Spring Passage

Miami 2016

First off, let me apologize for not having an article out to you sooner.  Sometimes life gets in the way and we do things we need to do rather than doing the things we want to do. So without further adieu,  let’s talk some Miami Hurricanes football!  The Canes are well into their spring practice and the new staff does not seem particularly happy with how the former staff left the shelves stocked.  Some areas of concern are the offensive line, the defensive backfield and wide receiver position.  That will make this upcoming annual spring game a little more interesting as guys will be fighting out for starting time.

635795558266836648-MiamiCincinnatiFootball-0163d

Speaking of the Spring Game (my reason for writing) here are the details….

When – Saturday,  April 16, 2016

Time – 2:00 p.m.

Where – Lockhart Stadium, Ft Lauderdale, FL

Here is a few things I will be looking for during the spring game.

With the offensive line a weak point, will the offense set with two or possibly three tight ends?

Position battle between the DB’s and the WR’s.  Both are short on depth but will one group separate themselves from the other?

Defensive line.  The new staff is anxious to get back to the aggressive type style that brought Miami championships back in the programs glory days.

How will the three early enrollees at the linebacker position look? They have received praise from this new staff, something that they have not given a lot of.

Hope to see you all out bright and early this coming Saturday morning.

Go Canes!

I’m digging what I am seeing so far from this team.

I think the OL will start to catch up. They have been severely under coached for a long time and have two key pieces out for the spring.

The young bucks on D look to be getting after it as well.

Looking forward to seeing what the spring game has to offer.

This team will go as far as Kayaa takes it and from all accounts, ol boy looks sharp.

If we could only get him to use his legs once in a while to sustain drives, the whole team will benefit.

To me whole season comes down to OL and CB play. We get average efforts there, and I think this team shows improvement.

In Tampa this weekend so will miss the Spring Game but I am sure I am going to find plenty to do there…

    Totally agree Shwarm.

We are a better team than last yr across the board, aside from cb and maybe wr.

Richt needs to use Njoku like UNC used Ebron a couple yrs back. Kid should do it all and make up for any wr deficiency there might be.

We also need to find ways to get Berrios the ball. Kid can be dynamic if put in the right position.

Looking forward to seeing Cager develop. Kid has all the tools and an attitude.

    No OL… No Bueno.

There is planty of potential along the OL, a few where All-Americans. Time for Searles to earn his money.

I feel like Shaq is pretty much another Perryman. Knows what to do and where to be no matter what, even as a baby.

Based on what they’re letting us see it appears Gus is running a hell of a lot harder, too. Thought I read that the running backs coach and he had a blowout but everything is solid now. That’s Twitter for you though.

I am also expecting big things from these freshmen lbs and we will have a nice mix of vets and youngins.

The tightend group could be really special, and be used to offset the lack of depth at the wr position. Overall success will come down to the ol not getting #15 killed.

Holy sh*t balls, did anyone else see something called a Fullback and the RB behind him in an I-Formation, I think that’s what it’s called from what I remember yearssss ago … with, uh, it’s what I believe named “play action”?

and also a good ‘ol 4-3?

I drive a 2012 Honda Fit Sport. I don’t give a sh*t, it looks like a little white roller skate. I get to work in 6 mins, so that little f*cker is gonna last a long long time. Overall I thought we looked very efficient yesterday. More “professional” for lack of a better term. Berrios, if he stays healthy, is going to be a problem. Njoku is a freak. Herndon will get used in multiple sets. Plus we got some froshes and a JC transfer coming in that will round out the WR’s. Not worried about them.

Love the car talk, but won’t front and pretend I know the technical stuff. I look at basic specs. Horsepower, times (0-60, quarter mile, etc), handling, and of course the eye candy: styling and interior. Red leather interior with an all flat black exterior is my dream. Everything flat black, including the wheels. Turbo 911 S

Canes dirt dogs taking the series from piece of sh*t Duke. F*ckin hate that school, everything about it and every team they have – esp the football team, which is surprising b/c I’d love to take batting practice on the shins of every single basketball player they have/had

Seventh straight series won by the Canes .. doesn’t matter that they dropped a game to Duke, they needed to lose one along this hot streak they’ve been on so they stay hungry and focused … Morris made sure to tweet out “13 hits, zero errors”

Sounds like common sense, but, you take a look at the overwhelming majority of teams that go to Omaha, their fielding pct and errors are generally in the top 12

Canes have had a history of problems with their errors the past 5 or 6 years. This year, they’re one of the best teams in the nation when it comes to errors – hence, them being #1 and also them playing small ball

Good to see the offense actually using a fullback again. Herndon’s versatility makes him a difference maker in this offense. He can line up in the backfield and shift to in-line tightend or even the slot. Love it. Him and Njoku are going to get plenty of targets this year with the receiver corps looking like Stacy Coley and a bunch of nobodies (although Berrios had a good spring game)

As for cars, I’ve only owned pickup trucks and I’ve had the same Dodge for 10 years and it’s been really reliable. Now, if you want to talk about constant mechanical maintenance, I owned a boat for about ten years too. Not even a big boat. Just an 18 foot race boat with a single outboard motor. The actual engine was generally reliable since I kept it fairly close to stock with just a few minor performance mods but everything else was a constant repair job. Anything electrical in a wet, saltwater environment goes to hell fast. I miss taking my boat out but don’t miss the endless work and $$$ I had to sink into it.

    Nash,

Yes, she arrived on 4.7 (3 weeks early) after 50 hours (no typo) of labor and an emergency c-section with a non-functioning epidural. In other words, I felt everything. They gave me an infection during the surgery and I needed IV antibiotics for a week. Spent 15 days total in the hospital. Just got out on Monday night.

She’s beautiful and perfect. 7 lb., 15 oz., 20 inches long (imagine what she would have been if she went the whole 40 weeks!). No NICU. She’s already smiling at us like she understands what we are saying and she gets impatient and tries to control how you feed her. No idea where she gets those feisty characteristics….

She’s definitely going to hear about her birth when her teen years are approaching. I don’t know a better form of birth control than telling someone they will have their stomach cut open while they are awake with no pain relief.

Anyway, she has her first UM alumna visitor this weekend so she is currently deciding which Baby ‘Canes outfit to wear. She has more ‘Canes outfits than I do. No joke.

Oh, and check out how we also have the MOST first round draft picks in that list. 26, with only 4 busts (one I am guessing is Yatil Green).

  56. avatar

    Hollywood Cane

    April 22, 2016

The list only goes back 15 years. I’ve been trying to think which Miami 1st rounders would be considered busts. I know Mike Rumph is probably on that list. Maybe Kelly Jennings? If you consider injuries you could add Jerome McDougle and Randy Phillips to that list.

  57. avatar

    CanesCanesCanes

    April 22, 2016

I don’t know about Rumph, but Jennings played for a few years for the Seahawks, so if you play significant minutes, and significant years, and especially if you get drafted late in the 1st round, that’s not a a bust in my book.

I don’t know how much Mcdougal ever played because of injuries, but Randy Phillips was a significant cog for the New York Giants for at least several years. So I wouldn’t consider him a bust either.

Clearly people like Yatil Green were a bust

HC – I’m an L&O guy but yet even I have mucho reasonable doubt that a young buck like him would even be close to being impaired like they say on the report. Not at .05.

They got themselves a nice fish they hooked. They didn’t need to pile on with failed roadside test. They had him by rights because he was above .02. In my opinion, they were just piling on

If he was some kind of drunk criminal mastermind, he would’ve insisted on a blood test, which would’ve taken much longer to make happen, and his BAC would’ve been even lower than what they tested for. This kid was truthful in the way he dealt with them and he got burned for it. He also admitted knowingly driving with a suspended license. Just goes to show that he was scared and wasn’t thinking. You should never admit to that

He put up some nice numbers as well, 2,605 yards passing and 23 TDs

He needed to go to a different high school, the one he went to – their offense basically sucked for him to progress as a QB. If he would’ve gone to Plant High or Jefferson High (where Cade Weldon is now and thriving) – Chase would’ve put up some nice numbers and received a hell of a lot better coaching. He was in love with Jedd Fisch, wanted to come to Miami badly

HC, I think we already sell enough season tickets (even last year). Enough to make the stadium look decent, in terms of attendance. The problem is getting people to actually show up for the games. Hopefully with the optimism surrounding the program this year, and with additional seats sold, we’ll have some good crowds. That is, good crowds where people actually show up, rather than have great sounding paid attendance numbers, but embarrassing looking attendance.

True. Paid attendance numbers have been actually better at SLS than the last few years in the Orange Bowl but there’s a bunch of no-shows. I’m hoping with optimism of the new staff coupled with the fact that there’s actual shade now will keep people in their seats. I know quite a few times friends have bailed on home games simply because they were at noon and it was 12,000,000 degrees out. That said, UM season tickets are the best value for sports here. My lower level endzone ticket only cost me $220. That same seat for the Dolphins would have cost triple that price.

Six, I am a huge baseball fan (Mets, so right now is a good time), but I do think they should make some changes to the game to make it more appealing to today’s audience. I have no problem with the leisurely pace of the game, but sometimes it can be like watching paint dry.

No was far as the unwritten rules aspect, have to agree with Bryce Harper and his recent sentiments. I want more Joey Bats bat flips.

  126. avatar

    Hollywood Cane

    May 5, 2016

There’s a few things they can do to improve baseball that wouldn’t compromise the integrity of the game. They need to stop using replay for everything. I know they just started doing it but damn, the game is already incredibly slow. Stop slowing it down even more.

Get rid of home plate umpires. Ever TV broadcast has a K-zone. What the hell do we need some dude standing behind the plate to decide which pitches he feels like calling strikes or not? Some umpires have high strike zones, some have low ones, some change their opinion on what constitutes a strike from one batter to the next. K zone is the same strike zone every at bat. Put a camera over the plate to determine close plays at the plate.

Lower the pitcher’s mound but only slightly. The offensive output in today’s baseball is approaching “dead ball era” standards. 2-1 pitcher’s duels only entertain a very small (and shrinking) segment of the fanbase. It’s no secret that baseball got a huge jolt in popularity during the 90’s steroid boom. It’s because people like to see scoring. At least in American sports. Not saying we need a bunch of 13-10 games but give us something besides overmatched hitters flailing at sliders.

HC those are some good/different idea right there dude. I ain’t been a serious baseball fan in 25-30 years and I just turned 40 on the day this thread was started. No doubt, Nash. My dad’s family is all Cuban so I was playing baseball as long as I can remember. I played little league up until I was about 12-13 years old. I worked at a batting cage in college and I used to crush the 70 mph cage. The 80mph cage was a bit of a different story tho. I still enjoy baseball, even the slow pace is cool sometimes. It’s tough to get behind the Marlins though because the ownership is so terrible. Even though it feels sacreligious, the Marlins Park at the old Orange Bowl spot is really nice. It would be cool if they could just keep a team together for more than a year or two. Maybe they’d actually get a few people to go out to the games.

  130. avatar

    May 5, 2016

shwarma5 – I get pissed as well at some of the lengthy bullsh*t that takes place on the mound when it comes to pitchers taking forever to wait for the right sign .. then stare down the runner at 1st or 2nd .. then stare back at the plate .. then back to the runner .. etc, repeat repeat .. then have the batter step out b/c the pitcher is taking too long

But, usually the other team lets the pitcher know about it and they police themselves – which I love about the game, the unwritten rules

The bullcrap about sliding into someone that is trying to turn a double play – the Chase Utley rule … not being able to plow the catcher at homeplate – basically the Buster Posey rule .. etc, that sh*t pisses me off. That’s all part of the game and has been since 1869. Now, if you’re trying to take out the SS and sliding 5 feet away from the bag, no where near trying to slide into the bag, that’s a whole different story

It’s also stupid in the sense that, are you going to go tell every single kid that is in the Dominican or Cuba or Venezuela or (fill in the blank) Caribbean country that they have to change the way they play if they want to make it to MLB? These kids that are playing ball in the dirt streets, barefoot, with broomstick handles and bottle caps for balls? Come on

I f*ckin hate replay as well Hollywood. I also hate the home plate ump, unless it’s a robot that stands back there and has a preprogrammed strike zone. Anytime you hear an announcer say that this certain ump is a pitcher’s ump or batter’s ump b/c they either have a tiny strike zone or a large strike zone – that’s wrong. I’ll always remember the refrigerator sized strike zone of Eric Gregg in Game 5 of the 1997 NLCS. Ridiculous

  131. avatar

    shwarma5

    May 6, 2016

    HC and Six –

I agree about replay and the home plate ump. I say get a robot/camera system and frankly make the strike zone its true size (meaning bring back a high strike) However, can’t say I agree with lowering mound, as i don’t mind a pitchers duel. Look even last year you had a team (Jays)set a record for HRs in a season. A 4-3 game is 10x more entertaining then a 9-8 affair in my opinion. The hardest thing to do is hit a baseball. I like that novelty.

And in terms of speed, I think the fix would actually be the rule of “one” as I will call it. One time stepping off the mound per batter, one catchers visit per inning, one time stepping out of the box per at bat and heck, I would go even as far as one pitching change per inning. Make relievers not have to be pure specialists.

Hurri, Remember a while back when you asked me why the qb looks to the coach for plays? I know i told you it means the coach doesnt trust the Qb/qb sucks… but Richt explains it really well:

Richt, on how much trust Kaaya will have to run the offense:

“He’ll change a lot of plays. He’ll come to the line of scrimmage with a lot of two-play, three-play combos — this protection or that protection, declare this guy or that guy the Mike linebacker, run this way or that way – but it’s all predetermined according to what he sees. So he’s not just making up a bunch of stuff. He’ll change a play, but he’ll do it because of what we studied and what we planned.”

Richt then rose from his chair to explain what Kaaya won’t do. He assumed a quarterback’s pose, pre-snap, holding his hands out for the ball.

“You’ll see a lot of guys get into the cadence nowadays, they’ll start the cadence and try to get ‘em to jump offsides,” Richt said, mimicking a hard count. “Then he’ll look to the sideline and the coach will tell them what to do. He’s going to know what to do. He may get into his cadence and get them to show their hand, but then he’s going to call the play.

“I like to teach them what to do and where to go with the ball and who to check to, all of that.”

Kaaya looked to the sidelines a lot — as a freshman, especially — under offensive coordinator James Coley.

“It’s a style of a lot of coaches,” Richt said. “A lot of these coordinators, it’s like they’re playing a video game. They’ll get them to do whatever, and they’ll see it – and they do a great job, a lot of them can see it and make the call. But what happens is when you do a lot of that, when you check, then the defense checks. So if I check, I see a look, and now I go here [to the sideline] and I change for the look, now they change it after we change it … now you’re in a guessing game.”

  133. avatar

Not a fan of slow pitch softball type scores in baseball, even if it’s my team that is putting them up … unless they’re playing the Yankees or Red Sox and hang a TD lead on them – f*ck those teams. I do like a good pitcher’s duel with a game that can be won within 2 runs in the 9th

Of course the trips to the mound can be annoying, esp when they’re buying time for the guy in the bullpen to get warmed up

It’s still a lot better than the horsecrap they pull in soccer, where they drop like they just got taken out by a sniper, holding their shin or whatever, get taken off on a stretcher, then you see them running around on the sidelines after the magic shot of Gatorade … you can’t tell me that doesn’t happen to help delay the game for their team

Baseball isn’t for everyone, just like soccer or NeckCar isn’t either. I hate both. I agree there should be some changes but don’t take out the limited aggressiveness of the game when it comes to how you run the bases or try and take out a double play or lower your shoulder on a catcher that is up the line and blocking the plate

Hurns is just another example of NFL scouts caring more about measureables than production. He set the single season receiving yardage record at Miami and didn’t get picked. It’s not like he’s some bum from the MAC playing in an air raid offense that throws the ball 60 times a game. He was playing in a pro system against good competition with a mediocre quarterback. If you put on the tape all you do is see him get open and make catches. Not just dink and dunk stuff either, he was consistently beating man coverage for deep balls too. He even had a decent junior year too so he wasn’t just a one year wonder. I don’t get it. Good for the Jaguars for giving him a shot.

  144. avatar

The talent level used to be so high that youngsters would have to sit and wait to get playing time and even when they did start playing, there were so many weapons, no single player got all the touches. Guys like Hank and Hurns, while solid, would have been rotational players in the glory years. Duke Johnson obliterated the rushing record because there really wasn’t anybody else on the team to give the ball to. Not saying Duke wasn’t great but he would have never broke the record if he was splitting carries with Willis McGahee or Frank Gore.

Plus, they play more games now and bowl game statistics are counted. Back in the day, you played 11 regular season games and your bowl stats never counted.

Just like when Carlton Fisk got into Deion Sanders face for drawing a money sign in the dirt before he stepped to the plate and also for not running out a pop-up. Like I said, Barry Bonds never did anything like that, ever. Yea, he would stop and stare for a second at the comet he just sent over the fence, but would drop his bat and take off. That sh*t that Bautista did last year against the Rangers – that was a whole another level of f*ckery

Remember seeing Bryce Harper blow a kiss to a pitcher after he hit a bomb. I hate that sh*t and I guarantee his teammates aren’t a fan either, esp if they’re another star on the team and they know they’re gonna get hit by pitch

Meh, baseball players are bithces. Don’t like the bat-flip? Don’t give up a homer. When a pitcher does some over-exaggerated strikeout dance move, is it ok for the next batter up to throw his bat at him? I can’t believe this is even a discussion on a Miami Hurricanes message board. The team that invented showing up your opponent.

Baseball is just a different culture in how they play the game, even can be said in how they respect it. From Ty Cobb to Lenny Dykstra to fill in the blank player today that is a “dirtbag hustler” on the field

Same with football, basketball, hockey, soccer, etc

That’s why people constantly called out Hanley Ramirez for the way he plays, lazy too many times. Jose Lima, when he would celebrate after each strike he threw – come on man – “Lima Time” had its 5 mins of fame, then he flamed out

Some people see golfers as bitches b/c everyone has to be completely quiet while they tee off or take a shot – some will even go as far to not even tee off or attempt a shot b/c a airplane is flying overhead. What, they can’t concentrate when there are people cheering while they attempt a putt or tee shot? Football/Basketball/Baseball/Soccer players have no problem with that in high pressure situations. Same with tennis, everyone has to be quiet while they play instead of yelling and cheering – the f*ck? It’s b/c it’s the culture of the game and tradition

Ask any of the Canes players who are now in the MLB – only guy I’ve really seen pimping it at times was Ryan Braun after hitting a blast, but after looking at the missile he just launched into Canada, he’d run around the bases at a hurried pace

I get what you’re saying Hollywood, but when you think of the Canes doing all that, it’s the football team, not the other sports

Can’t tell me that it didn’t piss a ton of Canes off when the “Gator Flop” happened – there’s still people today salty as f*ck about it. Same with that piece of sh*t Urban Meyer kicking a field goal in 2008 with :25 seconds left to cover the spread and win 26-3 … but yet, we’re the fans of the team that invented it so we’re just getting our own medicine

I never understood getting pissed off that the other team runs and jumps all over your logo at midfield when they win. It’s paint on the ground – they’re not exactly kidnapping your better half and having their way with them after beating you

Six you are 1000% correct. The culture of baseball is not over the top celebration, but the culture of baseball also self-policies. To me that is why the occasional celebration is fine because while it reflects today’s modern culture, baseball’s culture will always self-correct that to remain true.

I think there’s a line you shouldn’t cross but flipping a bat after crushing a homer is hardly the same as strolling down the first base line flipping off the entire stadium. There’s no need to celebrate a bloop single or a meaningless strikeout in the 3rd inning but some of these traditionalists have got to loosen up a bit.

A growing number of MLB players are guys who grew up playing baseball in another country. They don’t have these unwritten rules in the Dominican or Venezuela. These young guys like playing with emotion. The average age for MLB fans in America is something like 55, so maybe sticking to what used to work for years isn’t the best plan for the future of the game.

Don Baylor breaking his leg was disgusting – looked like he put his shin bone on backward

HC, that’s what I said about the new Commish trying to implement new rules that I think are stupid, like the new “Chase Utley” rule about sliding, catchers blocking the plate can’t get plowed over anymore, etc. You gonna go down to the streets of whatever 3rd world country where the kids are in the streets playing with a broomstick and bottle cap and milk cartons on their hands and tell them they can’t play aggressive on the bases?

There’s no problem with guys playing with emotion – it’s when they act like Ric Flair walking down the aisle to the ring is when it’s a problem, and even the guys from the other countries don’t like that sh*t b/c they feel they’re getting shown up for no reason

If anybody thinks Stephen Ross is going to miss out on the money he makes from a preseason game, they’re crazy. Not to mention, he’d have to refund the ticket money to every single season ticket holder. Like CCC said, the stadium will be ready barring some catastrophe.

I believe UM was in talks with FIU about possibly using their stadium in case of emergency but with 40,000 season ticket holders for UM football, there’s not nearly enough seats at FIU. It’s absolutely ridiculous how cheap the previous administration was with the football program. EVERY team in the ACC uses an indoor practice facility except Miami. How, in a city where it rains and lightnings every day for the majority of summer and fall, did they never build an indoor facility. The NCAA already limits the number of practices allowed. The NCAA says you have to bring your players indoors for at least 30 minutes after a lightning alarm goes off. Imagine having 1/3 of those practices cut short or interrupted by lightning? No wonder they’ve sucked for so long! They can’t practice!

Both should be open and shut cases for big time sanctions and lots of admonishment. Both parties don’t go hard on either and give it the we ain’t f’ing around / front page treatment and you know the thing is a bigger fraud than ever.

They dropped the ball on Penn State lightening the restrictions the last year, and what they did with us despite a lack of real serious wrongdoing was a joke. And how UNC hasn’t had the hammer dropped on them laughable (decades of academic fraud seem pretty simple to me).

They weren’t exactly a bunch of All-Stars, they were a team with some grittiness to it and played like it. From ’96 – ’99, they had less than double digit players make the All-Star game in that span and the ones that did make it, three of them made it for the first time while the others had made it multiple times with other teams

These Canes are similar – they also are pretty good out in the field, errors have killed this team for yearrssss. When you help the other team out by putting them on base or helping them advance a base – you’re killin yourself

I had to pay a boat load of money in fines and attend BS drug counselling classes with a bunch of junkies when I got back to Florida. All on some weed.

On the NBA note. I’m still #teampetty and want LeBron to go down in a burning wreck but how come nobody hates on Curry when he lays a dud? Walk off … that Top of the 9th was beyond enormous for confidence, bases full like that and to get out of it

Good and bad things – the “Mark Light Magic” seems to happen in the later innings, esp the 9th, while it happes and they win, that’s great .. but what’s kinda bothersome is that it happens honestly. It shows that they can come back to win, but damn, probably save a lot of high blood pressure situations by not being in that predictament in the the first place

I always thought the wiser move would have been professional boxing. A guy with his power would have had at least a “puncher’s chance” against some of the tougher heavyweights. His total lack of wrestling experience was easily exposed against MMA vets. Would have loved to see him stand in the ring and bang with some heavy weights. No worrying about takedown defense or getting choked, just stand and throw punches.

Guys that muscular tend to get tired fast. All that muscle requires a lot of oxygen. Plus the age factor and the fact that he never really trained until his late 30’s and you’ve got a fighter not built for long bouts. Still, most heavyweight boxers aren’t in great cardio shape anyway so it wouldn’t matter as much in a stand up fight.

Bennie, can’t agree with you more on the Louisville stuff. Kind of up in the air in regards to the Canes victory lap. If it was a walk off, I have no problem with it. My point being is that when he hit the home run, BC was devastated. When he started hot dogging on the way home, to me it was the equivalent of kicking a sleeping dog. I have no problem with the bat flip, just having fun. But baseball is a funny game compared to football and basketball in that there is no timetable and it was only the 7th inning.

    Bennie’s right about BC.

Kid hits a huge dinger which puts us in a huge lead, and the BC catcher yells “F Y” and starts walking towards our group towards the end of his trot, all EM did was gesture towards him in response as he nears home plate.

    The bat flip was nothing.

In return, their bench sprints to to our bench, led by one of their pu$$y coaches who was trying to fight people.

Now we’re supposed to act like choir girls?

Cubed, if that is in fact what the catcher did than yes, all bets are off. Chances are the catcher wasn’t saying FU due to the home run or the bat flip. My guess is that it was the dance routine. If the FU came before the dance routine than OK.

It honestly looked like the BC catcher spit at Edgar if you watch the many replays of it

F*ck BC, esp after them emptying their dugout and one of their assistants leading the charge

What’s funny is seeing tiny ass #11 for them running toward everyone else that is about 5 inches taller and all of them have at least a good 20 lbs on him. It was one of those “you better restrain me” moments by him and luckily one of his teammates grabbed him b/c he was about to get dropped

Full count, bases juiced and Edgar hits a moonshot. Kid has a rep for flair, can’t expect him to not celebrate. Did he started jumping up and down 30 feet from home plate in front of the catcher? Yea, but, who knows what was said prior to that during the entire series between that catcher and any of the Canes hitters, esp that at-bat by Edgar. It’s not like BC wasn’t talking sh*t during the series either, esp the way their #1 pitcher was acting in Game 1 with his Mr. T starter kit chains hanging out of his jersey while on the mound

If BC wanted to retaliate, then they should’ve planted a two-seamer into one of the Canes batters after it b/c yea, it called for it by the unwritten rules. They had their chance, they didn’t take it and they didn’t come back to win

Best is seeing the Boston papers and WEEI sports radio calling the Canes classless. Go f*ck yourself Boston in every way possible. You’re telling me that those two pieces of sh*t David Ortiz or Manny Ramirez never pimped it after a home run or walk off? What about that f*ck Johnathan Papelbon after he closed a game?

Canes baseball getting absolutely cornholed by some fine plate umpiring. Never seen strikes called when they’re in the opposite batter box, even worse is the announcers saying the batter went down looking.

Of course he did, numbnuts. They aren’t coached to swing at obviously bad pitches.

  277. avatar

    Six

    June 18, 2016

Some of those pitches you can’t just let go by with two strikes, too close to take – go down swinging, the umpire isn’t changing his strikezone mid-game, if you’re trying to win a battle of wills with that guy, you’ve already lost thinking he’s going to change

Can’t leave that many RISP out there and expect to win

Also real hard to force yourself to swing at shit you’ve been coached to not even look at since little league..

From what I was seeing, esp when they were showing the camera on the ump, the Arizona pitcher was hitting his spots, mixing it up with his high 80s fastball and curve, pitching away from the hitters – gotta give that kid credit, even the Canes players and Morris said he did a great job of mixing it up, keeping them off balance

Sh*t just wasn’t working for the Canes yesterday. Mediavilla couldn’t find his control and they got behind 3 runs in the 1st, Arizona then could be a lot more patient at the plate b/c their starter was cruising and spotted him a 3 run lead, they saw that the Canes were sucking at getting RISP in and how many of the lead off hitters each inning for the Canes were even getting on base?

They need to address their pitching depth as well – in college baseball, you don’t have depth, you’re f*cked, esp if your starter or #1 guy struggles. Need more than just a set up guy to your closer and your closer

I heard a majority of the interview today. He went in on Folden pretty hard. Said that the coaches wouldn’t allow Stephen Morris to get an MRI after hurting his ankle a few years back. Now, Feliciano said it turned out Morris had torn his achilles but I find that hard to believe since most people can’t even walk on a torn achilles, let alone play football.

He also said that Ryan Williams was healthy and cleared to play but they went with Kaaya so they could use the “freshman QB” excuse when they lost. Once again, not really sure how true this is. Maybe Williams was healthy but I doubt he would have played better than Kaaya did after the initial Louisville loss.

Most of the other stuff he mentioned is already public knowledge. Al forced Chickillo to gain 60 pounds, Al wouldn’t let the assistants alter his schemes or game plans. Feliciano actually stuck up for some of the assistants. Coley, Kehoe and Larry Scott. He said they were all handcuffed. If any of the players suggested changing anything, they were immediately blown off.

Big O pressed him about Al being in over his head and he said that Golden wasn’t unqualified, he was just too stubborn and tried to force his system even though it was failing on the field. His lack of flexibility and humility are what killed his tenure.

It’s Miami. Anyone can rent a Bentley. From what I’ve heard, the car(s) in question were not leased or financed, they are rentals. I can blow up instagram with photos of me in a Lambo and it’ll only cost me a few hundred bucks.

Personally I don’t see this guy Young getting much PT anyway. Once these 3 freshman take the field he be back on 2nd or 3rd string.

I actually thought JYoung and Bathsalts Johnson were 2 of the better finds by the burnt out staff… Young was really built to be a MLB.

He also wasn’t exposed to the stank long enough to be of little use, Diaz couldve probably done something with him.

Assuming he doesn’t get el boot. I’d certainly be less sore if it was him and not AQM..

Este LOL I said the same thing! Cutting it CLOSE!!!

First time in a long time that there is some real buzz surrounding this team.

Of course we have some holes to be filled (that’s what she said…) but every team has holes.

I think we have a nice corp group and with the right coaching, we can make some noise.

Also loving the new look of the stadium. Those giant screens are a life saver. Can’t wait to get down.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

    From the Herald:
“One other note: According to an 18-page Florida Bar document that I obtained over the weekend, The Florida Bar has recommended a 91-day suspension for Maria Elena Perez, Nevin Shapiro’s lawyer. The Bar says Perez, 44, violated ethics standards, largely for her conduct during UM’s NCAA investigation into UM.

“I recommend that Respondent be found guilty of misconduct justifying disciplinary measures,” the bar said in the document.

The NCAA says it erred by paying her $18,000 to help set up NCAA interviews with people who would implicate UM.

The Florida Bar filing asserted that Perez is guilty of violating eight ethical rules including lack of candor, failure to disclose key facts and making false statements. Besides the suspension from practicing law, the Bar filing recommends that Perez pay more than $4,000 in costs of the investigation.”

So delayed, but so glad that some justice was sent her way. Worst UM grad attorney evah!
