Let’s Go Bowling!

Delray and family

Are you a bit more excited at the end of this regular season than perhaps the past few?  Probably due to the team finishing strong on a four game win streak as opposed to limping to the finish line as we have done in the past.  With that being said, let’s turn our attention to the possible bowl games as well as the opponents that our beloved Hurricanes may face.

Taxslayer Bowl – Jacksonville, Fl.  December 31, 2016  11:00 am

Image result for taxslayer bowl

There has been more than a whisper that Miami  may travel up route 95 and play in this bowl.  This game for Miami would help in recruiting and also I would expect to see a large amount of Canes fans making the trip.  I love the start time!  Wake up, grab a little…um breakfast.  Pop open a beer and watch the Canes destroy whoever they are pitted against.  Now, the who they will be pitted against is a question that opens a can of worms.  The hated team from Gainesville has come up by numerous sources as a possible matchup.   This would be a great matchup for both teams and I believe both teams would love to see it happen.  Unfortunately, this matchup has been brought up in past bowl scenarios and it just hasn’t worked out.  We’ll see what happens next Sunday night.  Other possibilities include Arkansas, Kentucky or an opponent that I believe a lot of people would like to see, the Georgia Bulldogs.  Tennessee did play in this game last year so I do not see them making a return trip

Belk Bowl – Charlotte, NC.  December 29, 2016  5:30 pm
Image result for Belk Bowl bowl
Another Bowl the Canes have their eyes on is the Belk Bowl.  Again, I like the date and timing of the game.  Head out of work early, hit happy hour at my favorite cigar bar and enjoy the game with some Canes Alumni and a few former players.  Should Miami make it to The Belk Bowl the matchup would probably be between one of three teams,  Georgia, Kentucky or South Carolina.  Although the latter could be a long shot it would be a matchup the Canes should be heavily favored in and should win easily.  Look for the Belk Bowl to pass on Miami.  Just my opinion that they will try to get UNC in as it will sell more tickets being the home town team.
Pinstripe Bowl – New York, NY. December 28, 2:00 pm
Image result for Pinstripe bowl
This may be one of the more intriguing games as, well, let’s face it, it’s New York.  New York is home to a very high population of Cane Alumni who will no doubt flock to see their team play locally.  So I may have to ditch work a bit early that day but not a big deal.  Two teams come to mind for this game from the big 10.  Minnesota, a team that finished with an identical record as Miami at 8-4 or Maryland that struggled at times but did win the season finale against Rutgers to finish bowl eligible.
No doubt who the Canes next opponent is or where they play.  I believe we have not felt this level of confidence in a while.  It feels good and is something I believe this staff will build upon.
Go Canes!

I know these cfb rankings only mean but so much. But didn’t the Canes molly wop pitt a few weeks ago but they get the #25 ranking. And ut being still ranked in the top 25 after going 2-2 down the stretch losing to 2 6-6 teams and giving up 1200 yards in those games is a J O K E!

We don’t need all world, just an accurate, tough kid with some fight in him, that can get yards with his feet when needed.

That gets you to the ACC championship, a game changer at QB gets you to the playoffs.

    It’s that simple.

Too many times this yr, we swap qbs and we get the W. Sick of saying that year after year.

This news made my off season.

I was afraid we were going to endure the half a game boy wonder for another season.

Watching these young killer qbs all over the country and wondering what if. Very few times do any qbs have a clean pocket to throw from, it they feel the pressure and get the fug out of dodge and make a play or throw the ball away.

Gamers at qb all of the place today…so jealous.

Malik Rosier is undefeated as a starter in college and was against a ranked team on the road. We good. And someone can somehow beat him out then all the better.

Also, we need to move Langham to TE already. He might have a chance to turn into something there.

  51. avatar

    January 3, 2017

Lol yes it was my man.

We are good and a great qb competition will do wonders for this team.

I think it will end up being an Allison v. Perry battle.

The OL will look completely different with an athlete behind center. They weren’t great but they were put in a really tough spot, trying to protect a statue.

Watched a ton of football this bowl season and against good teams, your pocket is never pretty, regardless of OL strength. Good teams are built around there front 7 and those guys get after it. A qb these days must be able to escape pressure and make plays on the run, in order to extend drives.

All teams playing in top bowls had athletic qbs.

It was time for this program to move forward.

    Pretty excited.

Este I think we are going to see a lot of kids moving to other positions or leaving. It will be an interesting off season and we will see how we finish up recruiting.

C1 every part of me wants to see what Homer looks like a corner foe real…The top 3-4 teams in the coastal loses their qb (with signs pointing to Unc’s qb jettin too). So breaking in a new qb won’t be any teams excuse. Maybe Gus sticks it out and Grey finally “puts it all together”??? On the suface I’m concerned about the cb spots but with the front 7 crushing qbs clavicles db’s should eat well!!!

  56. avatar

    Esteban

    January 3, 2017

Yearby was hurt, put up 1k, and was looking like he could put up good yards this year til things fell apart. He’s just too slow for his size. Can’t see him being drafted. I could see him sticking, though. He has good vision, is quick thru the hole, can pass block and is a good receiver.

I want to see Redwine tried out at Safety. I think he’s fine at CB, but don’t see his ceiling being real high there. I think he could be a good safety with his physicality and speed if he shows any instincts for it.

At CB I like what we got returning, but would like to see at least 1 guy who’s going to push guys brought in via recruiting or graduate transfer. Young really got better game by game. Mayes and Jackson had their moments and if Redwine sticks at CB he’s likely going to only improve – need to work on his technique and speed for CB – plenty of speed for safety tho.

All around I like the talent on defense. Golden recruited good players on defense but tried to bulk them up and make them fit a system that didn’t play to their strengths. If he would have just fired his buddy a couple of years ago he’d still be the coach.

  57. avatar

    Canez1

    January 3, 2017

Nash I think he could play multiple spots and you never know…

The kid McFarland coming in might be the truth…

Great point about other teams in the ACC. Only worries are UNC and Vatech on our side and we match up well with them and should best them regularly from here on out.

We will definitely miss Corn but not worried about our d backfield or our D in general.

Safety will be on lock and these young kids have played a ton.

I think we bring in some juco and transfer kids to fill in gaps.

The kid from UT was a big surprise wasn’t he!?!

Our biggest loss is Njoku…I was really hoping we would get lucky and he stayed but kid is going to test out of the gym and probably find himself in the first round. His production alone warrants it.

We will now be able to sprinkle in freshman throughout the year and get them ready for the future.

That is a must in order to build a sustainable program.

Not sure what happened with Gray but I doubt he finds a home here, just never utilized properly.

Our OL line will play much better, I guarantee it.

    January 4, 2017

I have no clue what to do with Gray. If he has his speed back after the injury then he could be a weapon in one way or another. Not sure if he’ll ever have good vision though. Could be a guy who plays as a 3rd down back/returner. I’d hope he leans up a little. If he doesn’t then he’s even an H-Back option.

the OL is where I’m hoping for Brown or whatever his name to be able to help and hoping my Central Rocket recruit can do something. LT is such a big hole still. I like Darling at RG to replace #63 and Gauthier I kinda liked at LG. If he improves he can be the starter and I’ll be fine, at the least he’s a nice rotation guy. I feel Sonny looked better before the injury and St. Louis is all arms still and not much technique. But that’s what the off season is for. He’s got some nice athletic ability.

Leave the Pro-Style QB recruits on the ESPN 300/Rivals/Scout sites and recruit the Dual Threats instead. Unless you have that ’93 Cowboys OL in front of them, they’re gonna be a liability when needing to get the 9 feet or 12 feet needed on a 2nd/3rd Down and 3 or 4 with their legs when sh*t breaks down, which it will

Rosier, Perry and Allison better be the only 3 with legit chances to take the position – and not necessarily in that order. Testaverde is Matt Perrelli reincarnated, he’s lucky he has that last name b/c I wouldn’t let him near the program if I was coach. Would rather have DJ Dallas as a emergency QB than him

  64. avatar

    Esteban

    January 5, 2017

I went back and looked at Allison’s footage – I had never looked at it but remembering I liked how he looked in the all star game. I really like seeing a high school QB who was facing good competition. Having to make contested throws or throws into windows against a zone show way more of a players skill than just throwing it far to a go with no one within 5-10 yards of him. Also, having to deal with an actual pass rush instead of standing flat footed for a few seconds waiting for your receiver to become wide open it is a big plus.

Yeah I’m comfortable with the options available. Let the cream rise to the top.

Six, the only thing would be how dedicated he would be to learning how to block. But I’d hope he’d be motivated by potentially actually playing.

What the game show me the other night is that the front 4 or front 7 on d can cover up an average to below secondary. They dudes on the back end for Clemson were very shaky but their front made the difference. Bama’s depth along the front was down compared to previous years. 10, 94,29, 26, 2, 32, 22, 56 hardly came off the field and it showed in plays 80-100. They were gassed! Boulware at lb for Clemson in a G and was diagnosing plays before bama ran them on a few occasions. Game change for bama on O when they couldn’t just turn around and hand off to 9. I thought he was overrated early in the season then he started producing 50 yard td runs one after another.

    Good points Nash.

We dont have a Boulware type yet on D. Hoping one of our young lbs turn into that type of animal, all elite teams have.

Bama has a few of them and they make the entire D run.

You need a couple savages on each side of the ball and one at qb is a must.

Watson took his team on his back and got it done and that was the difference in this game.

We are short on the savage list and it shows.

A semi-athletic qb will go a long way, sustain more drives and eliminate a lot of the missing quarters and halves that our offense decided to take off.

There are very few clean pockets anymore in CFB, gotta be able to evade and pick up a few yds or evade and throw the ball away.

    Negative plays are drive killers.

Call me a grandpa, but I don’t want us to need a dual-threat QB to succeed. Rather I would like a pro-style kid who can move when needed.

Think Aaron Rodgers level athleticism. A guy like Morris is actually a decent example. Just someone who is fast enough to be able to outrun most DL and then be a threat to run for a first down if you go conservative. Until the NFL changes style, that is what will get guys in the league.

And speaking on dual-threat QB’s I actually think dog shiz OL play and 7 on 7 is part of reason these guys even have a place in today’s game.

Agree with you on the dual threat QBs and relying too heavily on them. A lot of these dual threat qbs end up being busts in the NFL because they can’t read defenses and aren’t great throwers. An Aaron Rodgers type of qb would definitely be ideal. I think Cade Weldon fits that role.

Shwarm, I am totally with you there but honestly I could give a fug what anyone does in the NFL.

Gotta have an athlete at QB, end of story.

Looks like we will get our wish one way or another.

Recruiting looks to have some twists and turns coming…love this time of year but also hate it.

Also very few solid OL or DTs come out of SoFla for some reason and I think you are on to something. Gotta win in order to get OOS studs on the line or have dynamic coaches that overcome that and actually develop. Coach K seems to be that dude for our DL. We will see what Searles brings to the OL.

I truly believe that an athletic QB is going to automatically boost our OL play and also open up our run game.

Heading to Grand Velas in Riviera Maya this Friday on a work trip. Any thoughts on the place???

I’d like a Dual-Threat QB in the sense that he can stay in the pocket ala Pro-Style but also has some damn wheels to take off and get you the 6 or 9 feet needed when that pocket collapses. Everyone would like an Aaron Rodgers – the guy is basically Neo from The Matrix right now, on a whole ‘another plane of existence .. his OL is blocking pretty decently for him as well, not that he even really needs it b/c he’s surgical as hell in picking apart any defense the past 8 games

A QB that can extend the play or is a threat to pick up some yards on his own, one more thing to worry about for the defenses, esp. if the playcalling is dogsh*t (like we saw too much this past year) and the defense shuts down the running game

Hell, even Craig Krenzel’s geriatric ass was able to pick up 88 yards rushing with 2 TDs in the 2003 NChamp game

Kaaya picked up -386 yards rushing in 3 years

Only 5 times in 3 years that he had positive yards rushing in a game

Yea, he’s a pocket passer and not looking to run, but damn

Lol I need something new from the qb position…

We don’t need all world, just an accurate, tough kid with some fight in him, that can get yards with his feet when needed.

That gets you to the ACC championship, a game changer at QB gets you to the playoffs.

    It’s that simple.

Too many times this yr, we swap qbs and we get the W. Sick of saying that year after year.

I’m not going to make this bowl because my work and travel schedule in Jan is going to be ridiculous.

I really wanted to get down there one last time.

    Sucks… and winter is coming!!

I don’t care if they are dual threat or whatever. Just be a good enough athlete to buy time and to get yards when keeping on a the read option. Blake Bortles isn’t being confused for Mike Vick, but he did good when keeping off the read option and he’s 6’5, 240 or whatever it is. Just have to keep the defense honest and be able to run for your life as needed.

And OG and DT prospects come out of South Florida all the time. The DTs just tend to be on the small side but they end up good still. And the OL prospects are there just need to coach them up the same way we would from anywhere else. Denver Kirkland was sitting there getting his offer pulled and was all sec pretty much from day 1.

a year like this I like FSU early. It looks like the one game I clearly wouldn’t have us favored going into. If its a win then it’s something that can spring board us. If its a loss we get it out of the way relatively early.

    Whats good Canes fam!

Not going to lie I had a huge FSU hangover this year.

I totally cashed out after we lost for the 7th fuggin time in a row!

I do like how we closed out the season and I have the utmost confidence in coach Richt and crew.

Diaz surprised the hell out of me. He sure did talk a good game all offseason; but man did he live up to his word. Aggressive & attacking are understatements.

The improvements made to that unit, under the circumstances, were nothing short of phenomenal.

Proud of this staff, outside of Coach Searels, iffy about that guy..

Ya Buddy, totally agreee on all of the above.

I think the OL were put at a huge disadvantage due to playcalling and the stiff we had at QB but we will see how they bounce back and can judge Searles from there.

That FSU game was a heartbreaker, no doubt about it.

The atmosphere at that game was the best I have seen since the OB.

We were impressed and the place was electric.

The difference in that game was at the QB postion. They have a tough as nails gamer and we had a kid that disappears for halves at a time when the lights are brightest.

Same song and dance for the past three years…

    No other way around it.

Loooooong offseason now and the depression starts.
