The Streak: Weeks 6-10

~ The following article was contributed by beloved Eye of the Hurricane blogger, Delray ~

On September 21, 2003, the Miami Hurricanes continued their humble streak of 5 games where a ‘Cane scored a touchdown in an NFL game and persisted on through October 19, 2003 to take it to 10 games.  Let’s take a look at some big weeks and a few where we “squeaked” by.

Week #6

During the 3rd week of the NFL season in 2003, the Hurricanes saw the endzone 5 times with both Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson dancing twice, and Vinny  Testaverde completing a pass for a touchdown.  Both of Wayne’s passes came in the 3rd quarter on completions of 3 and 28 yards from Peyton Manning and helped the Colts defeat the Jaguars 23-13.  Johnson’s reception came from David Carr with a long of 43 yards in a loss to Kansas City 42-14.  Vinny’s pass was to Wayne Chrebet in a losing effort late in the 4th as the Patriots defeated the Jets 23-13.

Week #7

Week #4 of the 2003 season was kept alive by Bubba Franks as he tallied the only ‘Canes score of the week.  It was a mere 1 yard pass but it came on Monday night in the 4th quarter in a win against the Chicago Bears.  Thanks, Brett!

Week #8

Week 5 of 2003 saw another 1 touchdown performance. The savior of the day was Clinton Portis, who burst for a 65 yard run to put the Broncos up 20-10 against the Chiefs.  Kansas City would come back and win the game 24-23.  Portis would finish the day with 141 yards on 23 carries.

Week #9

Week 6 of the 2003 season saw ‘Canes all over the scoreboard.  Introducing himself to the list was fan-favorite Najeh Davenport, who scored on an 18 yard run.  The Pack was defeated by the Chiefs who pushed their record to 6-0 on the season.  Also, repeat performances from Reggie Wayne (who connected from Peyton from 25 yards out in a losing effort to the then undefeated Carolina Panthers),  Bubba Franks (on another 1 yard pass from Brett Farve),  Santana Moss (hooked up with Vinny from 4 yards for the Jets 1st win of the season),  and last but not least, Ed Reed (blocked a punt and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown).

Week #10

2003 week #7 saw 4 ‘Canes score.  The highlight of scores came on Najeh Davenport’s 74 yard run against the Rams.  Back then the Rams were not known for their defense.  They would give up 30 and score 40.  Still, this was an impressive run by Najeh.  Jeremy Shockey probably didn’t show up at someone’s house that day because he was too busy leading the Giants with 5 receptions including a 1 yard pass from Kerry Collins in a losing effort against the Eagles.   Clinton Portis had an 117 yards on the day including a 4 yard rushing score in a loss to the Vikings.   Vinny again connected with Santana for 18 yards and a score for the Jets 2nd straight win of the season, coming at the expense of the Texans.

Stayed tuned next Friday as we look at Weeks #11 through 15.

  1. HELP!!!

  2. You need a jello shot, Delray?

Great job as always, by the way!

Sooooo glad you came up with this idea at the BC tailgate! :-D

  3. Now I remember why I forgot the spring game date, out of town for a wedding (see that’s proof we try to block out the negative)…can’t campaign for Luke this year

  4. Neither,

    On a diet.

  5. Ug! People are so inconsiderate with their nuptuals!

They are supposed to fall between the bowl game and NSD or after the spring game and before fall practice starts!

I’d say we’ll pour some out for you, but I’d rather do a toast in your honor!

  6. why are you on a diet?

you want one with sugar free jello?

Five-star 2013 running back prospect Kelvin Taylor (Belle Glade, Fla./Glades Day) appears to be closing in on a college decision.

Taylor announced on Twitter that he would be making a decision next weekend.

BG, any chance on this kid? You listed him 5th on the “We got next:2013 Offense” write up.

He is Fred Taylor’s son also. Have we offered Bryant yet?

^^^We haven’t offered Bryant yet. Also Taylor is very friendly with Jacory Harris. I’m not sure how much of a shot we have, but I’d think Florida would have to be the team to beat for Taylor.

  11. Just hold the jello and go with straight Tequilla

  12. Yeah guys on CI board seem to like UF/Bama for Taylor. Know a lot of people knock the competition he plays against too.

  13. I know it point wise we had a chance to win this game and also stat wise we were in control in the 1st half, but I can’t help but feel like FSU punked us last year. I know its only the highlights and their good plays but man we look bad during these plays…BAD!

  14. Listen to Warren Sapp with the Playmaker: http://www.wqam.com/index.php?page=781

  15. FSU had 21 points taken away from them BG. That feeling you get toward that game isn’t unfounded.

  16. HernandoCane says:

I wouldn’t trust what Taylor says yet. He’s loves and wants the attention. If he commits now he’ll find that the spotlight will go elsewhere. So expect him to open things up or start taking visits once he feels forgotten

  17. I said he was going to be the best DB in the state of Florida this year … but Rivals has him rated #10th overall of all prospects

  18. Chronicle was alright.

I prolly woulda goofed off a little more with that type ability, but they pretty much captured what kids in their situations would’ve done with that power. Take out that annoying camcorder sh!t, and its a good look.

  19. Eli Manning loses his QB Coach and the Bucs now have an OC

  20. CanesCanesCanes says:

Diggs to Maryland. Gotta love the turds reaction. An hour ago they wanted to gang dry hump him. Now he’s a pathetic loser and must have been paid off. Sure, powerhouse Maryland gave him a bag of subway tokens.

  21. I’m pretty impressed by a kid who basically said, “Whateva….” to a chance to play for any type BCS championship, and picked the school he really wanted to play for.
UMD may have pieced him off wit some B-More cheesesteak, but kudos to them for slowly getting their small football program some shine. (First the screwy unis, and now a blue-chip recruit)

From a personal standpoint….I thought he was overrated, but he’ll prolly touch the ball a lot in his career, most of that.

  22. CanesCanesCanes says:

Whatever UMD used to entice him, if anything at all, it’s not going to be more than the monthly Bull Gator cash stipends disbursed to top stars. Believe that.

Good call, you been on it for a minute now. At the same time, only the strong ones will come in after this 2012 class. he might look at the depth chart and see guys lined up and say to himself, man, they deep over there now. Although we did only take 5 cb’s, that seems like a lot, but a few of them might be moved to safety. In fact, i wouldn’t be surprised if deon bush got put at db instead of safety, but we’ll see how all these “multiple packages” unfold.

That’s one of the main things that was impressive to me about that game, fsu for the most part had the more physical team, had done better work in the weight room up until that point. You could tell where we were and where we’re headed. We have another level that we can go to that will leave alot of teams in the dust, “PROCESS” and than “DESERVE VICTORY”

  33. Thank god for Jeremy Lin, seems we gonna get a break from all the press adulation of Tebow!!

  34. Word up Bori,

Lin has officially replaced Bruce Lee as my favorite American of Asian descent.

    #MADISONSWAGGARDEN

  35. Bori – Lin said that he is inspired by Tebow and wants to be like him .. so that’s a negative ghost rider, the more Lin succeeds, the more Tebow you’ll get

  36. Just type in the following to Google search: “jeremy lin tim tebow” and watch what pops up

Nothing but tons of articles comparing the two and tons of articles stating that Tebow is Lin’s inspiration

  37. hey bori – i don’t find canes-fsu bb on first row

. . . you got another link for me?

  38. I gotta think we have a great shot to land Vernon Hargreaves. His dad coached here for almost a decade. And who wouldn’t want to be in a DB duo with Tracy?

  39. BG,

what about Fred Coppet? I know he’s small but wasn’t he better than Dami this year at STA?

  40. CanesCanesCanes says:

Dix – did Lin really say that? He actually has some skills. He’s a real point guard with skills. Teabag is a low IQ fullback masquerading as a QB.

Lin – qualified academically to get into Harvard on his own (no athletic scloarships @ Ivies). Plays smart with skills.

Teabag – 850 SAT with a privileged upper middle class upbringing. Dumb as a bag of rocks. Can’t read defenses. Can’t learn and run a standard NFL offense. Plays dumb with little skills. Yes he’s fast for his size, is a good runner, and can truck people. Not a long term QB

The two are nothing alike. Leave it to the media to find a Teabag analogy under every rock.

My feelings are getting inflamed and I’m going to pop off pretty soon with regards to them and the NCAA. I’m coming for them both [UM and former players] and I’m going to be successful.

“I’m taking that program down to Chinatown and the former players and links to that program. Why? Because the U.S. government lined up 47 former players to testify against me in open court if I went to trial. That in itself is motivation to shove it up their collective [butts].”

I bet it’s cold up there!

We were at Havana Hideout tonight (featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives, f’ibg amazing Cuban/Mexican food!) and they only had outdoor seating.

I was fine but my dinner companion (from Boston and some other cold places) was doing everything short of rubbing sticks together for warmth!

I love 50s in FL! Got to break out the boots and tights!

But yeah, 10 is nuts. It gets way cold in MO. And then it will be 75 the next day.

You and Canechic need to visit Springfield! It’s fun! Lots of great restaurants and bars. It’s like Trailernasty except it is northern Arkansas instead of lower Alabama. I gave Canechic a list of restaurants to try plus there is the original Bass Pro right by my high school. It’s pretty amazing. Spans like 5 city blocks.

    Stay warm!!!

Lil santana, and the main thing is, we all know how good of a job coach young mcdonald is doing at the wide receiver spots. These guys are going to be real confident in what they doing, and i like the fact that young mcdonald is not afraid to get on the receivers, i like how he got at streeter last year, although it wasn’t as ahrd as it should’ve been, but he did it the right way taking pre-caution that streeter might’ve still been fragile from dealing with the last crew. I’ll say this though, this crew understands more how to motivate players a whole lot more than the last crew. You win that battle and you’ve won 85% of what you need to get done as a coaching staff.

fsu will be in for a rude awakening if hurns is healthy “God Willing” this year, he played thru that shoulder injury the alst half of the season, add to the fact that streeter started emerging, but i know this much, a healthy hurns would more than likely have been a starter last year over either street or travis, but ti never hurts having to receivers with the speed that travis and streeter have on the field at the same time, just none of them are more complete than hurns. I’m not worried about our wide-receiver crew, we’ll be ok in that department, this is they’re grooming year, hurns has taken over as the safety net receiver hank was before he left, here’s to both of them guys getting healthy. Going to be real interesting to see the improvement in dorsette’s game, i know him, like hurns right now are the 2 best route runners on the team, they sell they’re routes, good luck guessing where they’re going if you not playing press-man.

Which is why i don’t like the 3-4, it relies on alot of odds. For instance, most d-co’s know that most wide-receiver patterns are with the 7 to 10 yard range, and maybe 1 receiver being call for a deeper route, so that scheme likes to sit it’s db’s in that area, but as everyone could see, if you stay in that type of defense, you’re going get bubble screened all day!

  63. Hurri a.k.a. headmcguilt, you gone like this one, they were discussing that this year is going to be a good year for boxing if all the fights take place. So somebody starting talking about the peterson vs khan rematch. Of course some were saying “ok, it’s at a neutral site now, so khan will get his ttile back” than somebody said, “losers always making excuses, but winners, when they lose, they lose with class and give credit to the other fighter.

Again, somebody started trying to defend & say peterson & company stole that title, so somebody came on and say, “Oh, you mean amir “track & field” khan, rofl!

  64. Cal,

I actually had Khan winning by a point….But it really was close enough to say “Either way.”
And hell no, being in DC had nuthin to do with it. Peterson brought it to Khan, and a judge awarded the more aggressive fighter.
Again…I though Khan won…But I don’t have a problem with the decision, and was glad to see the work Peterson put in, get rewarded. He was gunning for that KO.

Actually i had it as a draw myself, but when i look at the fight again, you can make a case for peterson actually winning by 1 point, because the 2 times he went down, the 1st one the ref said it wasn’t a knockdown and rightfully so because lamont actually tripped over the refs leg, the 2nd one that the ref counted he actually tripped over khan’s leg, so if you take that away, an like you said, they awarded the aggressor, khan actually should’ve lost the fight, which he did!
