Bowl Eligibility on the Line

thumbnail_20160910_160324

After the early part of the season there probably wasn’t too many fans who would have thought that at the 10th game of the season The Miami Hurricanes would be fighting for bowl eligibility.  But that is what the Hurricanes are playing for this Saturday afternoon when they take on the University of Virginia on enemy soil.  Gone are the days the Virginia coaching staff would be looking forward to a Miami victory to save their jobs.  There is a new sheriff in town and if the Hurricanes who showed up last week against Pitt show up again this week it will be a long afternoon for Virginia.

Virginia, like Miami has had an up and down season.  They have two victories but have played some tough opponents extremely well.  Particularly taking a very strong Louisville team don to the wire.  Let’s look at who will have to perform well for Virginia for them to take the W away from Miami.

QB – Kurt Benkert   Kurt has thrown for an average of 254 yards per game with 19 touchdowns.  He has also thrown 11 interceptions with a completion percentage of about 58%.Image result for kirt benkert

RB’s  Taquan Mizzell & Albert Reid  Virginia doesn’t have a specific go to back.  These two have combined for just over 1,000 yards on the season and 10 touchdowns.  Taquan also leads the team with 42 receptions.                                                                                     Image result for taquan mizzell uva

Receiving –  Keeon Johnson & Olamide Zaccheaus  Again, no clear cut leader in this category.   Virginia’s two receivers have combined for about 80 catches and 800 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Defense

Image result for micah kiser

On the defense there is a definitive leader in Micah Kiser.  Micah leads the team with over 100 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Through in 4 forced fumbles and you have a player that must be accounted for.  Another leader on the defensive side is Quin Blanding.  Quin, a 5 star prospect out of Virginia, has not disappointed the Virginia faithful.  Playing in the defensive backfield the junior has 90 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Image result for quin blanding

Usually I do not mention special teams too much and I should.  I want to point out that Virginia has only kicked 3 field goals over the course of the season.  So just because Miami holds on 3rd down in the red zone does not mean a field goal will be attempted.

Game time is set for 2:00 on the ACC network.  I know a lot of people had trouble pulling the game in last weekend due to a local blackout but this should not be the case with an away game.

Go Canes!

BG I didn’t know u were heading to this game…I would’ve made the ride down.

    Have fun my dude.

Great day to build on last week and start gathering momentum and learning how to win on the road.

This will be a battle like it always is.

We play our game and bring the offensive template from last week and we win. We revert back to what we have done earlier this season and its a toss up.

    Its that simple.

The last thing we need is to come out sleep walking and fall behind.

We will see what team shows up…the dawgs or the dawg piss.

Finish strong here and get ready for next week.

It’s good to play a bad team after a nice win. Helps get that momentum going. NC State’s not great, but they will beat us if we play sloppy. Their defense is competitive and they have a good RB. We should definitely beat them though. Need this win.

    Totally agree Este…

Absolutely no reason not to win out from here.

It will set up a solid bowl game, added practices for all of our youth and momentum going into the off-season for recruiting

    We MUST finish strong.

    I don’t mind 12s game at all.

Kid is not afraid to mix it up. Get him some training and added strength and he could be a totally different dude next yr and beyond.

All of these youngins are veterans now, so there will be a bunch of dogs on D next yr.

They will also benefit from the additional bowl practices as well.

Need some OL to step up or a juco or two and a qb and we are good on O.

That LSU hire is a disaster. Their athletic admin are straight dog doo.

Easy and cheap way out and we all know how that ends.

This is the beginning of a tough road for LSU.

    Prayers sent.

Can’t believe this is our last regular season game. Wtf happened to this season?!?!?

Hoping for a good bowl with a great location, so I can head down for one last one.

Gonna be an interesting offseason, ugh I can’t stand the offseason, but we need a W today and and finish up strong and recruiting will take care of itself.

This program has to learn how to win again and hate to lose, emphasis on hating to lose.

Hoping we roll this lil bytch cvntcliff, good coach but I hate his whiney face and want to bash it in.

We still need to figure out our offensive identity.

We play a team with a pulse and the offense gets shut down. Its a huge problem…

This Duke defense was playing third stringers and was not good at all.

Teams with equal or better talent and well coached, will continue to beat us if we don’t get our shyt straight on O.

Hurri I am with ya…gotta win this bowl game no matter what.

Nash lol I called that Tenn loss. The team has packed it up on Bytch Jones and that creepy looking hairless qb.

I also picked Mich State for the upset and that didn’t go over so well. They really do stink.

UF has a worse OL now than we did early in the season. It was tough to watch.

Frenchy got knocked the fug out again and that dude just keeps on going. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Dude has a Homer Simpson skull.

    Nash I absolutely agree.

When your qbs lack of mobility is a problem, you have tonrunna more complicated offense.

I have watched Pitt a few times this yr and they run exactly what we should be running offensively and do so many cool things in order to me on the defense thinking and hide their deficiencies and lack of talent.

We do non of that and why we still get beat by good teams regularly.

No shifts, no motions no jump tos, no misdirecting…nothing.

When in was watching UF on offense it gave me flashbacks of exactly how we looked most games against good opponents, for half the game.

    So frustrating.

U have to be creative on offense these days or you will get eaten up and lose most of the time.

Hopefully the Rev figures something out because I think we are stuck with KIA for another yr.

C1, our O with BK should look like Wisky, Michigan, or bama pre Hurts with all the stuff you mentioned above. Brad is predicted to be drafted in the top 3 rounds so I’ll happily take him back next year. Honestly I thought we’d see they type stuff Richt ran with Stafford, David Green, and Arron Murray. Lol I guess him adding rpo’s and zone read stuff was him “evolving” Lol

  41. avatar

    Canez1

    November 27, 2016

Nash, the problem with KIA is he is absolutely no threat of running the ball. Every qb I see on a good team can at least scramble to get out of trouble and get you a few yds when needed and is at least a threat to stumble forward when the time comes.

We will always be terrible on third downs against good teams with him behind the wheel and struggle when we play teams with equal or greater talent.

That is why you have to get creative with formations and play calling.

Michigan has no playmakers on offense but a capable qb and a good WR and look how far that has gotten them.

OSU…meh on offense but have a dynamic qb that takes them to another level.

I just don’t see a future with Kayaa and that type of qb, the way defenses are run these days.

You don’t need a Lamar Jackson back there, just an athlete.

You have a sitting duck back there and you are dead against good teams.

Those guys you mentioned could all get yds when needed with their legs and the game has changed so much from when they were playing, even though it wasn’t too long ago.

Gotta have someone who can get out of trouble and move the chains at qb.

Or have Bama’s OL to keep him clean.

I have seen enough and ready to move on regardless of what the NFL thinks. They are wrong WAY more than they are right and it’s a totally different set up than the college game.

I wouldn’t want Kayaa anywhere near my team in the NFL.
