennis has recorded four-straight 100 percent ratings while volleyball improved seven percentage points from 2010 to earn 100 percent.
Rowing and women’s swimming and diving each set team GSR record highs with 96 percent and 93 percent, respectively.
In the past six years, women’s tennis has made the most improvement, starting at 71 percent and currently earning perfect marks. Football has improved 21 points (67 to 88 percent) while women’s swimming and diving is up 11 marks (82 to 93 percent).
The best year-to-year improvement goes to men’s basketball, who improved nine points from 73 to 82 percent over the past year.
All of UM’s 2011 GSR percentages are listed below.
    Women’s golf, 100
    Men’s diving, 100
    Women’s tennis, 100
    Volleyball, 100
    Rowing, 96

  108. one thing to remember is that Whipple’s offense looked great when it was brand new. Stopped looking great once teams adjusted to what he was trying to do and he didn’t adjust to that. Fisch’s gameplan has enough film to where teams can have a good gameplan for it. This is where he’ll show he’s got the goods or not. If the offense is clicking the rest of the way then we can feel like we got a good one.

  109. I agree with UChamps up there.

But if we’re assuming things…..I truly believe Dorsey knew his limitations, and was all to happy to take the easy out. He might not have 96 TDs and a 37-2 record as a starter, but he prolly wouldn’t have 40′sumthin career picks either.

  110. I see that their TE doesn’t appear on the stat sheet.

Anybody else think that he will, after this game…?

  111. Este,

You got it right there. That was my issue with Nix, Whip, and Olsen. Situational playcalling and the inability/stubbornness in making counter-adjustments.
Like say we’ve got 1st and10….Then we run and only pick up say two, making it 2nd and 8….

Why is there always a 9.9999999 percent chance we throw on second down? We never run a second time, in that situation. Ever. It’s mildly less predictable under Jedd now. But we still quit on the run too early on drives.
And I’m a guy who personally likes to see the ball fly all over the place. But I want to win even more than that.

  112. CanesCanesCanes says:

Even though I was disappointed in J12′s performance last year, I always supported him as part of the Cane family and for the way he gutted it out when a lot of others may have packed it in.

The final chapter of his story has yet to be written, and I know we all wish him great success as an important part of what we hop us a big turnaround.

By the same token, Ken Dorsey was a great Miami Hurricane who led us to one NC and another that was stolen.

His book has been written. It is what it is. The results are undeniable. I don’t see the point in these J12/KD comparisons. Does somebody have a time machine that I don’t know about where J12 is going to travel back to the past and start for our 2001 team?

J12 will probably end up very high in the record books for UM quarterbacks. Hats off to him.

Nothing will change the hall of fame career KD had at the U, either.

    NEW BLOG UP!

  119. U champs,

remided me of something I read last year about the UVA game ….

Look at one UVA player said in the Washington Post.

Fifth-year senior middle linebacker Darnell Carter said Monday that the defense had elevated its preparation — including a lot of film study — in the week leading up to the Miami game. That paid off Saturday when the Virginia defenders, according to Carter, were recognizing Miami’s frequently used formations and plays and were calling them out before the snap.

“They seemed pretty surprised, because we was just right in the spot where the play was before the play even happened,” Carter said.
