Revisited: EOTH’s Top 25 Players (19-22)

Our trip down memory lane continues as we revisit our pre-season Top 25 Countdown . . .

#22:  Andrew Smith:  Although he only received a few votes in the Top 25 pre-season countdown, this 4 year letterman provided much-needed depth on an otherwise depleted defensive line.  Smith played in all 12 games on the season, starting four, registering a career-high 24 tackles, two of which were tackles for loss.  Smith had his best game against then-No. 17 Ohio State, with five tackles, and registered four tackles twice – in the season opener against Maryland and against then-No. 20 Georgia Tech.

Preseason EOTH Top 25 Rank: Not Ranked

Top 25 Change: N/A

#21:  Micanor Regis: Another solid contributor on the defensive line who most definitely had a “ball” on the field, especially so in Chapel Hill, Regis played in 10 games, including six starts at defensive tackle, finishing the season ranked sixth on the team with 41 tackles and tied for third on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, finishing fourth on the team with two sacks.  Regis had a team-high four pass break-ups and recorded a season-high six tackles and one tackle for loss against Kansas State and four tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss against Florida State.

Preseason EOTH Top 25 Rank: #13

Top 25 Change: Minus 8

#20: Jake Wieclaw:  This 2011 Lou Groza Award Semi-finalist and 2011 UM Special Teams MVP waited patiently behind Matt Bosher for years for his opportunity to see the field.  What a pleasant surprise he turned out to be.  Wieclaw played in all 12 games while serving as the team’s primary placekicker, assuming duty on kickoffs and field goals, finishing the season perfect on point-after attempts, converting 39-of-39, limited opponents to a 18.6 kick return average for the season, and connecting on 11-of-14 field goal attempts with a season-long 43-yard field goal against North Carolina.  Wieclaw proved to be clutch under pressure when, in dramatic fashion, he converted a 36-yard field goal as time expired to lead the Canes to a 6-3 victory over USF.

Preseason EOTH Top 25 Rank: Not Ranked

Top 25 Change: N/A

#19 Jo Jo Nicolas: After suffering a personal tragedy of the loss of his child only weeks before the 2011 season began, Nicolas continually put the team before himself in what became his break-out season.  Nicholas started all 12 games of the season, one of only four defensive Hurricanes to accomplish the feat, finishing third on the team with 66 tackles, leading the team with two interceptions, and also recording one pass break-up, an interception, and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown against then-No. 20 Georgia Tech.  His best game came in Chapel Hill where he made a season-high 10 tackles against North Carolina.

7 and 26 barely regressed if any..

They only combined for about 6 picks last year as it set.. Re Re sat out for what, 5 games this year and VT pretty much disappeared as he always did after a promising start two or three games in..

It’s like they went from poo, to runny poo.

And I wonder what the excuse was for our pass defense in previous years? Why was it so bad the first few years, and only good last season despite having upperclassmen starting for the last three seasons?

I see one-hit wonders are the thing now…

Nash — She’s good. She’s back home, outta Shands. had what was called a Plasmacytoma, rather than Multiple Myeloma.. Which is better, cancer was confined to just one bone (the broken femur, which was removed entirely and replaced with a titanium rod) so she’s rehabbing now, moving much better.

nash, lol, don’t call out the “mac staff” like that, they trying their best. Remember, unlike the last staff, we’re going to have multiple fronts, because the ends can actually stand up and wait for pulling guards to blast em since they give up leverage by standing up before the snap.

Uchamps, yeah dawg, had it not been for that defense and percy harvin flippin the field, no way do the gaytors win any of those championships. Going to be real interesting to see how duke johnson transitions to the college game.

Tampa Bay high school football > Miami-Dade/Broward high school football

They may have some more speed or some supposedly better athletes in Miami-Dade/Broward, but Tampa Bay has some speed and smarter athletes that play better as a team

Those championship games between Plant/Miramar & Armwood/Miami Central weren’t even really as close as the scores indicate

The coaching staffs up here are ridiculous at some schools – Plant, Armwood, Lakeland, Bradenton Manatee, etc. Now, if you put some of these staffs down in Miami-Dade/Broward with those players, then they could be juggernauts – but, they’re not and the Tampa Bay teams will always have that advantage

Name me the best coaching staff down there. Maybe St. Thomas Aquinas? they’re not even really a normal school anyway since they basically recruit their kids to go there from all other schools

I was talking with a photographer at the game, he went to Miramar and is a huge Canes fan. I told him after the Miami Norland game that the Tampa Bay teams were going to go 3-0 against Miami Central, Miramar, First Coast. He said no way that Central and Miramar lose

    Alright

    3-0 in the big boy divisions (5A, 6A, 7A, 8A), 2-0 against Miami-Dade/Broward schools for the title

Bennie – have you seen the Bucs this year? Total clusterf*ck of a situation going on at One Buc Place

Raheem has lost the team. The OC should’ve been let go after last year, yes, even with their 10 wins. The front office should never have given the type of money they did to Quincy Black before this season started – what in the hell did they see in his 1 year of filling in at LB to make them drop that kind of coin on him? The front office was idiotic in not signing a free agent RB to either back up Blount or take his job – let’s see, the Pats have how many RBs and drafted how many more this past year? The Saints drafted Ingram, already had how many RBs and then go and get Sproles? The Ravens go get Ricky Williams. Broncos get Willis McGahee. Bucs get … (crickets). If Josh Freeman wants to go shoot a gun at a range for the first time in his life, why the f*ck did he have to choose a hand cannon for a gun (Desert Eagle) – oh, so he could hold it incorrectly and have the kick from it put a huge cut on thumb/base of his throwing hand and completely jack up his throwing for 5 weeks of the season? Why is Preston Parker so damn stupid and lazy that he doesn’t even know where to line up in formations and K2 has to literally grab him by the arm and throw him to his spot, like a mother does with a child that won’t go to where they need to be after being asked for the how many-eth time – hey Preston, it’s called the film room and playbook, use it and study it you lazy ass. Why did the Bucs even draft Gerald McCoy in the first place? Why didn’t they address the needs at DB, AGAIN, this year – news flash, EJ Biggers is not starting DB material in the NFL, you don’t have to be Ted Thompson to know that. Then again, it took them forever to finally cut Sabby Piscatelli b/c he was a walking abortion procedure on 2 legs at the Safety spot, so, that is cold hard proof that there is mental retardation still floating around the Bucs office

Jeff Fisher can’t be hired fast enough for the Bucs. Keep Raheem on as an assistant coach if he wants. It’s not exactly Raheem’s complete fault either – much like the Canes needed to flush the turds on the team down the drain, so do the Bucs

That’s also why it was hilarious to me when Gerald McCoy was making fun of the Super Bowl statue of Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, Alstott, Gruden, etc. in front of One Buc Place – saying that Sapp looked a little fat in it

Sapp responded saying “who the f*ck are you again?”

Suh = Peyton Manning. McCoy = Ryan Leaf

Reggie Northrup – First Coast – Linebacker

    – It is tough to make a case for a defensive player on a team that lost 40 – 0, but in Northrup’s case, it is well deserved. Northrup left it all on the field Friday evening and tallied 11 tackles. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker was all over the field and did his best to give the Buccaneers a chance. Playing alongside two other stud linebackers in class-of-2013 prospect Daniel McMillian and North Carolina commitment Joseph Jackson, it is easy to be overshadowed, but on the night, Northrup was the top linebacker. Northrup is currently committed to the University of Miami and I expect him to sign with them on signing day.

Not calling him a bad player at all. Just didn’t see what the hype was about — many argued that if he sticks he’ll be the best incoming LB.. Whereas like you I think the Kirby is probably the cream of the crop incoming.

I’ll also take the 6th Round non-Heisman or National Championship winning QB from UMichigan that is a 3 time Super Bowl winning, 2 time Super Bowl MVP that also wasn’t a 1st Rounder that is called the “greatest college football player ever”

Such an admitted man crush on Brady, Belichick and the Pats organization that it’s sick

Pats have the worst defense in the NFL when it comes to total yards, one of the worst when it comes to passing yards in the AFC, running game that is crap for the most part (only 80 yards or a little more against their last two opponents – Colts, Redskins) …. and they still go into the house of a team with a nasty D that has Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, Goodman, DJ Williams, etc. that also has a very strong running game – come back from being down to beat them pretty convincingly

It’s not often you can find cornerbacks that are 6-foot-2 and 197 pounds. But Travell Dixon (Thatcher, Ariz./Eastern Arizona JC) is just that, and he’s down to a trio of programs.

“It’s gonna be Alabama, Florida State or Mississippi State,” Dixon said. “I still don’t know what I will do. They are all great schools. It’s going to be a decision from the heart.”

Dixon, originally from Miami Norland High School, didn’t sign with anyone out of high school. He decided to go the junior college route and said it was the best thing for him.
