The Streak: Weeks 16-20
~ The following article was contributed by beloved Eye of the Hurricane blogger, Delray ~
Let’s jump right into things this week as we look at weeks 16 thru 20 of “The Streak.” This installment will encompass weeks 13 thru the final week 17 of the 2003 season. Let’s see who keeps the streak going and who joins the party.
The 13th week of the 2003 season saw some of the usual suspects keeping the streak going and 2 new faces joining the party during the Thanksgiving weekend games. Bubba Franks caught a 5 yard pass from Brett Favre against the Lions on Thanksgiving, but wasn’t enough as the Lions defeated the Packers 22-14. Clinton Portis had two -1 yard runs as the Broncos beat up on the Raiders 22-8, running for 170 yards on 34 carries. Peyton Manning connected with Reggie Wayne on a 13 yard pass in an epic battle with the Patriots in a losing effort, 38-34. Joining the party this week are: Andre King who scored on a 28 yard blocked punt to avoid having his Cleveland Browns shut out by the Seahawks 34-7, and finally, Ray Lewis scored on a 23 yard interception off of Jeff Garcia as the Ravens defeated the 49ers 44-6.
The 14th week of the 2003 season was a record week for 1 Cane running back. Clinton Portis scored 5 touchdowns, including 3 in the 2nd half, as he brought his Broncos back for a 45-17 victory over the Chiefs. Clinton’s runs came on rushes of 11, 1, 59, 28 and 53 yards. He finished with 218 yards total on 22 attempts. Another ‘Cane running back also had a couple touchdowns. Edgerrin James took 2 to the house from 2 and 5 yards out for the Colts. Also, Warren Sapp had a game-winning touchdown as the Bucs defeated the Saints 14-7.
Wait, Warren Sapp! A Touchdown catch? I’ve checked this out and it appears to be true.
Week 15 of the 2003 season was kept alive by Reggie Wayne and Clinton Portis. Clinton continued his assault on the end-zone following the previous weeks 5 TD performance with 2 more as the Broncos defeated the Lions in overtime 23-20. Clinton also eclipsed the 100 yard plateau finishing with 138 yards on 38 carries. Reggie hooked up with Peyton for 14 yards in a route against the Atlanta Falcons, winning 38-7.
Week 16 was a nail-biter as no Canes saw the end-zone during the day games on Sunday. This left only 2 games remaining. The Sunday night game featured the Broncos and the Colts. Absent from the game was Clinton Portis. Reggie Wayne was out as well. However, we still had Edge, who broke through for a 16 yard run in the 2nd half to keep the streak alive. The Broncos defeated the Colts 31-17 in a battle of 2 of the better teams in the AFC. This was one of those weeks when we look back at the streak and circle.
The final week of the 2003 season saw 3 Canes hit pay-dirt. No new faces. Just the same guys grinding it out. Bubba Franks scored early against the Broncos on a 2 yard pass as the Packers destroyed the Broncos 31-3. Clinton did not show up in the stat sheets so I can only guess he was still injured. Edge had a monstrous day against the Texans with 27 carries for 171 yards which included a touchdown in the 4th quarter that sparked a 17 point come-from-behind victory over Houston. Phillip Buchanon also got back into the touchdown column as he returned a punt 80 yards against the Chargers. Buchanon’s TD proved to be not enough as LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 243 yards and had a late 4th quarter touchdown as the Chargers defeated the Raiders 21-14.
Thanks for tuning in this week and if you haven’t had the chance to vote for your favorite picture on the Eye of the Hurricane’s Facebook page, please cast your vote. Even if you don’t vote for the me. That’s cool. It’s important to show your “Cane Pride.”
