Miami Hurricanes’ 2013 Opponent Preview

~ The following article was contributed by beloved Eye of the Hurricane blogger, Delray ~

I know it’s early but I wanted to grab a couple stats from our upcoming opponents for the 2013 season and see how they did last season and see how many players they have returning.  Not too many teams have as many players returning as the ‘Canes but still quite a few teams have a significant amount of players coming back. One that jumped out at me is North Carolina having 9 starters returning on defense.  Yeah, I know they lost Gio, but defense wins games. Should make for an interesting season

Go Canes!

~ Delray

  1. high 5 and a black jersey

  2. lol at fsu photo

  3. Nice first, Autumn!

    Orange or green?

  4. If any Floriduh, FSWho or UVGay fans are offended by the photots used to represent their team, don’t be mad at Delray.

It’s the uppity blonde editor who did that.

    Bish is a spitfire…

  5. … and my personal fav is Cleetus from the Simpsons to represent Floriduh.

  6. awesome – we have a “hugo delapenha” at db
. . . so when people are talking about inviting him & his wife to supper:
“should we have the delapenhases over this weekend”?
    . . . lt’s late over here

  7. Love me some Cleetus.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  8. Depth Chart at this point means everything

Spencer Whipple wasn’t the starting QB for nothing at the first release of the depth chart a couple of years ago. That kid was Andrew Luck in orange and green

    …… bahahaha

  9. Water under the bridge, like stated earlier, about the back-and-forth pertaining to the baseball team or football or whatever

Like Canez1 said, a lot of us are pissed b/c of what has happened to our beloved f*cking program – whether it be football or baseball or whatever

I used to go to the Ron Frazier baseball camp when I was a little kid, drove that 5.5 hours just to go. I’ve loved Canes baseball since the days of watching Knight Rider when it first came out. So when I see the program I love take a huge sh*t for years, I get pissed, esp. when I see the reasons why and the people actually running the team I love seem to be blind/deaf to it. Lots of other programs lose recruits to MLB. Lots. There are other private schools that cost just as much as Miami to attend – that still put out damn good squads that are top 10 teams. The lack of coaching up the kids, pounding the fundamentals, etc. … kills me

Hopefully Gino has talked sense into Morris b/c Gino was part of the Big 3 assistants who brought complete studs to Miami and coached them to be dirt dogs. So far, it looks like the Canes are playing Miami baseball – and it’s been way too f*cking long since seeing it

Nice group at LB no matter what happens to #44. But of course it would be a whole lot nicer if he was part of it. Dude was our best defensive player last year. More important though is Porter actually staying healthy. Will be interesting to see how guys are used.

I was counting on a picture of a Klan Rally for the Duke game…

C1 letting strange women kiss him in the mouth, in these streets….sick. Fortunately, I don’t believe mono was invented back then.
I aint gonna even front though…same thing happened to me on New Years 2002. I was out Penns Landing (Philly….WHERE YOU AT BOI?!?!?) an this little short chick was talking about how she couldn’t see of that crowded azz port, that like a million of us were all crammed on.
So I hoisted her up on all 5 feet of my shoulders during the entire countdown.

When it was over and everyone was all going ballistic, I let her down, and she kisse me dead on the lips.

    Hard.

Had we been about 30 mins south on 95, she’s have got the D.

  12. I thought that post said Penis Landing.

I was like “What was Hurri doing at a male strip club?”

My mind is always in the gutter.

    Carry on.

  13. Why the f*ck is the Crocs radio announcer doing the game on Sun Sports?

I hate Mick Hubert. Hate. All that “Oh myyy” bullsh*t he always says

  14. avatar
    UandOMom says:

    Seriously six they are annoying!

  15. If I’m Morris and another one of my players gets hit …. I’m wondering why my own players aren’t staring down their pitchers, wondering when they’re going to get their back

Don’t necessarily have to hit the Crocs back, but send some 2 seamer messages on the inside of the plate toward their knees

  16. No outs. Runners on 1st and 2nd. Your clean up hitter is up, who leads the team in RBI and has a hit in 9 of 10 games … and you try to make him bunt. You could tell David Thompson was pissed as he was walking back to the dugout

Kid is going to be scary good before he leaves, he’s already a stud as a Frosh

  17. Gonna vomit

Brandon Lopez just takes off running from 1st base, with 1 out on a routine fly ball out to the outfield and gets doubled off 1st. I don’t think anyone in the entire ballpark knew why he just decided to run like Forrest Gump

He then drops an easy pop fly b/c he didn’t get under it, instead trying to catch it at his side – his 3rd error of the night – allowing the Crocs to tie it at 2 in the bottom of the 8th

Kid is hitting, but sure the f*ck not doing anything else

  18. Thompson, kid can rake. Why it made little sense to have him try and bunt earlier with 0 outs and runners on 1st/2nd

  19. F*ck yes. Canes finally won after 11 straight Croc wins over them

I agree, choosing to let those guys bunt very questionable

Glad they pulled it out, Go Canes!

  22. Ah Bori, sorry brah, I could’ve done a hell of a lot better job at it … I know this is basically Canes football heavy, so didn’t want to flood it with baseball

I’m also having to work on crazy ass news we have here where a guy is stuck in a house that has fallen into a sinkhole out in the town where Armwood High is. His brother was saved but this guy .. I dunno how they’re going to get him out

  23. avatar

    Six,

You did enough!! Was trying to find an online streaming video or radio and could not find anything!!

Saw that sinkhole in the news, scary! Guy was sleeping and then puff! Gone!

  25. No official release on whether the guy is dead or not. The problem they’re having is the risk factor of trying to get equipment close enough in order to try and get him out

They’re not saying that he’s dead .. or that he’s alive .. they had an official press conference at 6:30pm – all they said was it’s an extremely difficult situation b/c they don’t want to lose anyone else in trying to get him out – take that how you want

    So, we’re in waiting mode

There is absolutely nothing like football.

  33. That chick in Colorado at the resort had some Kobe beef …… too easy and not too classy, but f*ckit, someone had to say it

Huge win mentally for the Canes last night, esp. since they lost 14 of the last 15 games to the Crocs – including 11 straight games and also having their season ended by the Crocs for 3 straight years in the post season

’09 Gainesville Regional. ’10 Gainesville Super Regional. ’11 Gainesville Regional

That monkey just had one of its arms removed from the Canes back

Would love to go down and see first hand how the younger Canes are bringing a certain attitude to the team that hasn’t been seen in years. There better be a few fights out on the field and competitive sh*t talking in the weight room, pushing each other

  39. Rayshawn Jenkins pimping the black jersey. So is Chick.

    TeamTampa in the house

  40. Morris broke the all-time QB power clean record this off-season (292 pounds)
A major focus in the weight room a year ago – achieving the 40/10 milestone of 40 players benching over 20 reps of 225 pounds and 10 players benching over 30 reps.

    UM accomplished that goal.

And this spring, even with a depleted roster after departures from last season, the team is already almost there. One player even got 40 reps – Corey King.

Overall the team has 36 players over 20 reps and there are 11 players over 30 reps.

“When you start comparing the strength level … the first time we did this (after Al Golden took over the program) we had zero over 30 and 11 over (20 reps). That kind of tells you. Look how close we are now to start the 40/10. And you have guys that left, lost some of those 20s.”
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

That last paragraph tells you all u need to know about how far in the crapper this program was.

Anyone thinking you fix that overnight smokes too much crack.

This program was broke, no two ways about it.

Seeing how far we have come in a few short yrs gets me pumped about the future.

Build a solid foundation and culture off the field and the W’s will follow.

Sandland needs to work on that tan. Dude is powder.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  41. Reggie Johnson is looking pretty pathetic so far today. The only positive is that he put a Duke player on his ass and didn’t actually draw a foul.

  42. good i don’t have high blood pressure . .. this game would take me down

  43. Yea safe to say the kid Duke was missing the last go round would’ve definitely made a difference.. Seems like the only thing stopping him are the very few shots he’s missed.

  44. agreed bennie – what a game he’s having

  45. “Overall the team has 36 players over 20 reps and there are 11 players over 30 reps.”

Swasey sucks. So does having to eat something called “breakfast” for the first time in how many years before Golden & Company got there?

These guys couldn’t get to the program fast enough

  46. Ryan Kelly looks like a guy you just want to kick straight in the face

  47. He looks like a fucking mouthbreather. And a pedo at that.

    IMO.

  48. Somebody needs to elbow this dude in the throat.

  49. Bennie – +1 million

Reggie Johnson reminds me of the fat kid at the table in Nutty Professor

    http://cdn.hark.com/images/000/848/902/848902/oh-hercules-hercules-hercul_clink_large.jpg

  50. Big (useless) Reg needs to sit his ass down on the bench. Dude has done nothing tonight except give Duke the ball.

  51. Think the Canes peaked early. Never seen a team go as hot and as cold as rapidly as this bunch.

  52. Don’t like close games at Cameron Indoor..

Usually doesn’t bode well for opposing teams.

  53. wow – how could they lose the ball???!!!

my body is shaking . . .too much adrenaline

  54. Douche Vitale has some white stuff running down his forehead, cheeks and chin..

  55. about 4 possessions i want back
. . .otherwise, GREAT game, great effort from the canes, despite kelley getting in the zone

  56. announcer says “someone gave reggie the wrong game time; he forgot to show up”

    can’t argue about that

  57. F*ck Duke and ratface Krzyzewski. Took a career superhuman effort by one player to barely hang on to win on their own historic court – the hell were they slapping the floor for in the 2nd half after one of their other players hit a 3?

    Three things I learned
    By Eamonn Brennan

    2. Miami is going to be fine. You could argue the Hurricanes were let down a bit by their defense Saturday night, and that they could have checked Ryan Kelly at the 3-point line before he hit those early shots and really started to feel it (and himself). But that would be unfair: Kelly had the game of his career, and one of the best performances in Duke history, in his first game back from a significant foot injury that sidelined him for months. How are you supposed to stop that? No, Miami will be OK: When Ryan Kelly does that, and you still have a chance to win the game in the final minute at Cameron Indoor Stadium, you’re good. It’s really just that simple.

    http://espn.go.com/ncb/notebook/_/page/notebookweeklywatch130303/pick-n-roll

  65. Maybe one day Hurricane Baseball will be able to routinely beat the Gators again. I guess the sun shines on a dogs ass every once in a while (in reference to Friday)..

Horrendous Gator team still steps up to the plate to known down an in state rival..

  66. Knock down, rather.

  67. 13 wins in the last 14 games. Four straight regular season series wins against the Canes. O’Sullivan is now 17-7 against Morris. Crocs have a whole bunch of Frosh, RSFrosh and Sophs on their team that are starters or come out of the bully

Errors once again killed the Canes. Errors have plagued the Canes for way too long

Need some major voo-doo mojo hex breaker for what UiF has over Miami b/c it’s beyond frustrating

Black jersey fits Miami Hurricanes cornerback Tracy Howard a year later

Tracy Howard goes into the 2013 season with hopes of securing the starting cornerback spot vacated by Brandon McGee.

It was Day 5 of 2012 Miami fall camp, and true freshman Tracy Howard — the nation’s No. 1 cornerback out of Miramar High — was already donning the coveted black jersey earned by defensive starters.

Howard was living up to his legend, and Hurricanes fans were enthralled with how easy everything seemed for the local kid with the big smile and alluring confidence.

But eventually, Howard learned like most freshmen that this big-time college football stuff takes time to master, and he would sit plenty on the bench. In the end, he gained perspective, honed his talent, learned patience — and earned the respect of his coaches.

Now, Howard is back in black, and ready to replace his mentor, departed cornerback Brandon McGee.

“The key is, he just had to live up to our expectation, not what the outside’s expectation was for him,” defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said Sunday, the second day of spring camp. “Once they become comfortable and understand that they don’t have to, Day One, come in and be the best corner that ever played. … That’s unrealistic, and it’s really not fair.

“He’s improved because he’s doing exactly what we’re asking him to do. He’s improved because he’s [doing] the same thing that got him here. The reason why he had such success in high school is because he really loves and game, and he will work really, really hard at it.”

Howard ended his first season with 17 tackles and four pass breakups. He played in all 12 games and started the final one at Duke. He’s now listed as a starter opposite junior Ladarius Gunter, who had 27 tackles in 12 games (five starts) last season, plus an interception, two fumble recoveries and six pass breakups.

The 5-11 Howard said he’s up to 182 pounds from his 171-pound playing weight as a freshman. The added strength is helping him master his press technique, among his goals. “I want to work on my press, just stand lateral — quick stabs … and be quick on my jam.”

He said he comes out of his breaks better because of the extra bulk. “Some people say weight doesn’t matter, but I really think it does.”

Howard said he has always had high expectations for himself, but learned to let the process unfold in its own time.

“I learned to be more patient. Everybody wants to come in and be very dominant. But at the cornerback position it takes a lot of learning.”

He said as a freshman “it was more stressful” trying “to learn the playbook” while “executing it at the same time.

“Now it’s about having fun and going out and executing.”

Howard insists the black jersey is an honor he won’t take for granted.

“It means a lot to me. The black jersey shows how much work I put in. But you have to execute to keep it.’

    Interesting Tidbits from SOTU blog:

●The word on the new James Coley offense is that he integrated a lot of what Fisch left behind, including terminology. This means the existing offensive staff was able to just keep on plugging, learn a few new things, and basically just slip right into the new offense without any trouble at all.
●Coach Golden seems pretty set in the belief that David Thompson will, in fact, join the football team after baseball is done. While many of us seem to think he needs to stick with the diamond, it’s going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.
●It looks like Hunter Knighton will be getting a lot of looks at the center position, at least based off of what Golden has put out there. With McDermott hurt, and Wheeler the only real backup at the moment, building depth there is crucial.
●Shayon Green continues to impress in the weight room as well as on the field, finishing in the top 3 of the defensive line group (out of like, 18 guys, in other words). He was a pretty big force for us last year, and seems to be setting up for another productive, although weirdly quiet year.
●The more players and coaches talk, the greater the chances of Alex Figueroa actually starting seem to be. They rave about his work ethic, and the fact that he came in an absolute horse. If he winds up being as good as they seem to think he can be, he may be one of the steals of the recruiting season.

I hear ya PB. What’s sad is Sileo knows a lot more about all 4 sports than most broadcasters. He was clearly more informed about hockey than anyone in the Tampa market.
I never understood why he was so hell bent on bashing the local teams. I hope he learns and gets a job in a market far away from Miami.

    Go ‘canes!

Not mentioned, but are guys like Howard helping out this crop of freshmen? I remember when helping the next group, even if it meant losing your job to them, was common practice for the Canes.

Best news I heard all day.
    Who is his replacement though?

  78. I enjoy that KC Jones now invites me to UM Sports Hall of Fame meetings, lol.

But flattery aside, they are mostly just entertaining because of the people who hit “reply all” to his e-mails.

The boys lost Saturday like I thought they would. Coach K has got a way of motivating his guys after that ass-kicking they got in Coral Gables. I dont even know if ass-kicking is the proper term for what happened to them that day.

The most important thing I got from that game was that it took 36 points from their best player to beat us. When that happens Duke usually wins by at least 25, but we were a bad Shane Larkin pass from tying up/winning the game. That means you are a very good team.

The look in Larkin’s eyes as he left the court gave me assurance too; the guy looked like he just lost his best friend. As long as they keep that hunger, this team will go far in the tourney.

  80. Not sure you can really call it a bad pass when he dished to RJ twice and it went straight through the butterfingers.

  81. avatar
    Daytoncane says:

That last one was a bad pass. He threw it at an angle where Rion (I think it was Rion) couldn’t really get to it and the ball went through his hands. Cant really blame Rion for that.

  82. @ByTimReynolds: Congrats to Telly Lockette for two things. One, being hired at USF. Two, that they’re not UCF.

woulda been nice to just have both.

  84. Willie Taggart making some moves at USF … lose Larry Scott, the guy that recruited south Florida for you and gain Lockette, a guy who lived/coached/breathed south Florida for years

I hope I dont come off as rude to anybody, but if you’re amazed that the offense is doing well in practice then you’re just naive. At this point, Patrick Nix could be our OC and we would probably still be fine. Our personnel is that damn good.

All we need are updates on the other side of the ball, now that the personnel is “good” (as if it wasn’t last season).

Not sure if you saw the spring game last year.

  88. avatar
    Daytoncane says:

Yes I saw it, and I realized that a lot of the personnel were not that far off from their offensive counterparts.

Plus, its much easier to pick up a defense than it is to pick up an offense, which is why defenses usually get a lot better quicker. But we went in the opposite direction. With Gunter and McGee starting, our coverage should’ve been at decent at worst. We actually had pass rushers on last season’s team too; when they were actually allowed to do it.

Not worried about the offense one bit though, and no one here should be.

  89. A Virginia High School coach I know told me earlier today that Figueroa is better than that5star kid going to Bama from Stone Bridge up here.
Then hearing what you guys are saying validates the statement.

    Trust the coaches.
    I’m about to bet money.
    :)

  90. Seems like Figs#2 is a lot like EJ44 in many ways….both mainly under the radar type guys that show up to green tree and reck ish..

Gotta keep the new guy away from the sticky icky green tree tho!!

DZ, I could have told you that. Figs2.0 might have been my favorite recruit from this class (i hadn’t really thought about it so not 100% yet – i’ll wait 4 years to let you know).

  92. Dolphin fans, did L. Miller get any tick tis past season? Has he developed a stiff arm yet?
