Coach Profiles: Rick Petri

Rick Petri – who has a history of developing some of the best defensive linemen in college football, including former `Cane greats Warren Sapp, Kevin Patrick, Kenny Holmes, and Kenard Lang - returns as defensive line coach at the University of Miami for the 2010 season.

A veteran coach with 29 years of experience as a defensive line coach with stops at Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, Miami, South Carolina and Kentucky, Petri inherits a unit that returns 11 players with significant playing experience, including first team All-ACC performer Allen Bailey.

Petri spent the last five seasons as the defensive line coach at Kentucky, where he quickly turned the Wildcats’ line into one of the best in the Southeastern Conference. This past season, defensive tackle Corey Peters was named first-team Coaches All-SEC. In 2008, Petri was named a finalist for the national Defensive Line Coach of the Year award by FootballScoop.com, when he guided current NFL stars Myron Pryor and Jeremy Jarmon to All-SEC honors.

Petri went to Kentucky from Ole Miss, where he coached the defensive tackles for six seasons. He joined the Rebel staff in December 1998 in time to help coach the team in the Independence Bowl. The Rebels were bowl-eligible for the next five seasons and played in four more bowl games, capped by a 10-3 record and Cotton Bowl victory in the 2003 season. Two of Petri’s tackles, Kendrick Clancy and Jesse Mitchell, earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. Clancy was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft and has been in the league for nine seasons. Petri also mentored defensive tackle Kelvin Pritchett, a first-round NFL draft pick, who has enjoyed a 14-year career with the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Before Ole Miss, Petri took over defensive-end responsibilities at South Carolina from 1996-98. He developed John Abraham, a first-round pick by the New York Jets who spent five years with that club.

Petri coached with the Miami Hurricanes from 1993-95. He coached consensus All-American and Lombardi Award-winning lineman Sapp and helped guide the 1994 Hurricane defense which led the nation in scoring defense and total defense. In addition, Petri coached Patrick to All-America honors and Lang to Big East Rookie of the Year honors.

During his first stop in Coral Gables, Petri coached three future NFL first-round draft choices –Sapp (Tampa Bay, 1995), Lang (Washington, 1997), and Holmes (Houston, 1997). Sapp, of course, was a multi-year Pro Bowl selection and was the 1999 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Lang was a nine-year NFL vet with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins. Holmes played several seasons in the league with Tennessee and the New York Giants.

Before Miami, he also coached the defensive tackles at Louisiana Tech in 1992, and coached the defensive line at Ole Miss from 1989-1991. He went to Arkansas State in 1979, where he worked as a part-time coach with the offensive line. He was elevated to full-time assistant in 1980 and coached the defensive line until 1988.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Petri graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Pittsburg State in 1977-78.

Petri and his wife, Marsha, have two sons, Brad and Kory.

    just playing of course.

Este, haha! He’s already appeared on the Countdown, but U know that.

Micanor, I expect, will play a huge role on the defense. I like him, and I expect him to play well this season. As does Mary.

    Old Fart,

You’ll be interested in this story.

Petri stopped by our restaurant in Oxford (Muddy Water Grill), and I actually served him and another Ole Miss defensive coach a couple of drinks. They both (I’m not sure who the other coach was) talked to me at the bar and discussed some ball.

I remember Petri payed for the both’em, and they were super nice to me and took the the time to chat.

Mel Kiper was a patron. (he’s like 5’5, or 5’6)

Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman even came by on a Wednesday, during the summer. Like I said before, business was slow during the summer. They just wandered in, and a server came and alerted Randy that they walked in. (I wasn’t there, curse the day) Randy didn’t believe her, and he walked out onto the floor to discover, yes, in fact, Clint and Morgan were in our establishment. Randy waited their table, and they both ordered sweet teas and three-piece catfish dinners.

Their order totaled about 25 dollars, and they left a ten-dollar tip. (which we gave to the waitress who alerted Randy). Freeman then offered Randy a thousand bucks for our B&W’s (photos of Blues and Jazz performers from various music festivals from around the Delta). Freeman also owns his own Juke Joint, just 60 miles south of the Muddy. Randy refused, and we later sold those photos for twice that amount.

    My last good Oxford story.

Our restaurant was next to John Grisham’s office. We expanded (into the next available space in a strip-mall) to include a live-music venue.

I can’t tell you how many times (John Grisham’s secretary) she complained on us to the Oxford Police about our noise…

But, one day, they were moving his office. They had a HUGE moving van in front of our parking, on a football home game weekend. The lack of parking was costing us lunch business. Randy went over to the office and raised a big stink, and they eventually moved the van, allowing us our parking. But that Secretary was a b!tch!

I’m a huge fan of Grisham. But that was wack. That secretary hated us…

    from the herald

    • UM people said these June freshmen arrivals have impressed in on-field work: Brandon Linder (will push junior center Tyler Horn); cornerback Devont’a Davis (Vaughn Telemaque expects him to play in 2010); tight ends Clive Walford, 6-4, and Asante Cleveland, 6-5 (“they know how to use height to their advantage” as receivers, Telemaque said); and running back Eduardo Clements (“shifty, quick dude,” Damien Berry said).

    • One competition UM people are eager to see is Thearon Collier against Kendal Thompkins for playing time as the primary slot receiver. “Thompkins has a knack [to get to] the end zone,” Telemaque said.

LaRon Byrd said UM players “have been there to support” Collier, who disclosed on Facebook in May that his son passed away. Collier’s family has endured incredible pain — his father was murdered before Collier was born. “It’s a tragedy losing a newborn, and it shows how strong he is that he’s been out here” practicing, Byrd said.

Getting petri on board with that much experience, when a guy has 29 years of coaching experience, if a list was put up under petri for prominent players coached, it would make the blog look longer. Bringing him in will definitely raise the level of play for our entire team, let alone just the defense. 1st, our defense will began looking like a real defense, next our offensive line will continue to get better going up against alot of potential 1st round draft picks on our d-line.

Now i’m looking for what the secondary does, i’m not going to give credit to mcgriff for brandon harris, cause he’s got enuff talent to go anywhere and ball, it’ll be the other guys, the nickel db’s and the young guns is where mcgriff will earn his stripes. barrow as the linebackers coach, we’ll see how they do this year.

micanor regis, i actually picked him as a true freshmean to be LOF. Something about that guy and his work ethic that always impressed me, he just like bradon harrris just had to get their weight up and they will definitely start playing just like the did when they were in highschool, just straight up dominating. As well alot of other guys, going into their junior years is where alot of these guys began to reach their pick!

  10. avatar Calvin says:

Caniak, i was just talking about eduardo clements yesterday, alot of people really don’t know how good that man is from a physical standpoint, add to that his mentality out their is that of a champion all day. He showed how good he was as a sophmore in highschool, when you got brandon harris, davon johnson and collier on the same field and you still seem like you’re one of the best player out their on that field, that showed me alot, that Booker T. offense was all about eduardo. I expect him to do nothiing less while at UM, if he’s kept off the field, i can’t see it because of someone beating him out much, but whoever keeps eduardo on the bench, that’ll let us know how strong our runningbacks are.

Allen Bailey is the only hand that can beat a Royal Flush.

Allen Bailey got his drivers license at the age of 16. Seconds.

Nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole, except for Allen Bailey. Allen Bailey eats black holes. They taste like chicken.

“Brokeback Mountain” is not just a movie. It’s also what Allen Bailey calls the pile of dead ninjas in his front yard.

If you Google search “Allen Bailey getting his ass kicked” you will generate zero results. It just doesn’t happen.

Allen Bailey does not own a stove, oven, or microwave, because revenge is a dish best served cold, especially to Buckeyes

  12. avatar Old FartNC says:

I’m sure Petri is salivating at the depth of talent he gets to work with this year. A little polish and technique and he can add Bailey to his list of 1st rounders, with more to follow. Can he turn Forsten or Regis into a Suh in two years?

  13. avatar JSQ says:

Hey guys, sorry to be MIA, just spending every waking second catching up with my family. I really missed Missouri and I already have my accent back!

Mike, those Bailey quotes are so funny. About to go read them to my mom. She says hi to you and Randy. She is soooooo excited for the FSWho game. Yesterday I was showing her Patrick’s “B!tch I’m from Dade County” shirt and telling her how I wanted to get us matching ones and she didn’t get it so I played the song on my iPhone and pretended I was Marcus Forston or Sean Spence sacking somebody and then yelling at the pile of QB on the field “B!tch I’m From Dade County!!!!” She now thinks the shirt is AWESOME!

I hope y’all are having a great weekend! 39 days until kickoff!!!

  14. avatar Calvin says:

jsq, bringing the passion understanding element to other Cnaes. Now, after sacks, we’ll have to make sure the mic is off around your mom.

Also jsq, that 39 days looks a whole lot better psychologically than if you had let us know it was 40 more days to go the day before. keep it coming.

The mindset our runningbacks have to have is, i’m only going to get limited reps, so i got to make each rep count.

  15. avatar Esteban says:

Calvin, the one knock i got on Clements is that weak Dade County competition. It’s not like he was putting up those stats in Kansas or something.

  16. avatar Calvin says:

It’s going to be fun watching us go against fsu this year. Our receivers against mark stoops db’s greg reid and probably lamarcus joyner. Going to be like the old days, they(fsu) will do something to get us fired up as usual(like show up for the actual game). We got athletes again at the skill position that’ll match-up with anybody in the country on both sides of the ball. Not hyped up players, just a bunch of football players that have grown up now. Just think, it’ll be phillip dorsett vs lamarcus joyner at some point probably, lol.

  17. avatar Calvin says:

Good point esteban, let’s see what he can do against real talent!

  18. avatar CANEZILLA says:

lol esteban..bryce brown wouldnt even start on a dade county team! maybe just maybe a jv team

  19. avatar Hurricane Randy says:

Bryce Brown went down the wrong yellow brick road and realized he wasn’t in Kansas anymore. Tin Man Arthur scurried back down the yellow brick road to Kansas (St) and he couldn’t find a heart for the lion there either.

  20. avatar Doc Ibis says:

There is nothing like a UM fan that is passionate and in-tune to what is/has been going on with this team…

I appreciate and respect all you guys that jumped on me about Ray Ray yesterday and I’m looking forward to him doing his thing in 2010…

From the Miami Herald post, I didn’t expect Devont’a Davis to be the one coming in making a splash because he looked to be 6’1 and about 153 lbs., lol, but if he comes in and balls out, then its all good!!

  21. avatar Esteban says:

Doc, its not jumping on you…It’s being excited about what Ray Ray is gonna do this year. It looked like he was really about to start taking over at safety last year before he got banged up – could see the comfort level increasing with every snap. Him and VT back there should be fun to watch. I’m hoping JoJo comes back full speed and improved in his recognition cause that’s a nice piece to have backing up both safety spots.

and its funny how we were pretty excited about Clements coming in until Storm came along. Came from no where it seemed and looked good in the Army All American game and then good in the spring. All buzz is off Clements and onto Storm now. Clements is definitely different from the rest of the backs we got now since he’s smaller/shiftier. And totally forgotten is Hall.

  22. avatar Calvin says:

doc ibis, we just setting the record straight, sometimes we all might get off tngent, but at the end of the day just know this, the talent that shannon has been bringing in is night and day compared to what has been allowed to come in, in between the years of shannon and butch. More proof that guys get evaulated just because of how they look, look no further than spencer adkins, didn’t even start at UM, but was about the only 1 drafted, why, because he put in the work in the weight room and worked on his body, got noticed and got drafted because he passed the eyeball test. That’s a guy that got drafted just off swasey alone.

  23. avatar Calvin says:

While we got good depth at runningback, we are about 1year away from that position being hell. This year is about them blocking and getting their weigth up, and learning the basics of the position.

  24. avatar Canez1 says:

    Cal and Este great points.

The best part about these back and forths is no matter who ends up being somewhat right it means good things for the team.

Unless we are all wrong and they all end up sucking.

    Good stuff guys.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  25. avatar Hurricane Randy says:

    Doc Ibis,

Having gone to see Kevin and Devont’a play several times this past year and listening to MM01 interview him after the game, it doesn’t surprise me that he would be mentioned as someone who might get some playing time. Actually I think both he and Nelson will see the field in some way this year.

Devont’a is a playmaker. He will stick his head in there and is not afraid to hit. He is exactly the opposite of Nelson in that he is the quiet type and not seeking a lot of attention. But he has all the skills to play at the U and to do it very well. He is always around the ball and is a corner who can catch, therefore resulting in interceptions. He knows what to do with the ball when he gets it. He has a knack for being in the right place at the right time while playing his position. Most teams didn’t throw to his side. He will be very productive at the U and is a great guy as well. The U did well getting him out of Gainesville High and down to Coral Gables.

Both he and Nelson were a great package to get.

  26. Many consider the dbs, lbs, and ols to be the weakest units on the team, BUT what Cal continues to point out is the over all talent Shannon and crew have brought in shuld make those units stronger with compitition….the strenth of our wrs, rb’s, and dls workin against the weaker units oughtta make em betta??? To be more specific DVD workin vs hank/tb3/byrd shud give him the confidence to play vs any wr in the country…same with ben jones/ jermain johnson vs bailey and co…the diff type of backs on the team shuld help our lbs tackling and coverage skills…IMO the overall improvement of the D is the key to the season…if they can hold the opp to 20 pts or less er game??? I’m thinkin 10-2 at worst.

  27. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Cal, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Clements. With his mentality and skills I expect him to do well regardless where he is.

Petri, to me, is the most important difference between 2009 and 2010, exceeded only by the physical and mental maturation of the players and having a second year with the same DC and OC. He knows Hurricane defense starts and stops with the DL and after 29 years, he’s got to be even better than he was when he was showing Sapp the ropes.

I’ve been watching random games….Boisie, Iowa, OSU, Oregon, AZ…..and in general the difference with the western teams is they’re smaller but quicker which explains why they use the spread so much. Also, OSU shouldn’t be nearly as impressed with that win over Oregon as they seem to be. AZ basically had them beat, up by ten in the 4th but Oregon came back and tied it to send it to OT, which was where 21 more points were scored for the eventual Oregon W. AZ was okay, hit and miss on that night. Watching them get stomped by Neb 33-0 was interesting as well, shows what can happen to spread teams when they face a big, strong and disciplined defense.

It was also funny listening to the commentator praise one of AZ’s or Oregon’s WR, who was playing well….kid was 6’1” 175. Now just think about going against that everyday then lining up against a 6’4” 215 WR who’s faster than you.

Man, Hurricane Football is going to take a lot of fools by surprise. But the memories will come flooding back real quick.

  33. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

Max number of games is 14

  34. avatar Calvin says:

nashvilleCane, that’s one of the things about our defense last year under lovett, when you average out points against us, the defense held oppenents to something like 17.3 or something points a game. Remember unc scored 2 toucdowns on defense, clemson scored 2 touchdowns without their offense, 1 on special teams and 1 on defense, only actual wake forest and fsu were about the only 2 teams who actually moved the ball at will against our defense for a little while. The good news about our defense under lovett, they pretty much always played better in the 2nd half, which means, if a team can’t score on us early, lovett is real good at making half time adjustments. Our defense won’t have to rely on a guy like chavez grant who knew the defense inside out but just didn’t have the physical tools to ever be a top notch corner, so him getting left on and island was always interesting.

Now we’ll have guys with a whole lot more physical talent out their, where teams will have to try and figure out which db to pick on, right now the safe bet is dvd, but i’m not so sure that’s a good idea anymore depending on how they want to attack em. if a receiver is physical with him, they’ll have a better chance, but he’s going against physical receivers all day who’ll let em know, if you can battle me all day in practice, you can battle anybody. I can see dvd taking his 3 years of frustrations out on alot of opponents come this year though. Would luv to see him bait a qb to throw an out route and just come up, step in front of it, an blaze down the sideline, cause dvd is one of those players that alot of player luv on this team, so damyum near the whole team will get hyped up if dvd starts doing things like that.

That spring game showed how much speed dvd has on that 1 play alone going after mike james. We almost had a chance to see him get in a foot race with cj spiller on that kick-off return, but he got shoved to the ground on that outside, which was his side to hold up.

Which brings me to another point, we get better special teams coverage, that will also help bring the defensive scoring average down, somewhere to around 12 or 14 points a game against. What alot of people don’t realize, WE, invented beamer ball, not beamer. beamer realized back in the day that it was almost nearly impossible to get points on us with just their offense, so he figured out along time ago, if he could manufacturer points from special teams, that’ll help his team against us, so he began to focus on that part of the game, before they started playing us on a regular basis, never heard of beamer ball.

I do…and I think they’re going to give pryor more to work with this year…open it up for him…now, do they keep conservative because it’s Miami? Maybe. But I think they try to exploit us underneath like wisky (and they should) and then let it rip.

  64. avatar JSQ says:

It’s okay, T, I know several licensed attorneys in Ohio and Canez1 is covering our bail money.

  65. avatar JSQ says:

I think they aren’t giving Miami as much credit as we are. They don’t think of us as a hated rival they think of us as whiney losers. It is only a big game in our mind, not theirs.

  66. avatar Hurriphin says:

On that whole Seantrel bet, Truth got me on a loophole………..But I ain’t no crybaby.

Not sleepin on Randy’s recruiting skills, but if not for those sanctions and all, I’m CERTAIN Henderson rocks Cardinal & Gold. Can’t help but think I got flim-flammed just a little.

  67. avatar The Truth says:

I got family up there…they’re taking it real serious. Maybe not the message board bozos…but the normal people are and it’s going to be a huge deal

  68. avatar The Truth says:

    You definitely got flim flammed…

  69. avatar JSQ says:

I haven’t looked at the message boards. I’ve heard this from the Miami fans up there with Ohio State “friends.”

  70. avatar Canez1 says:

    Trouble…… count me in!!!

I once got arrested in Daytona on Spring break for taking a squirt in public and my boy and I had the best time of the whole vaca in the crazy compound jail they had us in.

    Good times!

I agree that OSU is def not going to take this lightly. They are looking for revenge as well. They have had to put up with all the “They robbed us” yap for the past 8 years.

They are going to be amped and it will Gonna be a tough one.

I’m always down for a good azz whoopin but that is not going to happen.

Some great fall weather and a huge game at the shoe. It doesn’t get any better than that.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  71. avatar Canez1 says:

Oh and JSQ I always have your back GF!

    WE READY!

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  72. avatar Hurriphin says:

All I know is that of they have a TE with 20/20 vision and a least eight fingers, they’re gonna walk us.
Gotta play TOUGH this game. Go to a Big10 blog. They think we are a weak finesse team, who can’t hold up under pressure. Can’t remember if it was Truth or Cal who said it, but we need to set an early tone with Ray-Ray making someone eat his hat, (penalty or not) and Berry dragging Etienne Sabino like a cavewoman. When Pryor breaks contain, C-Mac better belt him as hard as he can, along those sidelines.
This might have to be a game where Coach turns a blind eye to the field, and let’s “Canes be Canes.”

  73. avatar JSQ says:

It’s going to be great, Canez1. Patrick is in now, too so I anticipate shenanagins. I can’t wait!!!!

And y’all need to stop raining on my parade. They aren’t going to see us coming and our boys are going to shut them out at home. Shut them out!!!

You will have to repeat the above phrase before getting any jello shots and/or cupcakes. I don’t nourish Debbie Downers!!!

  74. avatar JSQ says:

Damien Berry dragging a defender like a cavewoman.

That will be a phrase you will see in an upcoming MKF this season. Love it!

  75. avatar Hurriphin says:

Don’t know of I’ve mentioned this to yall, but my brother-in-law is a former walk-on DB for OSU.

    Nuff said……….

  76. avatar Old FartNC says:

Geez, Calvin, I hate to keep bangin’ the D, but:

*Canes led 1st to last in only 2 games LY–(UCF & USF)
*Even FAMU and Duke scored 1st on us.
*We were behind in the 3rd Q in 7 of the 8 ACC games and 8 of 13.
*We were behind in the 2nd Q in all 8 ACC games.
*The pressure was on the O to catch up all year.
*Yes the O gave up a lot of points, but how many points did the D give us?

We can read stats different ways, and that’s OK. I just think the D has to step up quite a bit this year.

  77. avatar miamimike01 says:

    Good points, Old Fart.

I can say I did NOT know those things…

cautious optimism. I think we can be really good, and I could see UM going 9-4 again.

  78. avatar JSQ says:

Mike, we definitely balance each other out!

  79. avatar Doc Ibis says:

Truth is, everybody’s expectations have skyrocketed this year, I know mine have… I was in the 10 win, January Bowl game club at the end of last season…. Ever since the spring and summer, I’ve been getting into this ACC champs mode… I just want a good season… It can be just as exciting as last season, minus the L’s to UNC and Clemson… We win those games, we’re 11 wins deep, in the ACC championship game, and probably beating FSU or Clemson AGAIN!!!

  80. avatar Esteban says:

saw in Manny’s 5 questions that its Randy who’s currently against moving #44 to the middle. Fits his M.O. I remember Beason wanting to move and Randy saying he was doing good on the outside and didn’t want to risk his play not being as good on the inside and then you have a weaker overall group. Or something like that. I’m hoping Barrow and Lovett can convince Randy to go ahead and make that change.

  81. avatar Hurriphin says:

Worse case, I’m calling for 8-4 and a repeat trip to Orlando vs…………I don’t know, WVU.

Best case, would be 10-2, which would almost ASSURE a spot in the ACC Champ. game.
Rematch against FSU likely there. We win and its the Orange Bowl with a rematch against Pitt. Lose the ACC, and its the Chic-Bowl vs LSU.

  82. avatar Esteban says:

could look at it as our defense made good half time adjustments.

  83. avatar Esteban says:

okay i’ll give all the betters a chance to make money…here is how next year turns out

    FAMU – win +25
    Ohio State – win +9
    Pittsburgh – win +17
    Clemson – win +12
    FSU – win +10
    Duke – win +20
    North Carolina – win +6
    Virginia – win +23
    Maryland – win +15
    Georgia Tech – win +10
    Virginia Tech – win +4
    South Florida – win +17

  84. avatar miamimike01 says:

    I hope you’re right, Este.

    What I wouldn’t give…

  85. avatar Old FartNC says:

I better correct — we took the lead from VA for good at the end of the 1st Q.

In case you’re interested, J12 threw 4 pick 6′s — 24 points. (It just seemed like dozens.)
Our D gave us a safety and the fumble rumble, no pick six — 8 points. We got to do better than that.

  86. avatar rejuvaphan says:

    Este,
I second Mike’s post. I think this team will surprise most, even Truth.

  87. avatar miamimike01 says:

I agree, Old Fart. Defense needs to be more opportunistic and make more plays. CAUSE MORE TO’S!

That’s one quality of a championship team.

Need evidence? 1992 Alabama. That defense single-handedly beat a couple of teams that year.

  88. avatar miamimike01 says:

  89. avatar Hurriphin says:

    Mike,

Last years Bama’ team did the same thing. Texas too. They scored several defensive TD’s.

    Old,

Don’t forget Sharpton’s pick 6 vs Duke. It FINALLY put that game outta reach. Which brings me to another subject……..Those jokers have played us close for the last few years. Isn’t it about time we beat them by 40 like everyone else does?

  90. avatar Hurriphin says:

CanesPundit is a good site Mike. I’ve got them on deck as well.

  91. avatar shwarma says:

I agree with Truth. nothing more to see here. move on.

  92. avatar Old FartNC says:

    I’ll get it right eventually.
The safety belongs to the ST’s. (Punter kicked the overshot out of the EZ.)
That brings the D down to 6 points.

  93. avatar Old FartNC says:

You’re right, Dolphicane, 50′s IR does make it 12 for the D.

  94. avatar miamimike01 says:

    Hurriphin,

Duke is getting better, overall. I expect a slight dip from them this year, because of Thad Lewis leaving. But David Cutcliffe has them competitive. Duke will eventually be 6-6, 7-5, or even 8-4 on a good year.

Cutcliffe knows offense. He was Ole Miss coach while I was there, coached both Mannings. He knows what he’s doing.

  95. avatar Esteban says:

and Truth…75%…over / under on Figs starting at RT this year?

  96. avatar Old FartNC says:

    Este -
If it’s starting FAMU, I’ll go over. If it’s lasting all year, I’m way under.

  97. avatar Hurriphin says:

I do believe Duke’s coaching has improved for sure, but there should still be a VAST talent gap between us. We dispatched of a far more talented USF team more easily than Duke.
Shouldn’t be any closer than 41-17 this year.

  98. avatar The Truth says:

    Hold on…

Just because I don’t think Miami blows out and shuts out OSU doesn’t mean I don’t think they:

    1. Beat OSU
    2. Win 11 games
    3. Play in a BCS Bowl

Because I think they accomplish all of those.

I think with Tan Marino being 100% the offense will score 35-37 avg per game…easily.

I think the running game will be 100% more effective than it’s been in years.

I think Brandon Harris is a top 5 corner in college football coming up with VT and Ray Ray taking away twice as many balls as a unit as they did last season.

I see Bailey, Ojomo and Mrob ALL flirting with 10 sacks or better.

I see either Nelson taking the Mike by the horns and balling out from day 1 or Cmac holding it down – getting much improved play from the defenses WEAKEST position. The LB’s, by Miami standards, have sucked along with the DT’s (AND safeties) and this season they show up. Still, their coverage ability will be tested and, with this group, will be a liability. They don’t cover well. Period.

    Weak link.

The only area of this team that concerns me are kick coverages. They blow. Hard. And not in a Tara Reid/ Paris Hilton kinda good way. I’m not at all worried about our return game buy punt converage again scares me to death.

You stat guys blaming the D forget all the returns and punt blocks given up by special
teams. They’ve sucked. Again, NOT like we all wish Sofia Vergara would…

I still think ST’s costs us a game. I still think the LB’s (and DT’s) HAVE to play better. I think they will.

The offense – if they can find a RT – will be lights out.

    11 wins.

    Maaaaaaaybe 12 if ST’s doesn’t F it up…

  99. avatar The Truth says:

I hope it’s the under Esteban…not out there. To me he’s too exposed even if he’s protected with a TE.

I think they’re still up in the air with who is going to work out there. I honestly think it’s 50/50 with figs being the default guy if no one else earns it.

  100. avatar Esteban says:

Truth, the mention of punt coverage reminds me…no Sam Shields. We went from Kahlil Jones to Sam Shields – two guys who were pretty damn good at covering punts. Curious if anyone takes pride in doing that this year as much as those guys did.

  101. avatar Esteban says:

I’m hoping Figs is at LG, but wanted to see him at RT last year instead of Pipho when it was mentioned.

What’s the deal with Ben Jones? He doesn’t want it as much as you’d hope or something?

  102. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

Este – how about Nelms, to name one?

  103. avatar The Truth says:

…I could see this team winning all of them IF luck plays a part in a game or two and saves them from mistakes. They CAN be that good…

But the the CB opposite #1 has to play lights out…

The LBs have to play FAST and make PLAYS

The DT’s have to cause problems. Period. They need to wreck someones day EACH play. A couple of them have to end the year with 8-12 TFL…

RT needs to play well. I think the rest of the OL will be better by having a kid at RT that is competent.

ST’s can’t be SO weak as they have been.

  104. avatar Esteban says:

3xCanes, he’s the first name that came to mind when I typed that. would be his best shot at increasing his playing time I’d think. Plus we know he’s fast enough. Next name that popped in my scull was Ryan Hill.

  105. avatar The Truth says:

That’s a great point Estaban…Shields was a really good flyer…maybe Nelms moves there?

  106. avatar The Truth says:

    I don’t think it’s that with Jones…I just don’t think he’s good enough yet

  107. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

Yeah, Hill would have to be the next guy to mention. Nelms had a few good pops last year, I remember that. Speaking of special teams, having Hopfinger do the kickoffs, should help (fingers crossed). I think I sweated just about every kickoff last year in close games. We gave up to much field position (and that killer TD before halftime against Clemson). Hoping Hopfinger is working his leg this summer to boom those kickoffs into the endzone.

Other than Nelms & HIll, who else?

  111. avatar JSQ says:

No one thinks that anyone on here is saying we can’t win at OSU or won’t be good. Some of us are just more cheerleader types and others are realists. I obviously fall into the first camp. I was the annoying chick at the last game at the OB cheering everytime they got positive yards. While Patrick was ripping up Orange Bowl seats with his bare hands, I sat there and told anyone who would listen, including the nice ladies who were handing out posters at the exit, that we were getting a great recruting class in 2008 and Randy Shannon would lead us to our next title. People thought I was insane. Last year, when they interviewed me on the local news to promote the alumni event, the anchor (an alum) laughed when I told him we could be a 10 win team (damn Spiller and ST coverage!) and beat Oklahoma.

Bottom line, it’s fine to be a realist but there is nothing wrong with dreaming either. We are all rooting for the same team and we are getting there and a little optimism never hurt anyone. Also, Steve Perry told us “Don’t Stop Believin’” and he ain’t never lied.

  112. avatar miamimike01 says:

Watching the Clemson vs GT replay of ACC championship.. Ford and Spiller were that whole offense. With or without Parker theres no reason we should lose this game.

Interesting Article in the Palm Beach Post on Bailey.. Ponder says he didnt realize how big he was. Bailey said it was easy to come back with the team we have and the chance to win it all or atleast the ACC. I have heard a couple players talk about winning it all recently. Coach has instilled this mentality into there head and I dont think its just talk, I tihnk thjey believe and know it.

Should be interesting to see how many junior recievers blow up like hankerson did last year. Whose next?

  115. avatar miamimike01 says:

    I agree, Philly.

Clemson won’t be the hurdle they were last year. Their punch is gone, IMO. I know they have another good RB in Harper, (UM recruited him) but he’s no Spiller.

The culture is different. And RS we have to thank. It’s totally flipped from Coker now…

    LOL

You guys are really underestimating 3 things:

    1. Miami is playing an AWAY game against a very good football team
    2. Terrell Pryor is better than you give him credit for
    3. Since it’s game 2 there is still very much the element of surprise – OSU will still be the same Sweater Vest OSU but they may have something for us we haven’t seem…

I wil bet my (rooster) Miami isn’t blowing out or shutting out OSU. It’s just not realistic and you guys are setting yourself to have something to complain about if they don’t.

    >>>>>>>

Truth, I think OSU will be jacked, at least as jacked as they can be in their style, and yes Tressel will have a few wrinkles the first of which will be something to the TE or RB drifting out of the backfield.

However, having studied them and Pryor in particular, I’m not impressed with what they’re bringin back this year. The defense last year will be better than this year’s largely because of the DL losses and the new safeties.

Pryor’s improved but he’s still not the QB J12 is. Their WRs are maybe 2 1/2 deep with Carter gone, and #12 is deeply average. Posey will get locked down, so who’s Pryor going to throw to??

Everything rests on them being able to run, something they do fairly well in spots.

Overall, I just don’t see anything special about them at all, at any position except for the DE cat who came back. They’re solid at just about every position though, which will probably be good enough to beat the Big Ten.

Those fools up there talk about “this year” almost every year. I guess that win over Oregon really blew up their heads, which to me says everything cause what kind of team and fans get jacked about beating OREGON??? GTFOH with that corn-ball shyt.

They’re starting to remind me of the way people used to automatically hype Meeechigan every year.

As far as the element of surprise, well, that’s almost completely in our favor. Their last film is the Wisky game, so just think about how many players they haven’t seen and how much the players have grown and matured since then, to say nothing of how much Whipple and Lovett will improve.

I think they’e in for a rude awakening, similar to 2008 at USC. I don’t THINK it will be a dismantling like that but stack of tactical and strategic and unpredictable advantages is leaning our way man.

That’s why Gino said Pryor was easy to turn into a one-dimensional QB. I expect BH and DVD to have big games. I’d love to see LA house one too. Then for Seantrel to get a little burn in a blowout. LOL Talk about throwing salt in the wound. Miami once again dumps the whole state of Ohio. hahaha

Great points Old Fart. To me, the D’s problems last year were the same as they’ve been since 2004. COMING OUT FLAT.

We came out hard and fast twice last year…GT and USF. Every other game was lukewarm growing into warm. To me, that’s a function and result of having too many underclassmen in leadership positions who’ve never done it in college and are learning on the fly and the few upperclassmen we had were very far from being Bosses and Hawgs.

We’ll knwo if they’re playing Hurricane Football in the FAMU game. If they’re fast, crisp and merciless from the kickoff to the final whistle, 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams, we’ll know the mentality is where it needs to be.

I think that’s where it will be.

  121. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Philly, yeah Clemson’s lack of tactics is going to kill them without the HR threats of Spiller and Ford. Spiller should’ve won the Heisman at least once but that offense was so simplistic he never really showcased his talent.

We’ll be road-warriors and the sirens will be sounding by the time that game comes. We’ll be fresh off two stunning road wins and breathing fire strutting into to Death Valley. Oh baby!

  122. avatar Captain Optimist says:

I wil bet my (rooster) Miami isn’t blowing out or shutting out OSU. It’s just not realistic and you guys are setting yourself to have something to complain about if they don’t.

    >>>>>

T, I don’t think we’ll shut them out but I look at the USC ’08 game and I see us being a lot closer to that USC team, in some ways more talented, less in others, like LB….

And they demolished them. Granted Pryor was a true frosh I think but SC demolished and controlled their OL all day long, so it wouldn’t have mattered who was at QB.

By the same token, on offense, Tan Marino is more or less on the same page as Sanchez that year and our skill guys are as good if not better.

I guess the biggest differences were probably OL, at least right now, and LB. The other big difference is continuity and familiarity/comfort/confidence in the system. Everyone knew exactly what they were supposed to do and where they were supposed to be because of the conitnuity of Carroll, even with new coordinators. We don’t quite have that but it’s getting there.

OSU will definitely try some new wrinkles but their mentality is still the same, and eventually their methods and tactics will reflect this.

And did I mention their DL lost five of the top 9 in that rotation? Hmmmm. I know they have some talented bodies to plug in but there’s no substitute for experience, esp. in the 2nd game of the season.

Is that Kool Aid or real factors?? Those fools in Columbus have the ultimate supply of Kool Aid.

  123. avatar PhillyCane says:

I hope your right el capiton.. I agree on all of your OSU points as well as the famu game. How in the hell did we let them score first last year? Youll know if we r ready for OSU after that game. I will also be watching Marshall vs OSU as well

  124. avatar PhillyCane says:

Parker looks good in the ACCCG but god damn Spiller is killin it.. dudes the only person whose scored for the tigers. They are gona drop off big time this year. Whatd they only win 8 maybe 9 games last year? I see them winning 7 at most this year. The Atlantic is FSU’s to lose as they win by default

  125. avatar Captain Optimist says:

    My point about underclassmen leading…..

    >>>>>>

Last year, the Hurricanes got off to a 3-1 start and moved into the top 10 in the national polls. With a roster dominated by freshmen and sophomores, Byrd said many of his teammates took the attitude of, “Oh, we’re going to the national championship.”

Instead, UM went 4-3 down the stretch and finished with a lackluster 20-14 loss to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl.

“Now there are no excuses,” Byrd said, toying with the wrist band he received from Hankerson. “What can you say now if we don’t win. You can’t go, ‘Oh, we’re young.’ “

  126. avatar PhillyCane says:

    The wristbands are played out…

  127. avatar miamimike01 says:

whatever motivates our guys, I’m for. T-shirts, wristbands, helmet stickers, don’t care. If they feel like it motivates them, enough said… IMO, of course.

  128. avatar PhillyCane says:

NVM Parker had pretty bad stats and a couple Ints while Spiller has now run for over 230 yards with 6 min left in the 4th.. Theyr now starting RB Ellington is having a decent game backing up Spiller. He is still no Spiller and will never be. Both defenses look awful. Two wins next year. Im tired. Cant sleep. Go Canes.

  129. avatar PhillyCane says:

MM1, I agree. But im supersticious and last time we had them it didnt turn out too well. But hey whatever floats your boat..

  130. avatar Calvin says:

People keep talking about that clemnson game as if spiller scared anybody on our team. He had 2 big plays by capitolizing off our mistakes, low line drive kick-off, and than scoring on a hurt sean spence, other than that, he was average at best. While ford did catch that pass in overtime, hell, what did he do the rest of the game, i guess we can say he helped open up te underneath routes for the tight-ends. Even if those 2 were their this year, it wouldn’t matter, that’s the type of competition we constantly shut down when we balled. So when the fact of the matter is, we still should have beat them last year, but we all know that was the mark whipple attitude game, so in overtime we got real conservative all of a sudden. Also, that was a play where brandon harris should’ve been on ford irregardless, instead of covering that nobody he covered. Coming into this year, it’s going to be a real good match-up with us facing jamarcus forston and bert reed, make no mistake about it, those to can ball, and with ponder and his decision making. But again, i’ll go back to, the whole key to his season is if this d-line starts wrecking havoc on a regular basis, that’s going to elevate the play of the whole team.

As soon as marcus robinson got that sack/forced fumble on ponder, that changed the whole game, because ponder was feeling to comfortable, and they were on their way to putting more points on the board, possibly another touchdown. This year, ponder is going to feel more of that type of pressure, from all angles, he’ll be forced to run alot more in this years game, so it’ll be an interestng match-up.

I know jimbo fisher has that real sour taste in his mouth, but let’s go back, that game was another game that was close because of bad special teams play. How many times did we see reid bringing it back across the 50, and than after we took the lead, the only reason fsu was in position to score that quick was because we kicked it short, so we could get better v=coverage, next thing you know, fsu, was knocking at the door.

But again old fart, your stats are misleading, while we may have been behind in certain quarters of games, you didn’t say by how many, so if we’re only down 3 points or even 7 points, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, that means the defense held those teams pretty much the majority of the rest of the way, as evidence by our record. Alot of times our offense put the defense in bad situations, for instance, that unc game, if that’s apart of your equation, your stats are already skewed.

The way you put those stats out their is like someone going right now and adding up all the scores from the games last year and than saying our defense gave up this many points with out taking into account the td’s that were scored on special teams or defense.

If we can get regular/basic kick-off/punt coverage, that’s to more games that we’ll win with no problem. So that’s what i’m looking to see and i’m sure shannon will continue to stress how important special teams is, because it sets the tone and gives the defense 75 to 80 yards to defend, to many times last year, the defense was defending only 50 & 45 yards. So irregardless of who we play, we get special teams cleaned up, and every team we play will have hell trying to score against this defense, so thats another thing to factor into your equation old fart, but i like that reserch you did.

This team has euff talent to beat anyone anyday and we stay healthy and get some young guns to be effective in certain areas, this team is going to start busting heads. As far as the osu game goes, shannon is more than likely going to treat it like he did the virginia game last year, where it seemed like he was going all out, shannon won’t be able to help but feel like he can erase some of the pain from us not closing the show and being robbed in the fiesta bowl. Just like whipple last year in a few games, we blinked in those games to, if we get the ball 1st and goal against any team inside the 5 yard line, and don’t score, i’ll be surprised, that’s where having damien berry in the game and mike james are going to pay off, along with a more physical o-line in the running game. Their pass blocking, we’ll see.

    Calvin-
Agree with much of what you said. But also agree w/ the Capt that the D tended to start flat. Why else would FAMU score first, or VA take a 1st Q lead. Look at our Ds red zone performance. Outstanding TD/FG ratio. If we could stop everybody in the RZ, why couldn’t we stop them in midfield? It seemed like our guys got their backs up in the RZ, but also because in midfield our DBs were spread all over and they could always slip a TE or RB out into the clear. I mentioned predictability. Watch the LBs in midfield — 3 across and 5 yards deep. Once in the RZ they actually seemed to get involved in the game.

I zinged the STs before, especially the coverage. Work to do there.

I agree we could have much improved running game. 1) We should have the lead more often. 2) We have Patrick and some beasts up front. Did you notice Washington trot (trudge) back from 5+ yards downfield vs Wisc? Steamroller!
