1. Florida A&M Rattlers
Thursday, September 2, 7:30 PM, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)
Coach – Joe Taylor (17-6, 2 seasons at FAMU; 214-82-4 in 30 seasons)
2009 Record – 8-3 overall, 6-2 MEAC
Returning Starters – 13 (6 offense/7 defense, kicker and punter)
Key Offensive Players – RB Philip Sylvester, Sr., WR Isaac West, Sr., WR Kevin Elliot, Jr., LT Brandon Curry, Jr.
Key Defensive Players – LB John Williams, So., LB Alvis Graham, Jr., CB Qier Hall, Sr., CB Curtis Holcomb, Sr., FS Greg Harvey, Jr.
2010 Outlook: Having coached Hampton for 16 seasons, Taylor knows what it takes to field successful teams in the MEAC. It usually means having a strong quarterback, and this season either Ukpai or Battle – or both – will have to replace 2009 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year Curtis Pulley. Sylvester should benefit with more carries after Pulley rushed for 881 yards last season. The receivers, led by Elliott, form a particularly strong unit. Both lines should be improved. The special teams lost all-world returner Leroy Vann, who returned five punts for touchdowns last season. With Ukpai and Battle seemingly ready at QB, and some underclassmen stepping into key roles, the Rattlers figure to be even better than last season.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – While the Rattlers do bring a more experienced squad into Sun Life Stadium, they are replacing their quarterback, which spells trouble. They might be able to keep this game mildly interesting for a little while, but the overall speed and depth of Hurricanes roster will eventually overwhelm the Rattlers. Miami should win big.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
Saturday, September 11, 3:40 PM, Ohio Stadium (102, 329 capacity)
Coach – Jim Tressel (94-21 in 9 seasons)
2009 Record – 11-2, 7-1 Big 10, 2009 Bowl Game – Rose Bowl vs. Oregon (W, 26-17)
Returning Starters – 14 (8 offense, 6 defense)
Key Offensive Players – QB Terrelle Pryor, Jr., RB Brandon Saine, Sr., WR Dane Sanzenbacher, Sr., WR DeVier Posey, Jr., C Mike Brewster, Jr., LG Justin Boren, Sr.
Key Defensive Players – DE Cameron Hayward, Sr., SLB Etienne Sabino, Jr., WLB Ross Homan, Sr., MLB Brian Rolle, Sr., CB Chimdi Checkwa, Sr., FS Jermale Hines, Sr.
2010 Outlook: The Buckeyes have three true tests this season, the first of which when the Miami Hurricanes come calling, and road games at Wisconsin (10/16) and Iowa (11/20). If they can survive those three games, Ohio St. will win the Big 10 and make a fourth national championship game appearance in nine seasons. Expect the running game to be a handful, but if Ohio St. expects to challenge for the title, Pryor needs to find some consistency in the passing game. The defense will be stingy and they boast great secondary play. This should be a BCS team.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Despite what some of our friends around the blogosphere think, this is a heavyweight fight. The Hurricanes need to take the crowd out of the game early and find a way to slow down the running game. Playing mistake-free football will be a must. If the ‘Canes pull this one out…
3.Pittsburgh Panthers
Thursday, September 23, 7:30 PM, Heinz Field (65,050 capacity)
Coach – Dave Wannstedt (35-26 in 5 seasons)
2009 Record – 10-3, 5-2 Big East, 2009 Bowl Game – Meineke Car Care Bowl vs. North Carolina (W, 19-17)
Returning Starters – 11 (5 offense, 6 defense, kicker and punter)
Key Offensive Players – RB Dion Lewis, So., WR Jon Baldwin, Jr., LT Jason Pinkston, Sr., RT Lucas Nix, Jr., LG Chris Jacobson, Jr.
Key Defensive Players – DE Greg Romeus, Sr., DE Jabaal Sheard, Sr., WLB Greg Williams, Jr., SLB Max Gruder, Jr., SS Dom DeCicco, Sr.
2010 Outlook: The Panthers have a talented football team that should compete again for the Big East Championship. RB Dion Lewis is explosive (325 carries, 1799 yards, 17 TDs), and WR Jon Baldwin had 57 catches for 1,111 yards along with eight scores. But pulling the trigger will be inexperienced QB Tino Sunseri (So.). The defense is adequate, but the pass rush is extremely dangerous; the two starters at defensive end combined for 13 sacks and will test the Miami tackles early and often.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – This game is going to be tricky. Pittsburgh is a physical team with good players littering the roster. What makes this game so intriguing is if Miami beats Ohio St., can they collect themselves in time for a salty Panther team on the road which is out to make a statement against the Hurricanes? Inexperienced QB play will cost Pitt in the end.
Saturday, October 2, TBA, Clemson Memorial Stadium (84,473 capacity)
Coach – Dabo Swinney (13-8 in two years)
2009 Record – 9-5, 6-3 ACC, 2009 Bowl Game – Music City Bowl vs. Kentucky (W, 21-13)
Returning Starters – 13 (7 offense, 6 defense, kicker and punter)
Key Offensive Players – QB Kyle Parker, So., RB Jamie Harper, Jr., RB Andre Ellington, So., LT Chris Hairston, Sr., RG Antoine McClain, Jr.
Key Defensive Players – DT Jarvis Jenkins, Sr., DE Da ‘Quan Bowers, Jr., WLB Brandon Maye, Jr., CB Marcus Gilchrist, Sr., FS Rashard Hall, So., SS DeAndre McDaniel, Sr.
2010 Outlook: C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford are gone. While the offense does take a hit, RBs Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper will fill in admirably. Kyle Parker will return for one more season, along with four starters on the offensive line. DeAndre McDaniel chose to return for his senior season, giving the Tigers a secondary threat. Clemson is going to have a tough time defending their Atlantic Division title with road games at North Carolina, Boston College, and Florida St., along with home dates with Miami and Georgia Tech.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Miami will have revenge on their minds when entering Death Valley. Clemson is more experienced upfront, but the explosion on offense won’t be there like it was last year. However, Miami will need to play well to escape with a victory. Don’t be surprised if this game is close going into the fourth quarter.
5. Florida State Seminoles
Saturday, October 9, TBA, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)
Coach – Jimbo Fisher, 1st season
2009 Record – 7-6, 4-4 ACC 2009 Bowl Game – Gator Bowl vs. West Virginia (W, 33-21)
Returning Starters – 13 (8 offense, 5 defense, kicker and punter)
Key Offensive Players – QB Christian Ponder, Sr., LG Rodney Hudson, Sr., LT Andrew Datko, Jr., C Ryan McMahon, Sr.
Key Defensive Players – DE Markus White, Sr., WLB Nigel Bradham, Jr., CB Greg Reid, So.
2010 Outlook: Head coach Jimbo Fisher appears to have the program headed back in the right direction, but the real tests come on Saturdays. He inherits an experienced offensive line and Heisman Trophy candidate QB Christian Ponder. The ‘Noles return only five defensive starters, but that’s probably a good thing. The renewed energy surrounding the program have many in Tallahassee and around the country thinking that FSU can win the Atlantic Division.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – When these two programs get together it’s usually memorable. We don’t know why 2010 would be any different. Even though we think Miami is more talented, there’s every reason to expect this game will be yet another epic chapter in the UM/FSU rivalry. Youth and the lack of playmakers on offense and defense for the ‘Noles will ultimately doom them to defeat.
6. Duke Blue Devils
Saturday, October 16, TBA, Wallace Wade Stadium (33,941 capacity)
Coach – David Cutcliffe (9-17 in two seasons, 53-44, 9 seasons)
2009 Record – 5-7, 3-5 ACC 2009 Bowl Game – N/A
Returning Starters – 15 (9 offense, 6 defense, kicker and punter)
Key Offensive Players – WR Conner Vernon, So., WR Donovan Varner, Jr., TE Brett Huffman, Sr.
Key Defensive Players – SS Matt Daniels
2010 Outlook: David Cutcliffe has done an excellent job in getting Duke competitive in just two seasons. But with a schedule that features Alabama, Miami, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Georgia Tech, it would be a small miracle if Duke could match last year’s 5-7 mark. Duke must also replace departed QB Thaddeus Lewis who broke 49 school and 26 career records.
Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Duke put a bit of a scare into the Hurricanes last season in Miami. Don’t look for the same result. The Hurricanes firepower on offense will put distance between them and the Blue Devils early. Miami should handle Duke easily.

This was already posted on the last blog, but it’s an excellent article from milian regarding desmond howards take on the canes, so i post it again.
Major point i came away with:
”Howard says depth may keep the Hurricanes from being a great team this season: “You look at it, their first five games – it’s a tremendously difficult schedule. You have to have some type of depth to be able to weather that type of schedule. Their starters can play with anyone in the country. They’re going to have to stay healthy because I don’t think they have the depth that you need to win a conference championship especially if they lose key players. The name of the game for the Miami Hurricanes is to stay healthy.”

BG, that’s why I say very, very few people have actually researched this year’s Suckeye version, esp. based on last year. Their OL dominated very, very few teams, just check the rushing stats. Pryor never looked all-world, even against Oregon- he just looked good. Half the time he looked seriously mediocre…USC, Purdue, Wisky. But somehow that’s all forgotten because of 1 half of football against a defense that routinely gave up 25+ points. And OSU only scored 26.
And their RBs and WRs looked good all year never great or even dangerous, just very good, all-around solid.
Even if you didn’t know anything about Us but the Wisky game but you saw the holes on OSU at OL-DL, you’d be hesitant with this game.
But people just believe the hype. It’s slightly amazing actually. Maybe they do it because they can’t think of anyone else who’s returning a bunch of starters. I mean, how is OU ranked higher than Us when we beat them last year and they lost several key seniors?
Maybe it’s because people don’t know we are actually IMPROVING with graduation from last year. haha It’s not supposed to work like that.
Truth, Johnson HAS to be better than Pipho on size and strength alone, even if it’s just in run-blocking. No way he can be that soft.
Shields is officially taking over Jarett Bush’s snaps to close out the preseason, and again, despite the dropsies, he is making a name for himself in GB. Everyone I’m talking to thinks he will steal Bush’s job and GB won’t miss a beat. Just hope for the sake of you Canes/Dolphins fans that the Fins don’t pick up Bush when he gets cut. You will not be happy with the results.

Dolphins are deep at cornerback. Will Allen, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Nolan Carrol, Jason Allen, Nate Ness have all show something at one time or another. Need to prove it soon or the potentially good young ones will be hanging out with the Jason Allens of the football world, special teams and 4th or 5th CB.

dz8 – THANK YOU!!
nordlinger writes great! i definitely recommend this link for everyone (about beautiful salzburg!!!)
don't agree with his political comments, not that it matters.
regarding Israel – i don't think any of us can really appreciate how it is to live in a small country that constantly has to be on its toes regarding it's neighbors. they definitely have to consider security & self-defense a priority.
That said, it's still disappointing for me, that a country built on a race that has experienced so much violent oppression & racism during it's history, is not trying to do more to make sure they don't fall into the same trap regarding the Palestinians.
I truly believe that their long-term security would be enhanced by being much less oppressive and much more supportive of the Palestinians.
I blame it particularly on the rapid growth of jewish fundamentalists.
But i tend to see the major problems of this world lying at the feet of fundamentalists everywhere (which includes nationalistic fundamentalism, like the IRA, the Basques, the Sindhu(?) majority in Sri Lanka, the Chinese Communists, etc.).
The Muslims are the obvious ones we hear about, but the jewish fundis also annoy the f _ _ _ out of me; so do the Hindus (caste system as an example), the christian fundamentalists in the usa have totally messed up the republican party (the government should get out of our pockets and into our pants) in my opinion, etc. etc. etc.
And nordlinger implies that the erdogan government is a problem for the west in Turkey.
well duh!
but the corrupt & inefficient nationalists who ere there before were HORRIBLE. of course the people voted Erdogan.
And incidentally, his islamic party is WAY more free market oriented than his nationalistic predecessors; and certainly – to this point – less ioppressive / more free than the predecessors.
The secular party FINALLY nominated a new person, who might take them in a different direction and actually give Turkey an opposition that's not so f _ _ _ _ d up.

Tough choice with faulk…but Green is arguably #2 all time as his position with Hayes not too far behind. Faulk was amazing…but we had a list going around here and Faulk wasn’t top 2.
And then Troy Palumissedanothertackle get’s in because no one ever wore the #43.

Funny, that’s what Horn said was his biggest improvement compared to last year, improving his mental-game. I guess he still has a ways to go. He’s a RS frosh though, so it kind of makes sense.
I guess the question then is, will Seantrel overtake him this year, and if so , how soon?
Yeah…I’m not knocking JJ. I’m just saying that team wise the OL isn’t as strong if he’s the starter

DAT, I think he’ll come around. He’s learning a new position, adding muscle. I think he and Shayvon will be surprising late bloomers. Both have the body up to par now the mind-game has to come together. Until then they’ll be solid STers.
Captain, U may be right about CJ tough to move from safety to LB…only time will tell.
Speakings of LBs:
Funny, #52 thought he was going to come in and own shiz, but it seems like humble pie is being served (which again we are best when a freshman isn’t needed to play one of the most important positions on D, I am just saying someone has been much quieter lately).
Interesting news about Gaines as I had not yet heard his name but obviously the play is speaking for itself (unless this is a ploy to also light a fire under Holton). Would have thought Cornelius with the time would have that shot. I think Gaines, Williams, Cornelius and Nelson can all provide some nice depth over the next couple years while being groomed for a starting role.
Truth or anyone else, Spence is listed at 220 on the roster but is that true. I have not seen him in person, but if I had to guess from photos 215 would be pushing it. Just ask as I am thinking about MLB next year.
On DBs, we also keep hearing Kacy Rogers name, do you think he sticks at safety because of the size?

Great article Mike. It’s good for someone like me…GO CANES.
Shwarm, yeah it is funny about #52 but I think he’ll come around. It’s good for him though. He’ll get hungrier and work harder. All those boys will be ready to ball next year. They’ll have the muscle and be ready to rumble. It’s going to be a serious rotation.
I think Kacey could stay at safety cause he has a lot of room on his frame to grow. It’ll be interesting to see these guys mature. He and J. Reid back there would be serious in a couple of years.
It’ll be Jamal Reid and Alonzo Highsmith.
Shwarm, Spence looks like he just might be 220, judging from a video interview of him I saw I think at Manny’s or maybe ufootball.com or somwhere. The reporter even remarked on how he looked “completely different” compared to two years ago.
DZ8, nah, Highsmith should stay at QB. Besides, if Rodgers stays at SS I don’t think Highsmith will be able to overtake him after a year or two.
Autumn, you need to go back and watch the Allen Bailey video again. It’s HILARIOUS.

ALL i can say is lets play some football already..We are ready to see these guys ball out..no more articles, pep talks, long post and predictions by Capt O., talk of the o -line …etc…I JUST WANT SHOWTIME. On another note though Pipho was smart but he sure was THE BIGGEST WINK LINK WE EVER HAD AS A STATER LINEMAN. This guy was forever get blowned up by faster and bigger ends. I”ll take 6’6 JJ over him right now…imo all he has to do is block anyone in his vacinity use his big body to hammer at opponents ends. Besides i’m not worried about our line because they are getting plenty of work against our first team D. And if we are any good as adverstised then we’ll definitely going to bull rush teams. Again lets play ball already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Sheesh, talk about delusional.
Just watched ESPN’s ACC preview and of course Mark May didn’t even mention UM and picked North Carolina to win it. Herbie picked the U.
Mark May picked UNC?? LOL. He just loves to hate doesn’t he. haha I can’t wait to see his face after 9-11 and then the rest of the year to see how he backtracks.
I am working on the recipe for the mojito jello shots. I have 2 men trying to remember to tell 2 women. I better have it by tomorrow.

Truth lol on the falling asleep and talking. I love those videos of kids falling asleep while eating. But my favorite is watching my 40 something hubby fall asleep with remote in hand, just to have it fall on the floor and scare the crap out of him. Wow, Truth, I have no idea what you are referring to!

JSQ, C1, FWIW: ( from an OSU blog )
BEST PLACE TO PARK FOR THE GAME
“I personally think trying to find a fraternity or other house on campus selling parking for $10-$20 is the best option, as it is affordable and close enough where you can walk to the stadium in 15 minutes. Other options include the Fair Grounds, Ackerman Lots, and the Agricultural Education Building Lot. The latter, on Woody Hayes Drive (right across from Coffey Road Park), allows you to park there for free starting at 6 AM. It’s a pain in the rear end to wake up that early, but well worth it if you can get someone to follow you there, drop your car off, and go back to your hotel to sleep for a couple more hourse. Or you can just start the party at 6 AM and get a head start on everyone else!”
LOL CC. I’ve saw that happen to my father a zillion times. That’s hilarious. And take the remote and get the a*s chewing of your life about he IS watching that!!

Thanks, 404, I think we are just going to caravan at 5:30 to the day lots and get as close as we can. That is the idea from Patrick’s suckeye friends. I don’t really trust random ones on a message board, which is why I think you said FWIW!

Did you all know that the Big 12 has been the best passing conference the past few years?
I didn’t.
here’s some info regarding the question: “will there be a significant drop-off in passing yards this year”?
A shift to the ground? For the second consecutive season, the Big 12 will begin after a quarterback exodus, losing three of the top five quarterbacks in the league. The Big 12 still holds a reputation as a passer’s league, but that could change. Heisman mainstays McCoy and Bradford have moved on, and the league’s leading passer, Kansas’ Todd Reesing, is also gone. Meanwhile, 13 of the top 15 rushers in the league are back, including four of the top five rushers — all in the Big 12 North. Quarterbacks should continue to rule the South, and the league’s top two teams both have quarterbacks with high hopes, but the best backs in the league are in the North. Kansas State’s Daniel Thomas, Iowa State’s Alexander Robinson, Nebraska’s Roy Helu Jr. and Colorado’s Rodney Stewart all have great chances to top 1,000 yards. Thomas, Robinson and Helu all did it in 2009.
marve is all set . . .
“Due to the presence of Miami transfer Robert Marve on the roster, Caleb TerBush lost out on any real shot he had at being Purdue’s starting quarterback in 2010.
Now, TerBush has lost out on any shot at replacing Marve if the starter goes down with an injury.
According to a press release issued by the school, TerBush has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2010 season. The redshirt sophomore will remain on scholarship and practice with the Boilermakers.”

now here’s an interesting article . . . and an interesting idea to follow the rest of the way thru december & january:
ACC Coastal strongest division in the country?
August, 25, 2010
By Heather Dinich
No, really.
Think about it. The ACC’s Coastal Division has four teams ranked among the Top 25 in both the coaches’ and Associated Press polls — Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Miami and North Carolina.
My colleague, Mark Schlabach, Tweeted this week that the Coastal Division might be the toughest division in college football this year.
What other division out there is deeper?
Possibly the SEC West, where Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Arkansas are all ranked. You have to go outside the Top 20 in the Associated Press poll, though, to find Auburn and LSU. Same can be said for Auburn in the USA Today poll. (Hey C-low, trade you a defending national champ for two top 20 teams?)
As for the rest of the BCS conferences with divisions, you’ve got the Big Nebraska North. Texas and Oklahoma rule the Big 12 South. You’ve got Florida and Georgia in the SEC East.
Of course, debating with myself got old quickly, so I emailed SEC blogger Chris Low and Big 12 blogger David Ubben to see what they thought, and here were their responses:
UBBEN
It’s close, especially at the top, but I’d take OU and Texas over every team in that division. The middle is muddled, but we’ll see where they are at year’s end. Texas A&M and Texas Tech could both be in the Top 25. Oklahoma State should be close behind. Five teams in the division got votes in the preseason poll.
At the bottom, I’d take the Big 12 South by far.
Every team in the Big 12 South has the capacity to win 7-8 games, but I’m not sure you can say that about Virginia or Duke.
LOW
The SEC West has four teams ranked in the preseason Top 25 and a fifth, Ole Miss, that will have a chance, especially with the addition of Jeremiah Masoli. The top dog is of course Alabama, the defending national champion. Arkansas will have one of the most potent passing games in the country, while Auburn is one of those teams talented enough to win nine or 10 games. Mississippi State just missed playing for a bowl game last season and will be even better this season. You never count out LSU’s talent, either. Bottom line: You may well see all six Western Division teams in bowl games at the end of the year. That’s what you call a power division.
Tony Barnhart says the ACC and SEC are the deepest conferences out there. Agreed, and for the ACC, it’s all thanks to the Coastal Division. We’ll find out if it’s stronger than the SEC West when North Carolina takes on LSU in the season opener. After Virginia Tech’s loss to Bama last year, it’s SEC West 1, ACC Coastal 0. Low made a great point, though — let’s see who’s playing in bowl games — and who’s winning them — before we judge.
now here’s some really interesting information:
Duke has sold out of football tickets this season . . . this is the first time in over a decade that the Blue Devils have done so.
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=news&cd=6&ved=0CFwQqQIwBQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fhostednews%2Fap%2Farticle%2FALeqM5gG3qK0wu4hkz6gTyeszMUQhMIBqgD9HQP5TO2&rct=j&q=miami%20hurricanes%20football%20&ei=alV2TJSILsWBlAemk9HsCw&usg=AFQjCNGBDuw82YWO6u8r6wV2dvj9zLhz7A&cad=rja
Bosh
joker phillips ain’t no joke! The big 12 leading in passing is no surprise, that conference lives by the spread offense and with mike leach being their as long as he was, you already should have known that answer.
As far as our conference goes, i been saying it for a few years now, that we got the toughest conference and the best coaches overall in college football in the acc. It also just got better with the hiring of that coach at virginia, ole tom obrien is having more difficulties than he thought he would win he took over the unc st. job, but he’s still a good coach. shannon will end up being the best over-all coach in the country as time goes on win it comes to wins and losses, the funny thing about college football, no 1 coach has that many national championships on their resume that can’t be caught right now. So as it stands, you got 2 college coaches with 2 national championships under their belt, the majority of the rest only have 1.
With this crew we got now, and the main thing that i like about shannon being the headcoach, when people talk about what a True Hurricane is, when you throw out all the definitions, shannon fits them pretty much all of them. He’s one of the main guys that helped to continue but more importantly help to enhance UM to that next level. When it came to film studying, making sure guys were doing what they were suppose to do on and off the field, teaching the younger and older guys on the team. being the one other teammates looked too for leadership and inspiring others to be great, that’s what shannon has always been about. Now, that’s just some of it, but the main point of that though is, now shannon is tutoring an 85 man roster and the majority of them have began to take on shannon’s mentality/preparation and strong work ethic, it’s no mystery why mike james got the #22 jersey, that’s a man straight out of the shannon mold right their, he’s earned everything he’s gotten, a team player, and just an over-all outstanding person and player that’s the ultimate competitor and teammate.
mike james is our best blocking back is it stands right now, even greg cooper whiffs on to many blocks back their, damien berry is a decent blocker when he picks up where the free man is coming from, and miller time, a work in progess in the pass blocking game. That’s where sol made guys earn their money, you want to carry the ball, you had better learn how to block and pick up where the free man is comign from. That’s why pretty much all his backs can be considered legendary blockers. Would’ve been great to see what coach sol would be doing with all these runningbacks right now. In comes cassano, at least with tommie robinson we know, fumbling was not going to happen, in the about the 2 to 3 years tommie robinson was here, you can pretty much count how many times our runninbacks lst fumbles on 1 hand.
he was a real tough runningbacks coach, he’ll do well where ever he goes. Real solid football coach, now comes the cassano project, i’m glad he’s here if it wasn’t coach sol in terms of not being a guy that’ll come in being whooed by the caliber of athletes here and just knowing what the standard should be and has been, nobody new that better than soldinger, one of those coaches that if you impress him, you not gone know it, he’s seen some of the best to ever do it at UM. When you coach edgerrin james, portis, mcgahee, frank gore(who i still think is the best back to come thru here thus far that i’ve seen) and he even had tyrone moss running like a man possessed once it was his time to shine. The same things that made sol a great coach were the same things that hurt him as a recruiter, he wasn’t going to kiss azz out their, although i do know if sol was here under randy shannon, that would’ve been a real good combination.
shannon though has his guys now and he’s making the right chess moves as we go along. The cream is steadily rising, the shannon plan is in full effect mode, it’s not about if shannon will win a national championship, it’s about how many, with the main thing being team health at key spots. This season, i’m just looking for better overall team execution, offensively and defensively and special teams of course where the numbers are their now. Last year, i knew we could beat any team out their on most days, going into this year, i really feel like that now.
Will be interesting to see what harland gunn does this year, if that guy starts playing like he did in highschool, d-linemen are going to hate him, if he can start pass blocking as well as he run blocks, he’ll be a force, we will be more physical in the trenches, running the ball and stopping the run. I would luv for us to blitz pryor on the 1st defensively play of the game, just set the tone early, if they go play action, who cares, just blitz em.
wow – that’s a great article about bosher that DATcane put a link to . . . you could almost imagine someone thinking he should be in the top 5 canes!
here’s a sampling of the article (but there’s much more):
“Bosher scored 94 points as a sophomore for Miami, then added 92 more last season. No other kicker in major college football has made as many field goals over the past two seasons (32) as accurately as Bosher, who has connected on 88.9 percent of his tries since taking over the job for the Hurricanes.
And good luck finding anyone else at the top level of the college game who has the same kicking, punting and tackling numbers as Bosher over the past two years. On that front, he stands alone.”
and i spent my lunch periiod watching the ’89 notre dame game (thanks for the link calvin!).
inspiring (though the end of the game has some technical difficulties – i couldn’t get anything on segment 12; only a bit on 13 – where there’s a problem with a hockey game interfering).
hard to believe that both our starting cornerbacks were knocked out of the game in the first quarter . . . though ken berry (damien’s papa!) managed to get back in the game for the 2nd half.
dale dawkins was the man! was he also good in professional football? can’t remember anymore.
the classic was the 3rd quarter, where the canes controlled the ball for the first 10 1/2 minutes ending with a TD.
it included a 2nd down and 48 at the 2 or 3 yard line; then converting the 3rd & 41 to a Mr. Randall Hill.
wouldn’t it be fine for 2010 to serve as a major pump-you-up action 10 – 20 years down the line, like some of those games “back in the days”?! (i should say, the first of the decade to serve in this way)

Yo,
I think that lot will probably be pay as you go but you never know.
That’s what sucks about tailgating in foreign territory.
We’ll work it out one way or another.
GO CANEZ!!!!!
Canez1, I think it is best if we stick with our original plan – meet at my hotel at 5:30am and then caravan over. Those who don’t get there early can just join the tailgate later.
Those who have equipment and/or want their cars there need to wake their lazy a$$es up. This isn’t just A GAME. This sh!t is WAR. I don’t recall learning about anyone hitting the snooze button before bombing Hiroshima.
JSQ LMAO!!! You got it. I think that’s a good plan.
CANEZ FO LIFE!!!
GO CANEZ!!!!!
I have to run into a meeting for a while but I will look at the map Patrick sent me and see where that free lot is that Julian is talking about.
Basically, though, I think the best laid plans (exact parking spots) go awry at 5:30am with a bunch of hungover people. We aren’t even going to feel human until our first breakfast sandwich and 10th jello shot. So, I think following each other and finding the best/closest/drama free location as possible should be the plan.
And you will be impressed with Patrick. My buddy can sniff out a good tailgating spot better than Sebastian can find bacon. Dude has skills. Proud to call him a friend. We will be okay as long as we are with him.
Sorry if anyone is opposed to nuclear war. Don’t mean to offend anyone with the Hiroshima reference.
But, for the record, our ‘Canes are going NUCLEAR (or as our former president would say “nuk-lar”) on those suckeye b!tches!

Bobby Bowden interview this AM
Hey. A guy named bg1906 said we were lacking leadership several seasons ago. He even said its said when the freshman are the leaders on the team and the better players. Seems Coach Shannon agrees…
Q: How have the Miami Northwestern guys grown together and how important will they be to this team?
Shannon: They’ve done a nice job. Guys that came in that class really were the leaders of the team back then, but they couldn’t be leaders because they didn’t know how to lead. Over the last three years of those guys playing a lot, going through the conditioning, going through the strength program, understanding what it takes to win and getting in game situations, tough games where nobody would step up and make a play – now they really see what it takes to get it done.

People asking why this year will be different than the last two can read the Orlando Franklin story above for their answer.

Oh, that’s a Bush-ism, right? haha
Ok…now that the fluff is off of fall camp and everyone is excited about the season, it’s time for me to put some perspective into the mix:
This team still doesn’t tackle well.
This team hasn’t had decent specialt teams in years. Kickoffs and kick coverage have been
terrible.
Depth at a few positions is bad. DT, LB, C and TE specifically. I didn’t mention QB because what team can lose their starter? Those positions have numbers but there’s a huge drop off after the starters. Especially at LB. If Cmac or Spence goes down…it’s downhill fast.
So what do you guys say? How does this play into the season.
It’s one week putas!!!!
I broke ut
IT – broke IT
It? I hope you aren’t talking about the same “it” as last night, Truth!
Right, T. And I still want to see them cover TEs, and snag our share of ints. But, no team was hit harder by injuries last year than the U. You could say that 3 of the top 4 DL were out by game 3, etc. If we have no more than our fair share this year, and the oppo does, too, we’ll be OK.
12 of the top 14 were injured at one point or another…if they stay healthy it’s all good
And no, JSQ..IT is fine and working well thank you very much!
I dont see why our o-line would be worse this year than last year.. kinda like fsu’s defense it can only get better after giving up 35 sacks, thats a horrific number

I’m between 32 East and Cabana. I really like Cabana but I tend to go to the same restaurants over and over and it’s good to shake things up a bit!
The Truth says:
August 26, 2010 at 3:39 PM
Like I’ve been saying since the spring and reiterated on the radio show last week, our biggest opponent this year…TEAM HEALTH and our biggest advocated GOOD LUCK. If we are LUCKY and can stay healthy at critical positions we will be as good as advertised, IF we don’t, I’m not even thinking of that scenario!
I like how you think bg!
Why don’t you tell your date to take you for some steak! I hear there are a couple of good ones around there…
Date? Did I say it was a date? Can’t I just make a restaurant inquiry?
I haven’t been to 32 East but from I have heard Truth’s assessment is dead on
Okay, I think I’m going with Cabana or Trattoria or Cut 432. I’m feeling indecisive.
BG, I’ll take those weaknesses as long as we have our strengths. Those are similar weaknesses to a lot of teams, notably the team we play on 9-11 but also FSU, VT and dare I say UNC esp. on the offensive side of the ball.
So I’m not sure this is new news, maybe just the rest of the picture combined with the surprised improvements.
Also, it would be interesting to recall post Fall Camp notes from previous years, such as 2005, 2006 even 2004.
Ok so do you think we push are kids too hard when this poor little boy pitching in the little league world is crying while pitching? I think this is really too much. Let kids be kids.
Coverage and tackling are the dissappointing things. Depth we all knew, so no surprise there.
Out of curiousity I would love to know everyone’s prediction for the season, as it seems we have an optimistic group. I am between 10-2 and 9-3 personally, but I am going to go with 10-2.
Hmmmm…It’s Thursday and a ridiculously hot buxom blonde with a penchant for football facts is looking for restaurant advice for the following night…a Friday…
Of course I’m going to assume it’s for a date! You’re hot!! Someone should be taking you out…
JSQ YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS, HOW CAN ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN LET HER GO OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!

11-1
Canechic, as soon as I saw the title, I clicked back. I had the unfortunate luck to turn the channel to the after show when she was singing one time and it has scarred me for life. I think Sebastian even put his paws over his ears.
I just went through the trouble of changing into a dress and heels (from yoga pants and ‘Canes shirt) and almost put makeup on to realize, why the heck would I get all dolled up to go to a Thursday night jewelry party full of chicks who are all ‘Canes? I’m back in the yoga pants and ‘Canes shirt. F that. I’m not going all out for a bunch of girls!
Talk to y’all later.
If we are hoping for luck to pull us through this season we are FUKKKKKED!
I think we have 3 L’s locked and loaded for this season. Blandy told me so.
CC I think we don’t push these little puzzies hard enough. The pussification of America is in full effect and is very hard to watch.
I was talking to my nieces the other night and they have their men crying like bytchez and asking them every 5 minutes if they love them and care about them. WTF is that about.
One of them broke up with their boyfriend and he went to her parents crying!!!!! WHAT!!!!!
The little dudes growing up are so babied and coddled they aren’t going to know what to do with themselves when they grow up.
It truly is sad to see…….
Sack up little men!

Looking even deeper at the depth
By TIM MAY
My colleague Ken Gordon did a good job hitting the high spots of the first-game Ohio State depth chart released today, and here’s a few more observations.
A – The backup at right tackle is freshman Andrew Norwell, listed behind starter J.B. Shugarts. Coach Jim Tressel and some of the linemen said they were impressed with the way Norwell was picking up the system, and now that’s in black and white.
But remember that Marcus Hall is taking a redshirt year this season as he tries to get his academic situation in order. He would have been at least the backup at one of the two tackle positions, but his problem turned out to be Norwell’s opportunity.
Also remember, though, that Andrew Miller can back up both tackle positions, and he expects his ailing elbow to heal now that the grind of camp is over.
A – Senior Connor Smith has made the depth chart as the backup to left guard Justin Boren, while a couple of promising redshirt-freshmen, Cory Linsley and Jack Mewhort, are the backups at center and right guard, respectively.
In other words, the two-deep of the offensive line includes just four seniors, including Boren, right guard Bryant Browning, and Miller. That bodes well for the Buckeyes of 2011, barring one or more of those juniors leaving early for the NFL.
A – Also noteworthy was Nathan Williams being listed No.1 at defensive end. That’s only because he’s been sidelined since mid-camp with a knee sprain that apparently did not need surgery. Whether he starts the opener a week from tonight against Marshall remains to be seen, but he was expected to be able to return sooner rather than later, which means he likely will be available for the key Sept.11 match with Miami.

Analysis: New depth chart released
Considering the last depth chart we saw was put together in early April, today’s release of the two-deep was much anticipated.
Here it is.
I’ll run through everything that caught my eye:
LEFT TACKLE: Mike Adams over Andrew Miller. I put this down just as a record-keeper, I think we all knew this would be how it came out, particularly with Miller battling an elbow injury. I would have been shocked if it had been flipped. Miller can still overtake this spot, though, if Adams is injured or ineffective.
BACKUP RECEIVER: It appears Taurian Washington is the No. 3 to start, with Chris Fields and Corey “Philly” Brown bracketed as the No. 4/No. 5. Again, no shock, but it’s official that Brown is making a serious push for time. And as we saw last year, one or two drops by Washington, and he could be buried.
KICKING: Devin Barclay is listed first for place-kicks, but that is something that can change on a kick-by-kick basis during the season. Drew Basil starts as the kickoff guy, giving him a regular role, at least, which should keep his head in games in case he’s called on for a field-goal try.
DEFENSIVE LINE: Freshman Jonathan Hankins (or “Big Hank” — look for a story in Friday’s Dispatch) is a backup tackle. Adam Bellamy started camp as a backup tackle, so Hankins’ emergence forced either Bellamy or Garrett Goebel to either move or be third-string. Bellamy played strong-side end in the jersey scrimmage and looked good, so now he starts the year backing up Cameron Heyward at that spot. Bellamy’s versatility helps him, and nagging injuries may have hurt Melvin Fellows’ bid to be in the two-deep. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Fellows overtake Solomon Thomas as the backup at the other end spot, though.
LINEBACKER: The biggest move of camp was Andrew Sweat overtaking Etienne Sabino for the starting strong-side spot. My colleague Tim May had a story in Monday’s paper, strongly hinting this could be the case, and indeed it was. Interesting that Sabino is moved to second-team middle linebacker, bracketed with Storm Klein, while Jon Newsome is the backup strong-side guy. Who’s the fourth linebacker into a game — Sabino, Newsome or Klein? If it’s not Sabino, then that shows you he did not make the progress they expected out of him.
STRONG SAFETY: C.J. Barnett is listed as the starter ahead of Orhian Johnson, who has been pretty solid atop the depth chart all year. I have to believe much of this is because Johnson has been injured lately, but Barnett also has been playing well, so it may be a combination of factors. When Johnson is declared fully healthy, watch what happens here. That’s when we’ll know. It could be that while Johnson is a superior athlete, he’s still a former QB and not instinctive enough on defense to start at this point. And Barnett is from Kurt Coleman’s old high school (Dayton Northmont). Just sayin’……

Post-scrimmage: Emptying the notebook
Unless the schedule changes, we are now entering a dead-news zone. There is no practice access and no interviews scheduled for this week. The next access is Monday, Aug. 30, which will be Jim Tressel’s first game-week press luncheon.
So, in the name of feeding your need for OSU talk in the meantime, here are some final thoughts from the jersey scrimmage that I did not get in:
– Jamie Wood impressed me. As I reviewed my notes, I realized the redshirt freshman safety from Pickerington was very active, mostly in run support. He showed up on the scene a lot, knifing through traffic to make plays.
– Devin Barclay made a 53-yard field goal. This bears mentioning because of his long-range struggles in the past. Now, he did miss a 42-yarder wide left, and he missed a 37-yarder in the kick scrimmage on Aug. 14. But he said he worked on leg strength in the offseason, and I’d say it is paying off. I still like Drew Basil to try the long attempts, but it’s a closer competition than it was two weeks ago.
– The offense ran 14 plays Saturday from the opposing 15-yard line or closer, and those 14 plays gained just 13 yards.
This is a source of concern. Last season, OSU was tied for 84th nationally in red-zone scoring, coming away with points on 37 of 47 trips (78.7 percent). And only 25 of those 37 scores were TDs.
Saturday, here were the 15 plays and their result:
First-and-10 at the 13: Terrelle Pryor sacked, 2-yard loss.
2-12 at the 15: Pryor incomplete.
3-12 at 15: Pryor incomplete.
(4-12, Barclay makes a 32-yard field goal, roughing on defense results in 1st)
1-goal at 7: Pryor incomplete.
2-goal at 7: Herron 0 gain.
3-goal at 7: Pryor incomplete.
(Barclay makes 25-yard field goal)
2-8 at 14: Delande 0 gain.
(3-8 at 14: pass interference called in end zone)
1-goal at 2: Delande 1 gain.
2-goal at 1: Graham sneak 0 gain.
3-goal at 1: Graham fumbles snap, 0 gain.
(4-goal at 1: Basil makes 18-yard field goal)
3-6 at 15: Guiton 9 yard pass to Crawford.
1-goal at 6: Guiton incomplete
2-goal at 6: Guiton incomplete
3-goal at 6: Guiton 5-yard draw
(4-goal at 1: Barclay makes 18-yard field goal)
Some of these were good defensive plays, such as two passes defensed by Jermale Hines and Corey Brown. Another was a drop by Taurian Washington. Those three all came on Pryor passes.
But there was the fumbled snap, a poor decision by Pryor that almost resulted in a Travis Howard interception, and the repeated run-game failures.
Just something to watch as the season gets underway.

David Perry is finally at UM so that would be scholly #85. Latwan is most assuredly a RS candidate now. IF he’s even allowed to come out for the team THIS year.
And just in case you think I’m exaggerating the delusional tendencies of OSU fans, read this comment to the above blog info…

We can always highlight and panic over the negatives of our own team, but whenever we check the stats, we aren’t as bad as we believe… For example, as bad a our KO coverage was last season, we were better than ALOT of teams, including Texas, Florida, Ga. Tech and the biggest deal of all is that Alabama wasn’t even ranked… And Va. Tech is only ranked 4 spots ahead of us in KO yardage allowed… Basically, you can win with bad KO coverage and:
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/ncaa-m-footbl-fbs-team-kickoff-return-yardage-defense.html
As far as not being able to tackle, thats never a good thing but last year, we only allowed 3.5 YPC… That actually put us ahead of Ga. Tech, Va. Tech, and Clemson (who cares about Clemson?) and the were arguably the top teams in the league last season… So last season, the problem was mainly that we COULD NOT GET OFF THE FIELD ON THIRD DOWNS… I don’t remember a lot of missed tackles as much as I remember guys running wide open on 3rd downs…
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/ncaa-m-footbl-fbs-team-rushing-defense.html
Beyond that, I think most teams have weaknesses at some positions behind their starters… Its hard to create quality depth at EVERY single position… I’m glad we have it in some/most spots and I think we’ll be better this year than we were last year… If our defense gets A LITTLE BIT better than we were last year, our team will be as advertised!!!
Thats just my honest opinion… GO CANES!!
Oh, and FAMU is 10x’s worse in 2010 than they were in 2009!!!

Yep. We might as well forfeit cause everyone else is loaded like it’s 2001. No depth, no tacklers, an injured QB, WRs can’t catch or run…..hahaha….stay tuned
Stats are bullsh*t. In big games and in big moments in games Miami gave up TONS of yards on kickoffs.

It was the U way when Shannon took over and now in year four we can finally see exactly what it takes and how long it takes to right the ship. Not that we don’t have history to show us almost exactly how long it takes.
And the reason we overcame whatever obstacles there were was because we had players who knew how to do just that. That just doesn’t happen by chance.
It’s funny, people see what Coker did to the program, then see how Shannon has labored mightily to reverse the direction but despite success it’s still Coker’s reputation because we haven’t won everything with underclassmen as the tea leaders and the only playmakers on the team.
The we suddenly don’t have depth like 2000, something we know, and the season is worthless. lol
What happens to OSU, VT, TX and FSU is their starting QB goes down? lol
And how can Bob Stoops get up on ESPN and prattle on about how much better his team is this year compared to last year because he has so many underclassmen who got experience last year BUT somehow Shannon can’t do the same thing…
Wait, didn’t we BEAT Oklahoma last year, just two years after they embarrassed us?? Nah. That was just a mirage.
haha
Stay tuned.
Truth, is Fluzzi THAT important to recruiting and TEs that he can’t be replaced by someone who can coach STs for real???
Seriously, this year he’ll have a bunch of DBs and LBs, underclassmen and upperclassmen, with tons of speed, so what gives?
Here’s what we do no, stats or no stats, we have a better group of offensive talent collectively than i’d say any team in the country, so i can see why our defense is having problems tackling them. It won’t just be our defense having problems tackling our offense this year. As far as our defense be able to tackle, last year i’m thinking about the so called big games, we did good tackling against g-tech, oklahoma, didn’t do to bad against clemson, they basically had alot of big passing plays as oppose to us having tackling problems. Against unc when it counted, we just didn’t stop their running game, it wasn’t bad tackling, that had more to do with gus just getting off blocks fast enuff. Against wisconsin, the tackling wasn’t bad, it was more technique and just getting out muscled. and in the rain/cold game, combination of everything did us in that day.
So we’ll see if it’s a combination of our defense going against a real legit offense, because the good news is, everything that seems like an area of improvement, i didn’t see anything on the offensive side of the ball. I’m sure we’ll need to be able to pass block a whole lot better though.
The years not over @ 10-2. I figure us 11-2 or 11-3. (Up 2 more Ws in RS’s progression.)
just won tickets for the FSU game thank you Kirby now I like you

cav, you know what’s funny, has nothing to do with the current team either, but i was just thinking back to when brian blades said he was the SEAN TAYLOR of his day, lol, while we all for the most part knew what he was trying to say, i wanna tell em, dawg, you ain’t never, and never will be a SEAN TAYLOR! Not even close, the more and more and more i think about it, the more and more that statement gets more ridiculous. I haven’t seen a safety yet, that can be compared to SEAN TAYLOR! ed reed is ed reed, and SEAN TAYLOR stood by himself as well. The funny thing is, ed reed and SEAN TAYLOR would’ve gone down as arguably the 2 best safeties t oever play the game, the only argument would have been who was better between those 2.
cav, fluzzi is a good tight-ends coach, our tight-ends when used, have been productive, epps, we know what graham did, and now we got chase ford and asante cleveland doing decent right now. So on that front, we gotta leae em alone. doc ibis did a good job throwing out that research he found about our special teams. All i know is, from this year on, is where a true observation of this team can be critique. I expect guys to make plays against each other in practice, and with the talent we have, again, our defense won’t be the only defense having trouble tackling these guys.
Steals the king?

I agree that our KO Coverage wasn’t great but what does that say about everybody ranked below us?
The fact that out of 108 teams, the Nat’l Champs ‘Bama aren’t even ranked…. Out of 108 teams, Bama was at best, 109th and still won it all… This leads to me believe that its less about KO Coverage and more about the defense not giving up anything after the other team starts the drive at the 40…
Think about the Ga. Tech game…. Those b*stards started d*mn near EVERY drive on the 40 and couldn’t do sh!t with it…. Our defense was on that night, so basically, as long as our defense is on, we’ll be fine…
With that being said, KO coverage almost cost us the FSU game and it did cost us the Clemson game… But the thing about it is, consider the games where we gave up big return yardage and that means there must have been alotta games where we didn’t give up anything on KOs because we are right in the thick of it when talking about KO Coverage teams…
FSgay tickets arrived today.. Pitt tix where ya at????

Personally…I think that’s f@cking stupid. We didn’t steal him – he came here to play with his best friend.
Dumb shirt. I’d rather have the title and OSU didn’t steal it.
Terry Porter did
I hear you Doc…
And I know the stats didn’t look SO bad, but realistically, who cares about the teams below u’s? You know? They can’t win games for us. Better kick off coverage can…and in big time situations it’s failed.
That HAS to improve.
I only thee it out there because it’s not all roses with this team. I DO think the ST’s issues will be corrected. Randy has personally put a lot of time in to focus on it.
I AM worried about poor tackling with this team. It’s been my experience and I’ve seen it enough to know that you either have a group that can tackle or you don’t. It’s taught…they go through the drills but that’s pee wee and HS stuff. At this level tackling needs to be entrenched.
I don’t think it is.
It’s not horrible. But if there’s a tight game and the RB from VT is one on one with Spence or Telemaque are they going to whiff?
And I’m DYING to go on a cruise!
I was once given the challenge, as a newly single guy, to hit the clubs on the beach and do it to Snookie.
I knew that wouldn’t happen. I am:
A) Not on steroids
B) not on par mental with moss
But…watching Jersey Shore I wondered:
Could I do it?
Ummmmm…no. I’d put it in the other girls. In fact, Sammy is actually really cute. Jwoww is f-ing psycho but in bed that can be a good thing – and she has a nice body.
But snookie HAS to be from another planet. She is like an alien life form. I wouldn’t even know where to start. On top of that, she’s 4’10…I would definitely break her in half.
It could just never happen.
So why am I think about this?
Who the F@CK would EVER have sex with get???!!!!! And actually call her his girlfriend??!!!

Florida’s Urban Meyer says top freshmen Powell, Easley ‘all good’ after skipping practice
Share
Mark my words, the Turds lose three games this season.
MARK LONG
AP Sports Writer

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida freshmen Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley were back at practice Thursday, two days after skipping part of a session and setting off speculation they would transfer.
Coach Urban Meyer said Thursday that the highly touted defensive linemen are “all good.”
“They’re doing great,” Meyer said. “Our freshman class is doing great. I keep hearing this and I keep hearing that. Everything’s in good shape.”
Meyer acknowledged that Powell and Easley missed part of practice Tuesday, but he refused to say why or whether they were excused.
Click here to get breaking sports news text alerts
Rumors swirled the last two days about their absence, with talk ranging from the players being upset about getting yelled at during practice to them asking for their release and planning to transfer.
“No. No, no, no, no, no. Never,” Meyer said. “The transfer word never came out of their mouths. They’re good.”
Powell, a defensive end from Moreno Valley, Calif., was considered the nation’s top recruit. Easley, a defensive tackle from New York, was another five-star prospect. Together, they helped give Florida what many considered the nation’s top class.
Nonetheless, the class hasn’t received rave reviews. Meyer expressed concern about his team Monday, in part because none of the freshmen has taken over a starting role during training camp.
Powell and Easley made it clear earlier this month that they planned to play significant snaps this fall. Easley even compared himself, Powell and fellow newcomer Sharrif Floyd to Miami’s trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
That confidence seemingly didn’t sit well with some of the upperclassmen.
“Everybody has to come in with that attitude,” center Mike Pouncey said Tuesday. “At the end of the day, they’re freshmen. They just need to shut their mouths and come play. They haven’t done nothing on Saturday. Most of the fans don’t even know who they are. Until they prove themselves, they need to sit back and let the older guys play.”

Revenge Game! Lets get it! C-A-N-ES!
Truth, i was complaining about VT’s tackling last year.
Wow. Burney? Thats big.
Sam Shields!
I know you were Esteban…I appreciate the big GT hit but he missed more than a couple. Not just him either…but he’s a good start.
Shields with another INT.
Jon Gruden said he makes the 53- man roster, no sweat.
So what’s up with green bay dropping 59 in a preseason game?
I’m really happy for Sam Shields. A team first guy. It’s great to see him playing well.
Shields Coverage was great on that play!
+1 Randy for the switch.
Esteban, yeah I was shocked at seeing Burney’s name also especially since he was so big in the matchup agaInst UM last year.
Did you guys see Addai get blown up trying to make that tackle?
T
Believe it or not Snooki is a lot better lookin’ in person …. but still a wack job notheless. Trust me on this.. LOL

I got one question about this whole UNC thing. Are all of the players that are currently being investigated allowed to play next week? Or do they have to sit out and let this thing clear?
Good find, Uchamps.
I have to change my article for tomorrow
Ronny, they won’t play
Wow, the Luckeyes are trashing the Canespundit board. Can’t believe he let them do that. I’m guessing he saves it for ish talk after the Canes spank them in the sandle on 9/11
Vt was definitely the worst tackling game last year but I can’t imagine this team being as bad or out of place as last year, or even the year before. OU, GT and the others were solid, considering who we had making the tackles out there.
It honestly seemed like a mental situation. They were great when focused and average when not focused. There’s a game to demonstrated each mental state. So the consistency and finishing are the next steps.
We’ll see Thursday.
Cal, yeah Benny was more than a little full of himself if he said he was the Sean Taylor of his day. But the fact that he said that about a player who came AFTER him tells the whole story. He didn’t say, Sean Taylor was the Benny Blades of those teams. haha
Taylor’s really one of those Lawrence Taylor, Bo Jackson types. He definitely would’ve redefined the safety position in the League. Ray Ray doesn’t have the speed, the range that Taylor did. I don’t think he’ll be able to acquire that but he has the mentality and the hitting. He and VT will be a good facsimile of a Reed Taylor duo back there.
The main thing I want to see from this team, and what I expect more of, is the speed of pursuit and execution. It’s impossible to tell from practice reports but watching the 2000, 2001 teams really sheds light on just what it’s supposed to look like. And it won’t matter who the opponent is. So we’ll know by how they play against FAMU if Hurricane Football is back or still not quite back. Last year’s FAMU game was embarrassing to be honest, esp. the OL play.
But Cap, we put up like 30 something on FAMU in the first half… I mean, we could’ve scored 70 points on thos guys… The most disappointing thing about that game was that Jacory threw those two picks… One was on the goal line marching in and was really costly… Without those two picks, he wouldn’t have been the “talk” of the young QB with alotta potential world…
And Truth, I appreciate what the info… I like to know where we are weak but if we were able to put together a 5 game win streak in 2008 with young guys and nobodies, and then have a pretty good season in 2009 with young guys that could all play for the most part, I’m kinda anxious to see what we’ll look like even with a few weaknesses…
Just a question: As long as you’ve been around the program, has there ever been a squad that was solid in all phases of the game and had depth at every position? I know 2001-2004 were real good but I’m just curious as to how good…

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — LeBron James went back to school Thursday, working out against the Miami Hurricanes.
The NBA’s two-time reigning MVP and some of his new Miami Heat teammates made a surprise stop at the university’s basketball facility for some informal scrimmaging against the Hurricanes. James, Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Patrick Beverley and New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul — a close friend of James — played pickup for more than an hour.
“Just left ‘The U’ hooping with the team … Great runs! Needed that,” James posted on Twitter after the workout session.
Some of Miami’s players hadn’t been told beforehand that James and his crew would be popping in for a workout. James and the NBA players, including injured Heat guard Mario Chalmers, stayed afterward to pose for pictures.
It’s not uncommon to see NBA players working out on Miami’s campus, especially those who maintain offseason homes in South Florida. As far as the Hurricanes know, Thursday marked the first time James came for a visit since joining the Heat nearly two months ago.
“No question, it’s great having those guys here,” Miami coach Frank Haith said. “It’s a great influence for our players. They’re some of the greatest players in the NBA, so it’s obviously great for our guys and our program.”
James had a variety of eye-popping dunks during the pickup games, which were played without an audience — and with no video.
The Hurricanes hope to see plenty more of James, who has also been invited to see a Miami football game from its sideline anytime he wants — even if that happens to be Sept. 11, when the nation’s No. 13 team travels back to James’ homeland to face No. 2 Ohio State.
And if he wants to see a Miami football practice, that’s fine with the Hurricanes as well.
James created a buzz in Cleveland last season after saying he could be “really good” if he committed to playing football, and Browns coach Eric Mangini make a half-serious offer for the 6-foot-8, 260-pound forward to “come on down” to work out with the NFL club.
“You need to come out to the football field and show ur skills for us,” Hurricanes defensive back DeMarcus Van Dyke wrote to James on Twitter as news spread of the MVP’s visit to campus.

ALL teams have weaknesses. I was just pointing out this teams as a means to discuss something other than stupid Curious Dubya and dumb Obama.
Just because I think the Canes have weaknesses doesn’t mean I don’t think the Canes win 11 this year.
Because I think they win 11
Shields looked great from what I hear. Missed most of the game, but did manage to see him make a great pass breakup while Manning was still in the game, and obviously the pick…here’s what the Mil Journal Sentinel says this morning:
“The Green Bay Packers played the closest thing to a regular-season football game Thursday night, and it gave them a chance to find out quite a bit about which players fighting for jobs belong in the National Football League. And, for that matter, which ones don’t.
General manager Ted Thompson will make the final call on who makes it and who doesn’t, but he would have to be blind not to notice the play of a couple of players.
Punter Tim Masthay, rookie safety Morgan Burnett, rookie linebacker Frank Zombo and rookie cornerback Sam Shields solidified themselves as legitimate prospects with strong performances in a 59-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field.
. . . .
Shields, who is still learning the finer points of playing cornerback after being mostly a receiver and special teams player at Miami, continued to show why he deserves to make the team. On the opening kickoff, he did a good job of funneling the return inside, on punt coverage he was able to get downfield without too much trouble and on defense he broke up three passes, including a late interception against backup quarterback Curtis Painter.”
Can’t wait to watch the game on dvr. Apparently he did completely blow coverage on 1 play, but again, dude is a rookie with 1 year of cb experience. Plus, the 2 guys that are expected to take over for Woodson and Harris in the next couple of years are NOT impressing so far this preseason. If Shields can learn the position, he could become a starter in the next couple seasons.
Truth not to mention that hair do she wears is absolutely horrific!
Green Bay was on fire last night!
It’s the most wonderful tiiiiiiiime of the Yeaaaaaar.
Six days Bytchez!
GO CANEZ!!!!!

I know you’ve been pretty confident the whole time… Its good to hear you reaffirm it though… So are you feeling 11 wins with 3 losses or 11 wins with 2 losses… Basically, ACC Ship or no?
I’m still curious though because as a kid, I just knew the Hurricanes were good… I know back then we had great players on all three levels of defense but as far as weaknesses, I didn’t know much about depth and pass rush and all of that stuff
…and I just found out I might not be able to get to the game next Thursday until AFTER kickoff!!!!!!
Not happy.
I need an exit strategy.
