Eye of the Hurricane Season Preview: Games 7-12

7. North Carolina Tar Heels

Saturday, October 23, TBA, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)

Coach – Butch Davis (20-18 in 3 seasons at UNC, 71-38 in 9 total seasons)

2009 Record – 8-5, 4-4 ACC  2009 Bowl Game – Meineke Car Care Bowl vs. Pittsburgh (L, 17-19)

Returning Starters – 19* (10 offense, 9 defense, kicker and punter)

Key Offensive Players – WR Greg Little, Sr., TE Zach Pianalto, Sr., WR Jheranie Boyd, So., QB TJ Yates, Sr., RB Shaun Draughn, Sr., WR Erik Highsmith, So.

Key Defensive Players – DE Robert Quinn, Jr., DT Marvin Austin, Sr., DT Tydreke Powell, Jr., SLB Bruce Carter, Sr., WLB Quan Sturdivant, Sr., FS Deunta Williams, Sr., CB Kendric Burney, Sr., CB Charles Brown, Sr.

2010 Outlook: The Tar Heel defense has the potential to be very good this season. It’s stockpiled with future NFL talent. No one doubts the talent level defensively; it’s the offense that gives the coaching staff and fans heartburn. Sr. QB TJ Yates is the model of inconsistency, owning a 14/15 TD to INT ratio last season. North Carolina has a pair of sophomore receivers that could be all conference performers, but questions at quarterback will likely prevent that.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Miami had relative success moving the ball on North Carolina last year in Chapel Hill. Ultimately, untimely interceptions thrown by Jacory Harris that were returned for touchdowns sealed UM’s fate. With the game in Miami, expect a near sellout and spirited effort from the ‘Canes. The men clad in orange and green must find a way to be productive offensively. If not, it could be a long day.

*Starting DT Marvin Austin and WR Greg Little are currently under NCAA investigation for receiving improper benefits. Until they are cleared by the NCAA, they will not participate in games. Also, the NCAA investigation into the UNC program has widened to include academic improprieties. Several other defensive starters are said to be the in the center of the new  investigation. If this is in fact the case, this will negatively impact the Tar Heels ability to play defense and they won’t be near the competition they would have been. Stay tuned for details regarding this story.

8. Virginia Cavaliers

Saturday, October 30, TBA, Scott Stadium (61,500 capacity)

Coach – Mike London, 1st season (24-5 in 2 seasons at Richmond, 2008 FCS National Champion)

2009 Record – 3-9, 2-6 ACC  2009 Bowl Game – N/A

Returning Starters – (6 offense, 6 defense, kicker and punter)

Key Offensive Players – LG Austin Pasztor, Jr., G BJ Cabbell, Sr.

Key Defensive Players – CB Ras-I Dowling, Sr., DT Matt Conrath, Jr., ILB Steve Greer, So., DT Nick Jenkins, Jr.

2010 Outlook: Bleak. New head coach Mike London is moving from the spread offense to a pro-style attack and switching the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3. The Cavaliers drew Florida St. and Boston College from the Atlantic Division and face USC in Los Angeles (9/11). It’ll be tough for Virginia to get to three wins, and the coaching staff has a tough rebuilding job in front of them.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Miami has too much talent for Virginia to hang around for long. A Cavalier victory would be the upset of the year. UM will score points in bunches, and Randy Shannon will dip into his depth chart to give some meaningful minutes to backups. This game won’t be close.

9. Maryland Terrapins

Saturday, November 6, TBA, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)

Coach – Ralph Friedgen (66-46 in 9 seasons)

2009 Record – 2-10, 1-7 ACC  2009 Bowl Game – N/A

Returning Starters – 12 (7 offense, 5 defense, kicker and punter)

Key Offensive Players – RB Da’Rel Scott, Sr., WR Torrey Smith, Jr.

Key Defensive Players – MLB Alex Wujciak, Sr., SS Antwine Perez, Sr., FS Kenny Tate, Jr., WLB Demetrius Hartsfield, So., SLB Adrian Moten, Sr.

2010 Outlook: Injuries and youth plagued the Terps last season, but there is still too much work to be done to consider them a threat to much of the ACC. Coach Friedgen needs to return to a bowl game to save his job, but questions at QB and along both lines will prevent a major improvement. Maryland could be slightly improved, but not enough. Qualifying for a bowl game should be considered a helluva coaching job.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Miami should have no problems scoring on Maryland. This will be another case of too much speed and talent that will overwhelm the opposition. Don’t sweat the outcome of this game. The ‘Canes should win comfortably.

10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 2009 ACC Champions

Saturday, November 13, TBA, Bobby Dodd Stadium (55,000 capacity)

Coach – Paul Johnson (20-7 in 2 seasons at Georgia Tech, 127-46 in 13 seasons. 1999 and 2000 FCS National Champions at Georgia Southern)

2009 Record – 11-3, 8-1 ACC  2009 Bowl Game – Orange Bowl vs. Iowa (L, 14-24)

Returning Starters – 14 (6 offense, 8 defense, kicker and punter)

Key Offensive Players – QB Josh Nesbitt, Sr., BB (fullback) Anthony Allen, Sr., AB (pitch man) Marcus Wright., Jr., AB (pitch man) Roddy Jones, Jr., C Sean Bedford, Sr.

Key Defensive Players – MLB Brad Jefferson, Sr., CB Mario Butler, Sr., FS Mario Edwards, Sr.,

2010 Outlook: Talk about being disrespected. The Yellow Jackets return 14 starters from last year’s 2009 ACC Championship team. They did, however, lose four critical underclassmen to the NFL Draft. Had BB Jonathan Dwyer, WR Demaryius Thomas, SS Morgan Burnett, and DE Derrick Morgan stayed in Atlanta, Georgia Tech likely would have been touted to be a national championship contender and would have been the favorite to repeat as ACC Champ. As it stands, Tech will still compete for the ACC Crown. The Yellow Jackets have been to 13 straight bowl games and expect that streak to continue.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – If the ‘Canes can recreate the defensive effort from last year, Miami should win this game. If anyone in the ACC knows how to prepare for and stop the option attack, its Randy Shannon. Just reference last year’s performance by the defense which held the Yellow Jackets potent running attack to 95 yards. This game is on the road, and UM will need to be ready and focused to leave Atlanta with a victory.

11. Virginia Tech Hokies

Saturday, November 20, TBA, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)

Coach – Frank Beamer (187-92-2 in 23 season at Virginia Tech, 229-115-4 in 29 seasons)

2009 Record – 10-3, 6-2 ACC  2009 Bowl Game – Chick-fil-A (Peach Bowl) vs. Tennessee (W, 37-14)

Returning Starters – 12 (8 offense, 4 defense)

Key Offensive Players – QB Tyrod Taylor, Sr., RB Ryan Williams, So., RB Darren Evans, Jr., WR Jarrett Boykin, RT Blake DeChristopher, Jr., G Beau Warren, Sr.

Key Defensive Players – CB Rashad Carmichael, Sr., DT John Graves, Sr., LB Barquell Rivers, Jr.

2010 Outlook: Defense, special teams, and a solid running game. That’s what comes to mind when you think of Virginia Tech. The running game will show up this season with two All-American types toting the rock for the Hokies. But this year might be a little different. They have an inexperienced kicker and punter, and only return four defensive starters. But one has to expect that the kicking game and defense won’t be the weaknesses that the media is expecting because they are well coached. The passing attack is more explosive this year, and if Virginia Tech challenges for the ACC title, it’ll be on the backs of Sr. QB Tyrod Taylor and his talented stable of running backs.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Payback will be on everyone’s mind. Virginia Tech presents perhaps UM’s biggest obstacle en route to the Coastal Division crown. The Hokies are well coached, rarely make mistakes that beat themselves, and possess excellent special teams play. That formula is difficult to overcome when executed, and Miami will rely on Jacory Harris to lead them to victory. This could be a high scoring affair.

12. South Florida Bulls

Saturday, November 27, TBA, Sun Life Stadium (75,000 capacity)

Coach – Skip Holtz (1st season, 72-50 overall in 10 seasons)

2009 Record – 8-5, 3-4 Big East  2009 Bowl Game – International Bowl vs. Northern Illinois (W, 27-3)

Returning Starters – 15 (10 Offense, 5 defense, kicker)

Key Offensive Starters – QB BJ Daniels, So., RB Moise Plancher, Sr., WR Dontavia Bogan, Sr., C Sampson Genus, Sr.

Key Defensive Players – CB Kayvon Webster, So., CB Quenton Washington, Jr., DT Terrell McClain, Sr., MLB Sam Barrington, So.

2010 Outlook: USF is projected in the bottom half of the Big East this season. They have the talent to return to the postseason, but contests at Florida, Miami, West Virginia, and Cincinnati will make the road difficult. Head coach Skip Holtz has a rebuilding job ahead of him, but he does reside in a recruiting hotbed, and eventually can get the Bulls over the hump and turn USF into Big East Champs.

Eye of the Hurricane’s Forecast – Miami shouldn’t have too much difficulty in overcoming the Bulls this season. There are no proven playmakers on offense and attrition on defense will prove crippling. This is a program to watch in the coming seasons, but Miami should have a lot to play for in this game, and USF isn’t ready to challenge the mighty ‘Canes just yet.

Florida’s Urban Meyer says top freshmen Powell, Easley ‘all good’ after skipping practice

Mark my words, the Turds lose three games this season.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida freshmen Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley were back at practice Thursday, two days after skipping part of a session and setting off speculation they would transfer.

Coach Urban Meyer said Thursday that the highly touted defensive linemen are “all good.”

“They’re doing great,” Meyer said. “Our freshman class is doing great. I keep hearing this and I keep hearing that. Everything’s in good shape.”

Meyer acknowledged that Powell and Easley missed part of practice Tuesday, but he refused to say why or whether they were excused.

Rumors swirled the last two days about their absence, with talk ranging from the players being upset about getting yelled at during practice to them asking for their release and planning to transfer.

“No. No, no, no, no, no. Never,” Meyer said. “The transfer word never came out of their mouths. They’re good.”

Powell, a defensive end from Moreno Valley, Calif., was considered the nation’s top recruit. Easley, a defensive tackle from New York, was another five-star prospect. Together, they helped give Florida what many considered the nation’s top class.

Nonetheless, the class hasn’t received rave reviews. Meyer expressed concern about his team Monday, in part because none of the freshmen has taken over a starting role during training camp.

Powell and Easley made it clear earlier this month that they planned to play significant snaps this fall. Easley even compared himself, Powell and fellow newcomer Sharrif Floyd to Miami’s trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

That confidence seemingly didn’t sit well with some of the upperclassmen.

“Everybody has to come in with that attitude,” center Mike Pouncey said Tuesday. “At the end of the day, they’re freshmen. They just need to shut their mouths and come play. They haven’t done nothing on Saturday. Most of the fans don’t even know who they are. Until they prove themselves, they need to sit back and let the older guys play.”

Canez1, DANG! Why you so salty? You actually EXPECT to lose 3???!?!?!?!?

That is like being engaged and predicting the marriage will only last 2 years or predicting you will get in a car accident on the way to work. WTF?!

The season hasn’t even begun and you are predicting mediocre performance? You know better than most people what’s going on in practice. You seriously think they won’t be improved? Seriously?!?!!?

I’m going to knock this salty attitude out of you with jello shots and cupcakes. You will be helpless to resist my optimism!!!

The word “Bandwagon,” comes to mind when I read all the negative posts on all the UM blogs, unbelievable.

Randy better do this and he better do that. I find it pathetic and wonder how many of these posters have ever suited up on any level.

Don Bailey Jr. said something last week that really is true, “It is harder than you think, to win a football game.” He hit on two truths here, one, how difficult it is to win a game on the college level and two, that many folks think they know but really don’t.

Hey, I just call it like I see it!

  12. avatar JSQ says:

I wouldn’t go as far to call anyone bandwagon, those folks will come along after we beat Ohio State, but I just don’t understand being negative – about anything, not just football. What is the point? I guess when things don’t work out well you are less disappointed than someone like me but I think that must be a terrible way to live. Expect the best!!! :-D

JSQ not being negative just realistic.

Do I believe we can win every game we are in? No doubt.

Do I think we win every game? Not a chance.

I have seen the same song and dance in the preseason for a LONG time now. I am in show me mode.

    It’s all good sista.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  16. avatar WICane says:

JSQ, thanks again. And, I’m with you. Big optimism for this season. My pessimism is for next year. I think this year we make our statement that we’re officially back on the map as national contenders. But, I don’t have enough kool aid around to think we win the whole thing. My issue is, if we play up to expectations this year, our Seniors and several of our best Juniors might leave us with considerable holes at positions with little to no proven depth. In particular, CB. If Harris leaves early and DVD graduates, we have plenty of bodies, but zero experience and zero proven depth at CB.LB loses Cmac and Krob regardless and nobody else has forced their way onto the field there yet, leaving us 1 experienced LB(I’m assuming of course that regardless of performance this year, Spence is too small to leave early). We will lose Hank, and with a big season, could also lose Byrd, possibly Ald or Benj with major breakout performances that I expect to see. (yes depth but we could lose the cream of the crop) I think this season is huge, but with major success from the key guys this season, we will for the first time in a long time have to face the reality of major pieces of the puzzle leaving early. In 01, we could weather that kind of storm. Right now, the depth is growing, but we can’t simply reload yet if the wrong players leave. With the kind of success I predict this year, we will very soon have this kind of problem again. It’s a great problem to have. But I am not yet certain we have the kind of depth to solve it. That will take a couple more years. My expectations are huge, but if they are met, many guys will be faced with the choice of risking injury for a final year of college ball versus a fat signing bonus.

  17. avatar JSQ says:

You’re my boy, Canez1, and everyone has different perspectives. I just see things a little sunnier!

I will admit, I have been pretty quiet (well, quiet for me, I’m kind of loud and talk a lot so it’s all relative) this pre-season amongst my friends. Maybe it is what happens to someone when they run a blog and talk sports 24/7 but I am just SICK OF TALKING. I want to see it already!

This is also the most confident I have been in this team since 2003.

So maybe I am in show me mode, too. I just think they are going to show me something different than what you are expecting! :-D

  18. avatar JSQ says:

Cool, DAT! I have a couple of decorating/display options to present you two with!

  19. avatar JSQ says:

WI Cane, I have to disagree with you there. I think (1) they won’t all go to the NFL, and (2) there is incredible talent behind them. Randy knows the formula. Just think back in the day how nervous we were when someone went pro or someone got injured and the back up or new guy outperformed his predecessor!

Here, have some kool-aid, I’ve got plenty! ;-)

Orange and Green Kool-aid is the best.

This is the time of year for optimism about what RS and staff have built at the U. Too many people live in the negative tense . Is there not reason for more optimism this year than the last five years. 5, 7, 9 wins each of the last three years building on the next. So what if we have heard it all before, actually what would you expect to hear from a team and staff starting the year. “Well we think we have a chance in 8 of the 12 games we play this year, we are expecting to lose to so and so and so and so, but think we have a chance against these other guys.”

Is that what we want to hear coming from our staff and team? Palease!

The party I was at last night was thrown by a Kappa (my sorority) from UM that graduated before I got there. We were laughing about getting called into “Standards” (think ugly sorority girl c@ck blocking gestapo) for our behavior.

I was called in for dancing to this song at a crush party with a current NFL player who will remain nameless.

I call that “The Time I Got In Trouble for Dropping It Like’s It’s Hot.”

    hahahahahahahahahaha, memories.

  27. avatar Hurricane Randy says:

When the staff and RS tell folks things like, “We are young and lack experience, ” and try to lower expectations or temper fan enthusiasm, then we accuse them of making excuses. If they have positive expectations and don’t win every game, then we say we’ve heard that song and dance before.

They can’t win either way with the negative arguments out there.

  28. avatar JSQ says:

Ronny, everyone thinks I’m crazy, too. Now I think of crazy sh!t to say to make people go “damn, I was kidding but this b!tch really IS crazy!”

Randy, you would have loved hearing Randy on Hurricane Hotline on WQAM last night. This topic was somewhat addressed.

Anyone else listen? Truth, did you make it out to Monty’s to watch it live? I wanted to jump through the radio and strangle the people who didn’t know it was Cortez Kennedy on “Name That ‘Cane” until the 6th clue. Those “fans” need to re-read ‘Cane Mutiny or find another team. Bruce Feldman had all that info in the book!

  31. avatar DATcane says:

    Coastal

    1. Virginia Tech: Loaded on offense. Not so much on defense. Doesn’t matter. I’m betting on any defense that has Bud Foster as its coordinator. Frank Beamer will have to decide how to play his two franchise backs, Darren Evans and Ryan Williams. Tyrod Taylor is an East Coast Terrelle Pryor who must move up to the next level for the Hokies to challenge for a national championship. They can if they beat Boise State in that do-or-die opener. Must-see game: Nov. 20 at Miami. Showdown for Coastal.

    2. Miami (Fla.): You have to assume that Harris will be great. He was merely good in ’09, leading ACC quarterbacks with 3,352 yards. You have to assume that there is a chip on some shoulders after being pushed around by Wisconsin in the bowl game. You have to assume that Miami will again become Miami soon. Will it be this season? Three offensive linemen have to be replaced. The schedule is brutal. Again. If you assume Miami is back then read on … Must-see game: Sept. 11 at Ohio State. You will know if the ‘Canes are back after this one. In a rematch of the 2002 championship game, Miami must at least play well to show that Randy Shannon is making progress.

  32. avatar WICane says:

I’m all optimist this season. Again, anything is possible, even an NC, but I expect well come up short of the NC. Any more kool aid for me and I might o – d.

Maybe kool aid is the wrong metaphor here. My issue is proven talent vs hyped talent. How about: the proof is in the pudding, and if the wrong guys leave early, they’re taking their pudding with them. BHarris is the only individual guy I think might have the opportunity to leave early, that we simply can’t afford to lose. McGee might turn out to be good but he’s shown very little so far, and nobody else has even sniffed the field. All expectations, no pudding. We can play with Harris on one side and inexperience on the other side. 2 total rookie cbs though…thats scary. LB…if nobody young makes a major splash this season, we will have 1 senior in Spence returning with 2 unproven hopefuls. All recruiting-star hype, no pudding. We need at least 1 guy to step up before the end of this year and turn into a stud at LB going into next season. As far as WR, We can lose Hank and Byrd or Hank and any other individual wr. If we lose more than Hank and Byrd early to the NFL, I’ll be very concerned.

  33. avatar JSQ says:

I get what you are saying, WI Cane but that’s what college football is all about – turnover and new, unproven guys getting the opportunity to shine. It’s not like we are the only team who loses its proven players to the NFL and it’s not like Randy Shannon hasn’t had to rebuild a defense when stars leave. I have faith in the process. We will be okay.

In Randy We Trust! GO ‘CANES!

  34. avatar PhillyCane says:

How is Futch behind Cooper in the recovery process when Futch tore his way before Coop?? Maybe I am wrong as I forget which game he tore his knee but to me it shows his lack of commitment to physical theraphy

  35. avatar JSQ says:

Not all knee injuries are the same – do we really know it’s Futch’s lack of commitment?

Also, not making excuses for the guy, but damn, his brother was murdered a few months back, that’s got to pull your focus away.

  36. avatar KLCaneFan says:

“I call that “The Time I Got In Trouble for Dropping It Like’s It’s Hot.” – that’s hilarious!

  37. avatar PhillyCane says:

    Yea I here ya

  38. avatar WICane says:

I think Randy is the guy to put us in a spot where we are reloading every year. I have total faith in him. And, I think that at many positions, the talent of the backups is somewhat proven on the field. But, cb and lb scare me because the youth there is going to hit the field very suddenly, and I haven’t seen a thing to show we’re ready to reload there the way we are at rb, oline, dline, positions where we’re so set that guys will be eased into the rotation every year. But we could actually wind up playing true freshmen at 2 lb positions and 2 cb positions next year for all we know. That would be a disaster. (it was fine a couple years ago, but we’re ready to compete!) So, I want to see some guys hit the field this year and prove they can play because if they can’t, thats potentially 4 very big holes on the D. If nobody emerges, we don’t even play for the ACC title next year, let alone take the next step. That will be a huge letdown after we win the ACC this year!

  39. avatar shwarma says:

I guess Futch is still banged up pretty good too since that article said he will miss the first game. LBs need to walk around in a bubble. As Truth said all about the depth.

In terms of expectations, positivity, negativity, etc. I agree with Canez, as its show me time. I mean I say 2 L’s (one OOC and one ACC) .

And lets make something else clear, not saying a team will go 12-0 pre-season doesn’t mean your not on the bandwagon it could just mean you have certain reservations, which if tied to a real reason is fair.

  40. avatar DATcane says:

1 single injury @ LB and we are f@cked

KL, I got in trouble ALL THE TIME in my sorority. It’s funny because in the other sororities, I would have been that nerdy girl who gets the 4.0. In Kappa, I was THE BAD GIRL. Most of it was for stuff I didn’t even do but for what another sorority (Canechic, it’s Nicole’s sorority, hahahaha) was making up about me!

I’ll have to tell you “The Time I Almost Got Kicked Out of My Sorority For Drinking at The Rat” at a tailgate sometime. It’s funnier because the guys I was drinking with at the Rat that afternoon are my tailgate buddies/in my tailgate buddies’ fraternity.

There’s also “The Time I Got In Trouble For Supposedly Doing Something on a Bus Coming Back From a Sigma Chi Mixer With Guys WHO WERE NOT EVEN AT THE MIXER.”

It wasn’t so funny 8-10 years ago but now, IT’S HILARIOUS!

My mom always said, if people spend all their time and energy thinking about you, talking about you, and tying to take you down, you must be doing something right!

  42. avatar JSQ says:

Shwarma, I don’t think we have any bandwagon people here. Bandwagon is what happens next. The people on here are loyal, die-hard fans.

Some of us are just a little more “glass half full” than others.

    I say 1 loss but I won’t cry over 2.

Actually, I will, but you know what I mean.

I think we should put a pool of $$$ together to have protective detail surrounding the LBs at all times.

    NO DOUBT!!!

I am positive that comment was not directed towards me so I decided to ignore it.

My 2010 reservations stem from the following.

1)Bradford and Gresham well for the OU game we get our doors blown off.

    2)VT…….Nuff said

3)We continue to find ways to lose to inferior teams (UNC, VT, Clemson, Wisconsin)

4)Wisconsin bytch slapped us the last game of the year. They came to play and we did not. They out coached and outplayed a better team. Props to them.

4 solid reasons throughout the season to be reserved in my expectations this year.

Of course that was last year and we SHOULD be improved but until I see it with my own eyes I will continue to temper my expectations.

Not sure why this upsets some people. Who the fukk cares what I think.

You don’t see me bashing anyones views on us going undefeated and being the best team ever, do you?? Then do me a favor and let me have mine. Thanks

Whatever you want to think go nuts. I feel like I am on some religious whack job website and if you are not down with OUR religion and OUR God you are WRONG and going to HELL!!!

    Chill with that shyte.

Bottom line this is an above average team right now with serious holes and unproven talent with the POTENTIAL to be a good one.

All that being said I will go in to every game this year believing we should win. Always have and always will.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

KL, I wish I had the same perspective then that I have now. I let those fugly b!tches make me miserable. I wouldn’t leave my dorm room for weeks (except to go to class) after that Sigma Chi mixer rumor. What a waste of time!

And my dinner companion tonight was sitting next to me on that bus ride from the Sigma Chi mixer. We laugh about that story all the time NOW. I joke that I had special “ho skills” and had to be a “Star Trek ho” because I could just BEAM PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT EVEN AT THE MIXER up to [ahem] them. Hilarious NOW, one of the most mortifying experiences then. Those girls actually made up “Rumors of the Week” about me. I think they did it by playing scategories at their chapter meetings and decided what the rumor would be by majority vote:

  51. avatar WICane says:

Bandwagoners are usually late to the party and easy to spot. If we upset OSU and people you’ve never heard of start commenting here as if they knew it would happen all along, they will be beyond obvious. Where were they when the debate raged on about who would win this spot or how our Dline has improved in order to stand up to a physical Big10 oline after we failed to do so in December? People here who enjoy an orange and green kool aid on occasion or who exercise a bit of cautious optimism should never be the problem. People who know very little about the team, watch the Canes win a single big game and then read an article and become instant experts are easy to spot, but they won’t rear their ugly heads until we do something big.

That’s what I’ve been trying to tell y’all. They gave up 507 yards to FRESNO STATE last year, 250 on the ground, with 240 and three TDs coming from one player.

I’ll see your healthy OU players and trade for healthy Spence & J12. We lose to OU but beat Clemson & NC, and maybe even Wisc. Injuries are part of the game.
The players know they came off a high after GT and blew VT. Our starters know better this year. That’s why I’m glad we have 12 days before Pitt. No matter how OSU turns out, we’ll need the time to get refocussed.

So when the success comes suddenly people will say how great a coach he is.

    U worry too much WICane.

The CBA negotiations with the NFL will keep players in school this next offseason. Also I don’t think we are going to win a ‘ship this year, it’s just so very hard to do. This will help us keep some of our draft eligible players as Randy is recruiting people who are here to accomplish something.

Even if Byrd and Benjamin (he has kids and mouths to feed) decide to go early we still got, AJ, KT, Davon Johnson, Streeter, Hurns & that walk-on that Aubrey Hill is high on, Ben Bernbeau? Not to mention the frshmen coming in.

I don’t know why your worried at LB. We’ll have Spence, Cookie, Futch and then huge quantities of numbers of potential players. Some will rise to the top.

At CB IF Brandon Harris goes pro it will leave us a little thin. I don’t think he will go though because he didn’t EE, wanting to enjoy his full high school years (prom etc…) and think he’ll be the same way in regards to college. Also not winning the NC will motivate him to come back as well as the fact that he might get drafted and then be locked out of training camp as the NFL has some serious issues facing it.

Say I’m wrong and he does go pro. Then we need McGee to take the next step (which I think he will) and we need at least two of the freshmen to step up and shine. Whether that is Latwan Anderson or Devonta Davis or an incoming frosh for next year (Albert Jean-Luis?). Also our d-line will be sick as far as rushing the quarterback which will make the back seven all the more effective. You can get an average corner to guard like an all star if the opposing qb only has two seconds to throw the ball.

    >>>>>>>

Bro, there’s the problem right there. NONE of the teams we lost to last year were inferior. In fact we manhandled the inferior teams for the most part.

Like I said, either you see the chicken-sht leftover from Coker, like Pipho, Javariss, Sharpton, Joseph, Holmes etc…and call it for what it is…..and see that reflected in our up and down, inconsistent play

    OR

You think they’re better than they actually were.

You can’t have it both ways by saying Javarris sucked 80% of the time then say we lost to an inferior team, Clemson, Wisky, who clearly had BETTER players than we did.

That’s my only problem with what you’re saying.

We had AVERAGE talent, DUKE level or below, and played accordingly for the most part.

Then when Shannon’s recruits came in the Ws increased and ALL the playmakers were freshmen.

So if that’s the problem it’s just a matter of maturity. Show me a team that won 9 games with 8 or 9 true freshmen or sophomores STARTING on both sides of the ball, and 18 in the two deep.

    IT DOES NOT HAPPEN.

And don’t say it’s making excuses when you just said we had average players. That’s not an excuse bro, that’s the fact.

  103. avatar WICane says:

DZ, I’m an atty……so I guess I’m just naturally cynical.(not sure how JSQ gets around that!) Just based on that, I’m pretty surprised I’m able to be so confident about this season, let alone only find fault with LB and CB for next season. I should add TE to that. I hope you and JSQ are right, but I won’t feel comfortable until some of the guys you mention actually emerge on the field. I love reading about how they look in practice, and am slightly interested in what kind of hype they brought with them from high school….but until they play some real minutes, I remain unconvinced. For ex, last year in the preseason, the entire Packers oline looked like it would go to the pro bowl, and during the season they nearly set an nfl record for sacks given up. So, I’m glad guys like Manny are reporting similarities between Chase Ford and Jeremy Shockey, but when it comes to guys that haven’t played yet, until I see them do it in a real game, those reports hold about as much water as Kyle Wright’s 5 stars. Whenever I assume the backups will come out as if they’re all americans, I am inevitably disappointed. I need some positive evidence of their talent before I can have any confidence in them. I do have confidence in Randy though. If anyone is the right person to put the right talent in place, it’s him, but I just am incapable of assumign all will go well at the positions where these guys have NEVER seen the field before.

  104. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Clemson had 8 or 9 players last year who would’ve come to the U and started.

Wisky probably the same esp on OL and DL. UNC maybe just five or six. VT probably had 8 last year.

Hell, FSU probably had 8 if you count the OL, Ponder maybe one of their RBs and Forston.

This year, of the teams we’ll play it’ll be interesting to see if they have any player who would walk in and start. Probably Heyward from OSU opposite Bailey. Maybe one of Clemson’s DL. Ellington would most likely crack the three deep, I don’t know if he would start.

FSU? No one. Wisky?? Probably an OL or two, maybe a DL. UNC, probably a DL and a LB and that big RB would be interesting.

But y’all get the point. The talent gap is closed for the most part and quickly shifting to our advantage. On offense it’s already there. Defense and OL are a little behind.

Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see who stays and goes. I definitely be surprised if Byrd leaves. I still think he has a lot of room to grow in college before he takes the leap. Plus, I think he and the other juniors will realize it’s better for them to have two solid year under their belt instead of one. Big payday difference.

Plus, I actually think they’ll want to get their degree before they leave, even if we win it all.

The Clemson game did very little for me. I could tell by the first few series, esp. Clemson’s, that it was going to be a shootout and could go either way.

When I saw Sharpton and the DTs fall for fake after fake after fake I knew they were going to move the ball. Then the kickoffs were shaky so I wasn’t too surprised when Spiller housed one. The final play was a bit of a surprise though. But when we couldn’t run the ball and run out the clock I didn’t think we’d win it.

  111. avatar Captain Optimist says:

UNC was similar. You could tell our OL just didn’t have the strength to handle their DL. Then when Jacory got long-ball fever because we couldn’t run the ball at all basically, I knew it was going to be a long day.

Really, the games we lost all had a similar feel to them, namely, we came out FLAT. We didn’t look sharp and strong. Even in some of the games we won we came out flat but eventually picked it up.

The only game we really came out on fire for was GT.

So if there’s any serious recurring issue I’ve seen it’s the flat play from the beginning.

I THINK this will change with this group of players but I want to SEE IT to believe it.

    There you go Canez,. ;-)

Cav JJ should have never seen the field last year IMO, EVER!!! That in itself is a problem.

Those teams weren’t better than us. We lost because of one or more of the reasons I posted before. It definitely was not because of a lack of talent.

If those teams all had better players than we did then how can you possibly have any optimism for this year? All of the teams regressed and we are the only one that went the other way??

Blame it on 45 int’s or poor tackling or missing thumb or cold weather or the rain or Shalala is on the rag or whatever you want but this team is above average at best and until I see otherwise NOTHING is going to change my mind because at this point we ain’t seen jack shyte but alot of talking and hyping.

Bro who was ready to step in and take his place? Berry?? In spots but he still isn’t the blocker JJ was.

And if you’re looking at the squad last year and honestly saying we had more talent than the team’s we lost to you put the O in Optimistic.

Even I didn’t entertain such notions, not after watching FAMU and UCF’s DL give our boys fits. It became clear they played the best they could as a unit in those first four games.

Whipple could hide it for so long.

And I’m not saying anoint them. I’m saying they’re going to be a serious step up and over last year.

2000-2001 levels?? Nah. We don’t have the combination of talent, experience and time in one system those teams did. That’s going to take a couple of years cause those cats were firing on all cylinders.

BUT I expect them to show some glimmers of that level of play here and there.

  120. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

As far as optimism vs realism, I like the counterpoints because it just confirms by koolaid induced optimism. Every time I’m asked who I think wins the NC, I say Miami, because I think they can. On Mike’s preseason poll, I had the U at number 1. Why not the U?

Mike, regarding Robert Smith, I had an interesting conversation with him waiting in line to board a plane earlier this year. The gist of our conversation was why doesn’t the media show Randy more “love”. It was my complaint, not his. This was before RS signed the extension. Without going into too much detail, his basic response was about “expecations” at Miami. I will say this, he’s a really nice guy. Very polite and a real gentleman. Hard to admit because he’s from OSU, but really very sharp, humble and easy to talk with.

So anyway, I’m going with UM winning the NC. Call me delusional, but this is the year!!!!

  138. avatar Calvin says:

esteban, i understood what bennie blades was trying to say man, but the comparison from a physical and game changing standpoint is on 2 dfferent levels. I saw all of them play, bennie, ed reed and SEAN TAYLOR, from a physical standpoint, no one came close to SEAN TAYLOR, ball hawking, all 3 were, but as far as putting fear in people, nobody did that better than SEAN TAYLOR.

As far as this team and what it will do this year, that’s ball every game. Canez1, you right, the games this team lost, they all had the same xact feel. The team came out to flat. The reason being is, we had 2 runningbacks, who by nature were flat when it counted the majority of the time. So when defenses would key in on takng away our passing game, we didn’t have a runningback back their who could basically bust the running game wide open like the way damien berry use to come in and do, that’s why people were calling for him to be the starter. He was a game changer back their. Now we insert damien, mike james and miller, we definitely got a home run hitter in miller, damien berry is good from 40 yards on in. mike james, he’s get us down field and run between the tackles and surprise people with his speed. The point being, our offense won’t be as flat all game simply because with that much offensive talent and speed on the field, at some point, somebody is going to break a play wide open and infuse the whole team like it was back in the day. one bomb and the route had just begun.

A defensive coordinator can only hope to be able to have a strong front 4 again us, otherwise, if the have to bring more pressure than just 4 guys, that’s leave to many 1 on 1 coverages that whole game, i like our chances when a team does that. All the speculation is basically just about over, at this point, og cupcakes, you can do the count own everyday all day.

  148. avatar Calvin says:

Yeah, seems like they going after unc a whole lot faster than what they did at usc. Took them about 5 years seems like to come to some type of conclusion on usc, with unc, they trying to take it out on their current players, which i think would be a fair trade off for any program, if they punish the players that are currently on the team, than that was caught up in whatever the hell the nc2a keeps saying player are getting caught in, in those current players get punished, than the school shouldn’t be put on probation after that. Who cares if vontae davis paid the way for austin to go and do his thing, that guy is already at unc, he’s not be recruited, all this, “amateur athlete” talk being the reason other guys can’t touch money without some type of repercussion, whatever. He’s a senior, how is that going to affect his play, he’s trying to get drafted, so he’s looking to make plays on the field and not get hurt.

In fact, if austin is not allowed to play this year, that’ll actually be better for him and whoever his agent is that he might pick, because the agent definitely doesn’t want him to get hurt. i just hate playing against a watered down team. Like playing fsu this year without jamarcus fortson, i luv competing against guys like that. Hopefully the rumor of burney and the other kid isn’t true, we owe them too.

Meanwhile, on to sam shields, the best part i like about shields making plays in the preseason, especially that last one is, the reaction of his teammates after he got that last pick. 2 players i thought should’ve been playing db was jenkins(be it safety or corner) and shields. jenkins luv to hit as well, had he played on the defensive side of the ball, he would’ve been a draft pick, not sure where, but he would’ve gotten drafted. devin hester should’ve always been on the offensive side of the ball while here as well, i never liked him at cornerback. Just glad to see shannon has that eye for putting players where they have a better opportunity to succeed. fsu is already doing it with xavier rhodes(mark stoops mark already).

We’re going to have to be precise in our passing game against fsu and those db’s as long as stoops is their. With shannon on our side though, he’s not about being out done no matter how excellent the coaching might be on the other side.

cav, that’s why we already know, that defense that was being played with shannon as the d-coordinator, and when he was a player, that’s what he’s trying to infuse in this team and that’s the type defense he’s expecting us to start playing here as well.

Was talking to the maintenance man out my way, (a UM fan) and after some interesting debating, we came up with this philosophy……….

There are Elite teams, Great teams, Very Good, ect.,

An ELITE team would obviously go 12-0 vs this schedule.
A great team probably goes 11-1, maybe 10-2.
A very good team would at least go 9-3.

I expect this bunch to AT LEAST be a very good team. So I guess I at least expect to be 9-3. I also think that we need to at least appear in the ACC title game. If not, I would deem us officially “Behind Schedule”
This of course, barring extreme circumstances…….

Such as Jacory (knock on all the wood you own) Harris got knocked out for the season. Can’t exactly blame Shannon & Co. if AJ Highsmith doesn’t lead us to the crown, ya know.
Or, say if we and VT ended up 10-2, but one our losses was to them, so they went to the title game over us. But we still go to a bowl game, win, and end up 11-2. I refuse to call 11-2 vs THAT schedule, “Behind Schedule.”

    Is this an accurate assessment?

  162. avatar DZ8 says:

I think it’s accurate. But this is the thing with Miami fans (me most definitely included), I would be disappointed. No way we should lose to VTech this year… they curb stomped us last year and its at home this year.

That’s the only hope for real, and even then they have to hope no RB cuts back and busts it open for 40. Too many weapons for Whipple this year, with almost no real weaknesses, just some areas we’d like to be stronger…OL But still I expect an upgrade of physicality from that unit. So he can really open up the playbook with few reservations.

I seriously expect more players to “takeover” games. Even last year, I don’t think anyone really took over a game, except maybe Berry (J12 doesn’t count). Players made plays in moments here and there but no one really took over.

This year I expect to see a few players take over games, on both sides of the ball.

I don’t know Peebs. I think you’re right about the money and him wanting UNC to be his last stop but I think he wants to or planned to make a big splash this year. He’s been talking a lot of shyt up there about them being The U and such, building hopes and expectations, then convincing all these players to come back.

I think he was banking on making some kind of run this year, esp. with LSU on the schedule who I think they could beat, fully-loaded.

But more importantly, I don’t think he’s able to reload there, otherwise he wouldn’t be so pressed about these guys returning for their senior year. If those four of five key defensive players aren’t in the lineup come LSU, we’ll see just how good a recruiter/developer he is, cause he should have the 2nd team chomping at the bit after being there four years. All these seniors he inherited or maybe bought.

To me, the fact that they haven’t been able to find a receiver like those two he had his first or second year, says everything. His leading WR is a converted LB.

It might be pretty but it ain’t SoFl that’s for damn sure.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out cause UNC takes its academic reputation much more seriously and FSU of UF.

HUGE changes this year bro. This surprised when you say this. Kids do learn and grow. ALL those great UM teams were full of RS juniors and sophomores and 5th year seniors. That shyt doesn’t happen overnight bro. Name the great UM player who was great as a frosh?? Morgan…Lewis…and that’s about it.

Irvin, Thomas, Hill…all RS’d and didn’t really ball out until their 2nd or 3rd years. Hell, look at our own Hank. From watching him his 1st and 2nd years I honestly didn’t think he’d amount to much. Come year 3 he’s a bona fide stud.

    It’s not rocket science.

And most importantly, we actually IMPROVE with graduation. You can’t expect your espresso to taste like espresso if you put a bunch of milk and sugar in it. Same with a team. If half your players aren’t EVER going to be ballers and the other half are immature but talented ballers, your performance will most likely be luke-warm, up and down, bright one half, shady the next.

Desmond Howard has Bama beating the Canes in the BCS Title Game.

    >>>>>>

If we’re in that game, playing sharp, we’ll beat them. Bama has trouble with legit passing teams. TX and AUB showed that quite clearly, and that was against last year’s defense.

People are sleeping on UF though. They won’t have the defense but they’re going to score points. Too much speed for that offense not to score a lot of points.

Cal, yeah I wanted UNC to be full strength too but if Butch doesn’t have a 2nd team that’s ready to step in, what does that say about his so-called recruiting greatness? Esp. when he comes down here and tries to slander Shannon.

Each of these games this year should bring out our best. That’s the thing you love about playing NFL like schedules but with more pressure because a L takes you out of the race.

It’s all there for the taking.

  173. avatar Esteban says:

i don’t care if UNC loses all their starters. its a long season. if we can blow out a team early and get the back ups in there and the starters some rest that only helps our chances for the season as a whole. i’m a firm believer in you beat what’s out there. if someone is hurt or suspended they ain’t out there and they ain’t on my mind.

i don’t either Mike…i used to. All good. I step a major step backward with my phone – hit up the pre-paid crowd to cut cost.

I was asking cause you can connect to Livestream through the Qik app using an Android phone. I’m in full pre-game show mode right now. Can have a live reporter type deal with that. at home games i got my brother who can help with his camera hooked up to a laptop. might actually get something hooked up.

Este, you’re funny. lol But you’re right. I just wanted to whoop Butch at full strength but an easier game would definitely be welcomed.

Google phone is cool. I used it yesterday and it could have a place. They just need to keep the price LOOOWWWW. Skype is doing it the smart way. I’ll be curious to see how much google charges for a land-line.

Great news on the TV studio. Y’all are about to go pro! haha I don’t know much about FAMU other than what MM01 has told us. I’ll be curious to see you breakdown.

Check out this nugget on LA from Gorten…BG’s earlier statement was on target but I’m not sure he got the little fine print at the end. Check it out BG, Truth et al and give us your prediction. I say LA will have to prove himself a bona fide game-breaker at KR or PR to be worth it.

Going by the Hurricanes roster as of Aug. 16, there are 85 players on scholarship. UM officials wouldn’t disclose whether any player has been asked to or voluntarily given up his scholarship. There has been no announcement of a player leaving the team.

UM officials did confirm that reserve quarterback Spencer Whipple, son of offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, is among the players on scholarship.

    Why is that notable?

As you remember, Shannon’s son, Xavier, was not on scholarship when he played for the ‘Canes. Xavier Shannon qualified for tuition remission from the university because his father is an employee.

Spencer Whipple’s case would be different as a walk-on, though, since his dad was hired in Jan. 24, 2009.

That’s because UM policy is that “Dependents of employees hired on or after September 1, 2002 are eligible for tuition remission after completion of one full year of full-time regular service at the rate of 70 percent during years two through five, 85 percent during years six through ten and 100 percent thereafteafter

Canez1, the main thing about this year and what we saw in the losses last year, don’t sleep on the fact that alot of guys were being humble and biding their time and holding back when it came to speaking up. Take for instance, after that hit ray ray put on demarco murray, that fire he showed after that play, you could tell he was still trying to hold back, i know marcus robinson was trying to prevent him from getting a penalty, but at the same time, a guy like ray ray, coming into his 2nd year, he’ll feel alot more free to express himself. A guy like brandon harris, the real emotion guys are starting to take ownership of this team, they pass that fire off to other guys who have been waiting to spring loose. Also keep in mind the physical aspect of the game, when we reading now, that a guy like orlando franklin, has gotten down to 310 pounds cause he wants to play 99.9% of the plays now, which means last year he was lined up alot but although lined up, he wasn’t effective on all the plays he could’ve been effective on. This year, at 310, better shape, should make a bigger difference, same with the rest of the guys on the team, that’s part of the reason we’d see signs of greatness and than it would taper off during games.

This year, the majority of the team will have more stamina to play at a higher level a whole lot longer now. iwas looking at the Miami vs nebraska 1995 championship game on classic today. i realized the biggest difference now is, you right, in the losses we did come out flat, but i’m looking at this game today, and started remembering how when we deferred to the 2nd half and kicked off, we had guys getting downfield and stopping oppossing teams before they reached the 20 yard line. Guys came out fired up from the word go on special teams. That’s the tone shannon is trying to bring back and that’s what he wants to see, guys fired up and seeking to destroy on special teams, but not with some fake bravado, he ain’t wit all that.

I remember saying last year, andrew smith from a physical standpoint made the most impressive jump from his freshman year to his sophmore year, now he didn’t get any sacks last year but he made real good plays, against g-tech and usf come to mind. That’s a guy, a so called 2 star that came in, and all he’s done is work his way onto the football field and improve every year. Alot of people saying we been playing to uptight, but shannon knows what he’s doing and understands the process. I know i heard luke saying that’s the main question he was going to ask is, when is he going to turn them boys loose. if their ever was a year to let guys play free, it’s this year, but shannon want guys to play with that fire, he just wants it to be from guys who’ve actually earned it and can actually do it, none of that jump up and down on somebody’s logo crap and than lose the game. So shannon understood that this team needed to be more physical in the trenches, we made every o-line we played against look great for the most part. allen bailey was getting to qb’s and applying pressure off the muscle, in comes petri and technique, hurtt talked about guys shooting their hands but didn’t really know how to teach it. petri dish is forcing Greatness precision & precise technique all the time. Once guys get in games and see it starting to work, the more and more they’ll really apply it, a guy like andrew smith is sold on it.

As far as people jumping on the bandwagon or drinking the kool aid, it’s 2 fold. You got a lot of people in the media now who either played against or watched the Dominant UM teams from the 80′s and 90′s who deep down inside, they want to see Miami back to being Miami, than you got guys who are actually basing their assesments from a pure football standpoint, and when they came down and witnessed what they witnessed compared to other teams around the country, they know exactly what randy shannon is doing and being quiet about.

I like when the weaknesses of this team was put up the other day, because all teams have weaknesses. I like that they put us and bama in the championship game, bama’s weakness is replacing their secondary this year and middle linebacker, while our weakness is more of replacing our middle linebacker and having an o-line gel pass blocking wise, because run blocking, this team will be a whole lot more physical doing that.

I’mma get back to that coming out flat point though. With the offensive threats we have now though, we got guys who can bust a game wide open at any moment now all over the field, the only real deal is, while we got a stable of runningbacks, to me they are 1 more year away from being a real dominant group collectively. We got the home run hitter in miller, and berry burst thru the line for 20 yards gains and than we got steady mike james, our most complete back right now.
