The Streak: Weeks 16-20

~ The following article was contributed by beloved Eye of the Hurricane blogger, Delray ~

Let’s jump right into things this week as we look at weeks 16 thru 20 of “The Streak.”  This installment will encompass weeks 13 thru the final week 17 of the 2003 season.  Let’s see who keeps the streak going and who joins the party.

Week 16

The 13th week of the 2003 season saw some of the usual suspects keeping the streak going and 2 new faces joining the party during the Thanksgiving weekend games.   Bubba Franks caught a 5 yard pass from Brett Favre against the Lions on Thanksgiving, but wasn’t enough as the Lions defeated the Packers 22-14.  Clinton Portis had two -1 yard runs as the Broncos beat up on the Raiders 22-8, running for 170 yards on 34 carries.   Peyton Manning connected with Reggie Wayne on a 13 yard pass in an epic battle with the Patriots in a losing effort, 38-34.  Joining the party this week are:  Andre King who scored on a 28 yard blocked punt to avoid having his Cleveland Browns shut out by the Seahawks 34-7, and finally, Ray Lewis scored on a 23 yard interception off of Jeff Garcia as the Ravens defeated the 49ers 44-6.

Week 17

The 14th week of the 2003 season was a record week for 1 Cane running back.  Clinton Portis scored 5 touchdowns, including 3 in the 2nd half, as he brought his Broncos back for a 45-17 victory over the Chiefs.  Clinton’s runs came on rushes of 11, 1, 59, 28 and 53 yards.  He finished with 218 yards total on 22 attempts.   Another ‘Cane running back also had a couple touchdowns.  Edgerrin James took 2 to the house from 2 and 5 yards out for the Colts.  Also, Warren Sapp had a game-winning touchdown as the Bucs defeated the Saints 14-7.

Wait,   Warren Sapp!  A Touchdown catch?  I’ve checked this out and it appears to be true.

Week 18:

Week 15 of the 2003 season was kept alive by Reggie Wayne and Clinton Portis.  Clinton continued his assault on the end-zone following the previous weeks 5 TD performance with 2 more as the Broncos defeated the Lions in overtime 23-20.  Clinton also eclipsed the 100 yard plateau finishing with 138 yards on 38 carries.  Reggie hooked up with Peyton for 14 yards in a route against the Atlanta Falcons, winning 38-7.

Week 19:

Week 16 was a nail-biter as no Canes saw the end-zone during the day games on Sunday.  This left only 2 games remaining.  The Sunday night game featured the Broncos and the Colts.  Absent from the game was Clinton Portis.  Reggie Wayne was out as well.  However, we still had Edge, who broke through for a 16 yard run in the 2nd half to keep the streak alive.  The Broncos defeated the Colts 31-17 in a battle of 2 of the better teams in the AFC.  This was one of those weeks when we look back at the streak and circle.

Week 20:

The final week of the 2003 season saw 3 Canes hit pay-dirt.  No new faces.  Just the same guys grinding it out.  Bubba Franks scored early against the Broncos on a 2 yard pass as the Packers destroyed the Broncos 31-3.  Clinton did not show up in the stat sheets so I can only guess he was still injured. Edge had a monstrous day against the Texans with 27 carries for 171 yards which included a touchdown in the 4th quarter that sparked a 17 point come-from-behind victory over Houston.  Phillip Buchanon also got back into the touchdown column as he returned a punt 80 yards against the Chargers.  Buchanon’s TD proved to be not enough as LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 243 yards and had a late 4th quarter touchdown as the Chargers defeated the Raiders 21-14.

Thanks for tuning in this week and if you haven’t had the chance to vote for your favorite picture on the Eye of the Hurricane’s Facebook page, please cast your vote.  Even if you don’t vote for the me.  That’s cool.  It’s important to show your “Cane Pride.”

Don’t foll yourself, b-wash wanted to play tackle since he got here, than once he found out it wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be, he wanted to go back inside, by that time though it was to late because the coaches already saw enuff from linder and gunn to not move b-wash back inside. b-wash played left tackle in highschool and wanted to continue that in college. Always had his eye on that spot!

This game is too hard not to have guys like Charles on your team. Because when you play in this league, and it hurts, and you’ve got problems at home, and you’re feeling down, you need somebody who is going to pick you up. Charles was doing that all day in his group. He was the one revving those guys up, motivating them to go hard.

Wait a minute, are they saying coaching matters:

Fisch’s coaching. He did a terrific job with Harris after joining UM from the Seattle Seahawks, and there’s a reason NFL teams, including the Chicago Bears, wanted to hire him this winter. Harris said he learned more from Fisch, who worked under Mike Shanahan and Brian Billick, in one summer than he did in two years under Mark Whipple. “Fisch does a great job,” Harris reiterated Thursday from the NFL Combine. “He really interacts with you.”
Walsh, now coach at Cardinal Newman High in West Palm Beach, put it this way: “Jedd is a self-made man. He has taken bits and pieces from a lot of coaches. You could tell last year Jacory was cognizant of not throwing it up for grabs. That’s coaching.” Recruiting analyst Larry Blustein said Fisch’s “philosophy, work habits, working with mechanics have been awesome.”

Your eye for what a good offense is, is best soley upon stats. This offensive system in place with jedd will get better with better execution and it puts players in position to make plays, it has eliminated basically most of the negative plays that constantly showed up under the last 2 offensive systems. The offensive system as it is now is way more efficient. The tight-ends will be way more involved than in the past simply due to the natural progressions of this system.

But nah seriously, I dont think it was a no brainer. I dont know the extent of his shoulder injury, but really wat was he a red-shirt sophomore? Its not like it woulda been crazy if he stayed another year. In 2010 he shared snaps with D Berry and this was his first year as a feature back ala Streeter at WR yet ppl think he shoulda stayed but i understand why and the difference. Just sayin I wanted miller time back cause he woulda done big things

aj2 would’ve just let his college stats do the talking, but may have run the 40 just to silence the critics. He would’ve definitely showed why they called him “glue hands” He’s also a go to/safety net receiver.

streeter just needs to continue to show his hands and keep his confidence high, physically, nobody looks better than him at that receiver spot, he runs all the routes, should only get better, he’ll blow by db’s and with his height, if he continues to use his hands, qb’s in the nfl will just start placing the ball in spots.

Philly they left because they are soft, pu$$y a$$ punks.

Oh and throw in losers too. Can’t leave that one out.

We have seen what they have to offer, for the past several years, on the field and that says it all.

Mayock and Golden summed it all up in that interview that was posted.

Leaving college early, after doing nothing noteworthy your entire career, and not even waiting for ur draft projection, is dumb as fug.

    Miller (1st)
    Streeter (2nd)
    Spence (2nd)
    Washington (3rd)
    Vernon (4th)
    Benjamin (4th)
    Regis (7th)

If spence doesn’t go in the 1st round, this draft is a complete farce, at the same time, i can understand if does go in the 2nd since alot of these teams put a lot of sotck into the combine crap, but turn on the tape and all you’ll see is spence showing up basically every game.

Ronny – if the Pats want a guy that just runs go routes on the outside of the hash marks

You ask Streeter to run anything near into the middle of the field and it’s like asking Zoolander to turn left on the runway

Aldarius would be great at the combine if the NFL teams wanted to use him in drills where the DLineman had to show their coverage skills … a NTackle could lock him down

Speaking of Russell Wilson, I saw him at IMG Academy in Sarasota this past week when doing an interview with Chris Weinke

Kid has a Desert Eagle for a throwing arm, can’t imagine seeing him throw a baseball in person from ShortStop

He looked more aboriginal to me than a really tan white guy .. that has a perm

2 other things I walked away with after spending the day at IMG

    1) Tanneyhill is one tall f*cking QB and the Dolphins might have their QB in him

    2) Chris Weinke has Copenhagen running through his veins, there wasn’t a second where he didn’t have a dip in

Make sure to tell Ray Ray when he goes to the combine, that the Indiana Amish Chicken at St. Elmo Steakhouse in Indy is good, so he’ll be alright

Excellent hands. Great body control. Big. Tall. Strong. Fluid. Runs good routs. Proved himself in games. Going to be a great pro, top notch possession receiver. ### Fisch’s coaching.

And I know that Shannon is an easy target but some of these kids share the blame in the recent failures as well. Did TB3 improve since his Frosh year? Did he care? And JaCory had his many flaws but at least he showed that he was willing to work hard this past year to get better. Just imagine if the more talented kids cared as much as he did to improve.

Had an interesting weekend. Miami Nike Combine and 7-on-7 Fire practices.

LB George Williams (6’0, 224) from Hialeah is amazing. He’s really good in pass coverage, has good closing speed for a LB. He also played some FB/TE and caught everything. He’s got some good moves, showing his athleticism. Likes UM, has offers from Nebraska and Auburn, among others. He’ll end up with 30 offers. UM has a good chance here. RED HOT PROSPECT

2015 WR Devante Peete (6’4, 180) of Blanche Ely is a monster. He caught five TD’s this year in spot action, but is really raw and needs to sharpen his skills. Peete is a great route-runner, putting rising senior CBs on the turf with his size, speed, and shiftiness. He’s a natural. His potential is sky-high. He likes Miami. Remember his name.

I did an interview with 2014 WR Henderson Gray of Monsignor Pace on CaneInsider. He registered a 100.62 SPARQ rating. He likes Miami and claims he’s been a fan of the program since he was two. Check out the interview here: http://www.caneinsider.com/content/1518-2014-monsignor-pace-wr-stands-out-miami-nike-camp.html

The Fire 7-on-7 team that won two tournaments last year and is on a current 13-game winning streak, will be even better and is actually more talented than last year’s squad. With all due respect to last year’s team, there’s more big-time college potential in this group. LB George Williams, WR Ahmad Fulwood, QB Tyler Cogswell, TE/WR Tyler Carmona, WR Isaih McKenzie, WR Darren Williams, and CB/S Troy McCollum will play BCS football.

There’s tons more, be sure to check CaneInsider for more information.

Junior guard Durand Scott, who led UM with 17 points and seven rebounds, said for three years he and Johnson have talked about how one thing they wanted before they graduated was to see fans storm their home court.

“It was one of the greatest feelings in my life,’’ Scott said. “I was so happy. I couldn’t stop smiling. I was running around in there with the students, and I got more exhausted there than playing in the game.’’

First-year Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga said the crowd “elevated’’ his team on Sunday, and he hopes there will be “many spinoffs’’ from the electrifying atmosphere.

Cx3 agree completely with the whole “all-star” assessment….the only one of these games that is the least bit entertaining (and that is a real stretch) is the Hockey All-star game. The game is not for the average fan, even Magic sky box ticket holders were required to give their tickets back to the NBA and unable to attend. And after I had my car towed from a normally safe parking lot while making a 5minute delivery to a law firm, whose office is in a building that was having an NBA sponsored party…..needless to say I will be writing Stern to get my $100 cash back….not a fan at all of these silly festivities!

And I thought it was awesome that the students stormed the court….great fun for them!!!! 🙂

FSU was out coached and out played, loved it

Fans storming the court was awesome

Nolie fans getting pelted with fuk u seminoles chant from student section, awesome

Nolie players getting pelted with “wide left” when taking foul shots, LMFAO

Nolie players and fans getting pelted with “safety net school” another LMFAO

Nolie fans leaving at the 5 minute mark, PRICELESS!!

Cubed, I also saw that Brian tweeted something about the “adults” in the BUC being offended or something that the students were doing the “alternate” FSWho war chant.

    WTF?!

Unlike most of you, I like Brian. He’s a really nice guy, loves his ‘Canes, and has always been very kind to me.

But I STRONGLY disagree with that statement.

I’m probably only 10 or so years younger and consider myself an adult and I am BEYOND PROUD of the spirit the students exhibited last night.

That kind of conduct should be encouraged, not frowned upon.

It’s not like any of our Lady ‘Canes fans was slapping a ‘Nole fan who gave her directions on how to leave the stadium with her giant catchers mit paws.

Anyway, agree to disagree, but if I see him this weekend, I’m definitely asking what that tweet was about!

JSQ – I’ve seen Brian around but never felt compelled to talk to him. I don’t personally have anything against him, I assume he’s a decent human being, but I think he’s so anxious to adopt a “hard-boiled, cynical journalist” persona, that he overdoes it trying to prove himself to the journalists around him.

The “alternate” FSU chant was awesome. I can see someone objecting due to language (I have no problem with it) but again, I think it’s his way of trying to show some kind of distance and objectivity.

But to make snide remarks about something so positive as running onto the court, it just really pissed me off. How much crap and negativity have we been putting up with for how long? The not winning, the midget rat, the media onslaught, fighting among ourselves, and then an absolutely fun and positive thing happens, and he has to tweet like the proverbial turd in the punch bowl.

Yeah, Cubed, I don’t get it.

He’s interviewed me for stuff a few times on allCanes Radio and the allCanes documentary and he’s always been a complete sweetheart to me.

The latter story is kind of funny because I left the store after a signing last spring and they chased me down via Facebook to come back (I was just next door at Titanic) to interview for the documentary and I’m like “Well I’m here with [blah blah blah] (UM football national championship winner) and they are like, no, we don’t want him, we want you!”

Very silly because he should have been the person they interviewed but that is how nice he is. He makes you feel really special, even when you are just some random alumna like me.

So I really like Brian, which I’ve said on here a number of times.

But sometimes people say stuff that doesn’t make sense on Twitter. And sometimes people who are really great people can come off the wrong way.

I won’t get a chance to write today’s article until tonight, but I will be making it clear that I think the students’ conduct at that game is long overdue. After some of the garbage I’ve seen at Sun Life, I’m beaming with pride that they feel the same way about the ‘Canes as I do.

    LOL CCC!

As annoying as the comment was, I understood why Beast said what he said. He was pretty much echoing what people on ESPN, sports talk radio & even Leonard Hamilton had said. FSU is ranked 15… not top 5. To the outside eye it seemed ridiculous that the students would rush the court after a win against a #15 team… BUT it was UM vs FSU. It was a rout. It was a sell-out crowd (with A LOT of Nole fans present). We had lost to them 6 straight and 11 of the last 12 tries. We were missing our best player in Reggie Johnson and as fans we were all afraid that without him we would lose… and did I already mention it’s FSU? As ridiculous as we seemed with the” over-celebration”, the bottom line is the players thoroughly enjoyed it, as did Coach L. Hopefully this will be the start of a new attitude towards Canes BB and we were lucky enough to witness to it. 🙂

BTW that hack-a-Cane move by Hamilton with five minutes left in the game was lame as fuu and I’m glad it didn’t work. It was a million times more annoying than Beast’s comment. LMAO!

I’d also like to throw out there, not to one person on here, but in general, that it is a lot easier to insult the people who put themselves out there for the ‘Canes (the players, the coaches, even the die-hard fans that are media covering the ‘Canes) than to actually do what they do.

So the next time people feel inclined to semi-anonymously [as just about everyone on here is] bash someone they don’t know, maybe stop yourself.

No, because you don’t even know that person.

You just disagree with someone’s performance, statement, tweet. That’s all.

Also Spence is surprising because after 4 years of college at a MAJOR school like UM and being a LB you should be able to bench 225 more than 12 times. Hell Benjamin did it 14 and he’s SLIGHT of build and plays WR.

12 reps, lol, the only saving grace spence has for his non-sense number of reps is one, game film, 2: is he hurt. Cause how in the hell does he expect to go in the 1st round posting a 12 rep bench press, although i do know he works on his lower body a lil more. If he was a db, 12 reps would mean something, but you can’t be a linebacker putting up 12 reps, that’s not a good look when you trying to go pro, but the film don’t lie and if he dedicates himself to the weight room at the same time, unless he’s just not into the weights like herschel walker and his 1500 sit-ups and 3500 push-up a day routine. Same i think with troy palamalou, he’s apart of the “no weights” crew!

    Canez1 – that’s your boy

You know you want him to autograph that pic you have of him, on your office desk

and when you watch “Spawn”, you see him in his best performance

On another note, Twitter has done wonders for letting people know just how stupid other people can be .. or take them away from the job they’re supposed to be doing

Remember the tweet in an Al Golden presser, while the Head Coach was addressing the media .. (whom some are lucky to even be there) .. talking about how all he can do is wonder if he’s looking at the next head coach of Penn State? How about showing some respect to the man at the podium, not tweeting or f*cking around on your cell while he is being gracious enough to address you and allowing you to be there in the first place – and saving it for later

That may be me being too anal, but you don’t do that type of crap – certain NFL teams, MLB teams catch you screwing around on your cell phone during the coach addressing the media and you get a warning. Guy has to be less homer-ish as well when talking about the Canes – take the fan-dom-ness out of it. Stop moaning very loudly about what players are being brought in during post-game pressers as well .. ya, may not be who you really want to talk to, but you go with it

He probably is a nice guy, esp. to females .. and that’s just reality … it ain’t personal, it’s a matter of being professional and remembering you’re not where you used to be

Spence has NEVER had good weight room #’s look at the Max bench stuff the past couple years. When a guy maxes 300-310 how many reps do you expect? 10-12 is about right for that max. You have to Max near 400 to get up around 30 reps.

What I am saying is, if you have a difference of opinion, fine, discuss your heart out. If you think he should do things differently, great, you are entitled to your opinion.

What irritates me is the personal attacks.

As I’ve told Mariah’s biggest fan before, when one includes a personal attack in the discussion, it pretty much undermines the credibility of the rest of what they say because if one really has a valid point, they don’t have to include a personal attack.

And I think there is a valid basis for disagreement here, without bringing in any low blows about someone’s appearance or masculinity.

    Not my point, Cubed.

What you did was about what these guys say. If they put their opinions out there, part of the risk in that is that people will disagree with you. Ish happens. Oh well. Comes with the territory.

But some of the other stuff said about him, and others, just is not necessary and is potentially very hurtful.

I imagine he is probably immune to it by now, but that doesn’t make it right.

I have seen or heard about things said about me behind my back and/or online by so-called ‘Canes fans and while the words initially stung, it actually made me feel pretty good about myself because if people spend that much time talking about what I look like or what I do in my personal life, I must be doing something right.

And maybe that is what his commentary is all about. To start a dialog amongst ‘Canes fans.

    It’s a cruel, cruel world.

My co-worker just brings in a client (who looks more like a GQ model and my boss wants me to date) for whom I just settled a case in PA so he can meet me and I can take him around to the other litigators’ offices.

I’m literally wiping drool from my mouth looking at the Holy Hotness when he says (within 1.5 seconds of entering my office and looking at pictures of me and Randy Shannon, Vinny Testaverde and Steve Walsh)

    “You’re a ‘Cane?! I’m a ‘Nole.”

He likes to tailgate too. Almost rented an RV for last year’s game in Trailernasty.

I’m going to go cry now.

WHY DID GOD MAKE PRETTY NOLES?!?!

    Pout x Infinity.

Ug why did I wear my glasses today?

My mom was right, you never know who you are going to run into, even when you work 12 hours a day.

Moms are always right and it is so f@cking annoying.

But I don’t think she would be down with raising half-criminole grandbabies.

Maybe this is all for the best.
