Eye of the Hurricane’s Florida A&M Preview

Here it is ‘Canes fans! The much anticipated start of the 2010 season is upon us. The expectations are high from the fans and pundits around the country. Miami comes in at #13 in both the AP and USA Today polls. There’s a wave of optimism and energy surrounding the program, and Florida A&M is the first opponent in the way on the road back to glory.

Here’s a closer look at Miami’s first gridiron foe, and we’ll compare the quality of all units for both teams, for this game and the rest of the season.

QB – Miami’s starter is junior Jacory Harris. He threw for 3,352 yards and 24 touchdowns last year. For UM to compete for the ACC championship this season, he must bring down his interception total from last year (17). Harris has a gunslinger mentality and is very confident in his abilities. He has an arsenal of weapons to choose from, and this should be another record-breaking year for J12.

Florida A&M will start sophomore Martin Ukpai. His experience is limited, but he does have the ability to throw. He’s a dual threat presence, and Miami has struggled in the past with running quarterbacks. He’s a better passer than last year’s starter, Curtis Pulley, who was the 2009 MEAC Player of the Year.

Advantage: Miami

RB – Senior Damien Berry (616 yards, 8 TDs), sophomore Mike James, and redshirt freshman Lamar Miller appear poised to share carries this upcoming season. Berry is a straight-line runner who runs between the tackles well and doesn’t shy away from contact. James is a do everything back that can block and catch. Miller is a threat to score from anywhere on the field, something UM hasn’t had in recent years. Senior Graig Cooper (695 yards, 4 TDs) is coming off major knee surgery and it’s still unclear what role the team’s leading rusher from last year will fulfill.

The Rattlers will hand the ball to running backs Philip Sylvester (Sr.) and Eddie Rocker (So.). Sylvester rushed for 455 yards on 112 carries with seven touchdowns. Rocker touched the ball 49 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Sylvester possesses 4.38/40 speed, and if he turns the corner he’s a threat to score.

Advantage: Miami

WR/TE – Miami owns the deepest and most talented wide receiving corps in the country. Senior Leonard Hankerson (45 catches, 801 yards, 6 TDs) is on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, junior Travis Benjamin (29 catches, 501 yards, 4 TDs) can’t be covered in tight man-to-man defense, junior Aldarius Johnson has the surest hands on the team, junior LaRon Byrd (33 receptions, 460 yards, 1 TD) is another physical presence, and sophomore Kendal Thompkins had a great spring and fall camp and is ready to break out. Sophomore’s Davon Johnson and Tommy Streeter could probably start almost anywhere else in the country. Senior Richard Gordon, junior Chase Ford, and freshman Asante Cleveland will rotate at tight end. Gordon is the only player with FBS experience.

FAMU has a couple of productive receivers in senior Isaac West (36 receptions, 641 yards, 2 TDs) and junior Kevin Elliot (44 catches, 554 yards, 7 TDs). FAMU runs a spread-offense, so receiver numbers should be elevated. The tight end position isn’t utilized often in this version of the spread. There’s no way the Rattlers can match Miami athletically or come close to the depth UM owns at these positions.

Advantage: Miami

O-Line – Orlando Franklin is on the watch lists for the Lombardi and Outland Trophies, and along with fellow senior Joel Figueroa, will occupy the tackle spots. Road-graders Brandon Washington (So.) and Harland Gunn (Jr.) will play guard, and junior Tyler Horn will man the center position. UM has experience on the edges, but the interior lacks extensive playing experience. What they lack in experience they make up for in size. This should be an outstanding run-blocking unit.

The Rattlers got some FBS experience with the transfer of LG Steven Robinson (So.) from Central Florida. RT Christopher Sands (Sr.) and junior Brandon Curry return and could be all conference performers. The biggest difference between FBS and FCS schools is usually the size and talent along the lines, and this case is no different. Franklin could be a first round draft pick.

Advantage: Miami

D-Line – Ends Allen Bailey (Sr.) and Adewale Ojomo (Jr.), along with junior Marcus Robinson and sophomore Olivier Vernon will take turns torturing opposing quarterbacks this season. Tackles Curtis Porter (So.) and junior Micanor Regis along with sophomore Marcus Forston will anchor the middle. This is a deep and talented defensive line.

A&M doesn’t have quite the size upfront that Miami does, but there is some returning talent. Senior DE Kendrick Washington and NG Nicolas Hammond (Jr.) return. This is another case where the visitors can’t match the depth of the Hurricanes.

Advantage: Miami

LB – Miami returns 2 starters from this group, junior Sean Spence and senior Colin McCarthy. McCarthy is the leading returning tackler with 95 stops. Ramon Buchanan (Jr.) and Kylan Robinson (Sr.) will rotate at an OLB spot, but the depth is thin and all the backups are freshman. McCarthy is a Butkus Award Candidate.

FAMU returns a trio of linebackers. Junior LB Alvis Graham (Jr.) led the team in tackles with 69. Sophomores Jerod Brisbon (31 tackles) and John Williams (34 tackles) also return, giving the Rattlers a solid and capable unit. Neither units can afford injuries this season.

Advantage: Miami

CB/S – Brandon Harris (Jr.) is on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, and opposite him is senior starter DeMarcus Van Dyke at corner. Backing them up will be speedy sophomore Brandon McGee and veteran Ryan Hill (Sr.). At safety, Vaughn Telemaque (So.) and big-hitter Ray Ray Armstrong (So.) lurk. Depth is decent, but the most talented backups are freshman.

The Rattlers have a tremendous secondary. Corners Qier Hall (Sr., 42 tackles, 3 INTs, 6 PBU) and Curtis Holcomb (Sr., 35 tackles, 2 INTs, 3 PBU) return to give them two solid starters. Free safety Greg Harvey (Jr., 46 tackles) and strong safety John Ojo (19 tackles) provide good run support. One has to wonder what’s going through their minds as they prepare to face the Hurricanes receiving corps.

Advantage: Miami

K/P – There’s not many programs that can say they have a better kicker or punter. Matt Bosher (Sr.) was 14-for16 in field goals last season and is currently on a 90 straight extra-point attempt streak. He also averaged 42.5 yards per punt, and pinned teams inside the 20 yard line 23 times out of 51 punt attempts.

Rattlers punter Branden Holdren (So.) averaged 36.8 yards per punt last season, and returning kicker Trevor Scott (Jr.) was just 12 of 22 on field goal attempts.

Advantage: Miami

Coaching – UM’s Randy Shannon is 21-17 overall. In his first three seasons he has appeared in two bowl games and has yet to appear in the ACC Title game. Let’s hope he can correct that this season. Mark Whipple whipped a dismal Miami offense into shape last season, and he now has his whole system in place. Defensive line coach Rick Petri should enhance the defensive line’s play.

Head coach Joe Taylor is 17-6 in two seasons at FAMU, and boasts a 214-82-4 overall record in 30 seasons, including four national championships during his tenure at Hampton. Shannon has won championships as defensive coordinator and graduate assistant at Miami, but doesn’t come close to the 30 years of experience and winning that Taylor owns. Whipple’s national championship at UMass and professional experience even the staffs out.

Advantage: Tie

I guess so Mike…of he’s just flapping lips in a jail cell then nothing will come of it.

But if he does get a book out it It is my opinion that it will be a huge media extravaganza.

The things I’m hearing are summed up in the following email that I received about the “tell all” book:

He sounds like a scorned woman to me … “I really, really loved him but……..then he dumped me and I feel so used!!!!” Like he didn’t know he was being used? He thought they really liked him for his “personality”?

This was written by a woman, so there’s no sexest implication … just a true reaction … doesn’t mean that it won’t become a big deal, as mentioned in a previous post …

  6. avatar The Truth says:

Mike – don’t worry about this putz. It’s just a bunch of hot air right now coming from a douchebag intentionally trying to hurt the program.

He can say anything he wants – what can he prove and what can the NCAA confirm – that’s all that matters. From where I stand there’s going to be very little that is true, and that can be proven or corroborated.

I promised myself earlier that I wasn’t going to comment or waste my time or energy worrying about what this low-life scumbag – stealer of grandma’s pension – has to say. So that’s it for me. I will not give his existence the privilege of my acknowledgment. Final word: make good use of your next 20 years in the pokey.

BG and Este, y’all are sounding like pros already! haha Good work.

Thanks bro. We are working hard on it. We improve show by show. We still got some things to work out and get better at but we are getting there. Thanks for the support and keep listening.

  10. avatar The Truth says:

I hope it works out that way CCC…

  11. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

Gotcha truth. Just remember this: unsubstantiated allegations mean NOTHING.

  12. avatar Canez1 says:

This thing will explode soon. No doubt about it.

I can here ESPN winding up as we speak.

Whether it goes anywhere after that we will see. Where there is smoke there is almost always fire.

    Recruiting WILL be bruised regardless.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

  13. avatar The Truth says:

They won’t all be unsubstantiated…please don’t let your orange and green sunglasses blind you from that. Miami is bigtime football and bigtime football always has those little things that get swept under the rug. It’s a fact.

This guy wants to lift the rug and point at the dirt and see how many people will care.

The good news right now its just lip flapping, but I would have to imagine there is a publisher out there that would welcome this book. When it does get published it will get a lot of press.

    Then we’ll see who cares…

  14. avatar The Truth says:

    …the NCAA will care.

It’s Miami we are talking about.

I am not trying to be the bearer any gloom and doom prophesy. I just saw a few posts dismissing this guy and I can 1,000% tell you he has definitely had his name in the mouths of players during the last few years. His claims are from Butch/Cokers times into Randy’s tenure.

Randy Shannon wants nothing to do with guys like him. Never wants them around. there are many types of boosters. He is the type that’ll get you in trouble. That is why he wasn’t welcome and why he is writing this book.

He is looking to shave years off his sentence. He went to the Feds with his info…who does that? They don’t care whether he is honest about the Miami football program or not. But if he can come up with enough info that has a decent amount of legitimacy the NCAA WILL care…and they WILL look into it.

I don’t care how you slice it…that is NEVER something to just dismiss.

So all i am saying is, this guy is POTENTIALLY very dangerous to the Hurricanes.

    He’s not a “nobody”.

Giving me a bad feeling. We cannot afford to be weak at that position again.

    GO CANEZ!!!!!

    >>>>>>>

He’s probably sitting out so Johnson can get as many reps and prep as possible. He seems to be the one who needs the most work. Then Seantrel seems to be making moves on the 2nd team, so it builds even more depth.

  16. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Truth, as long as we’re not looking like UNC or USC or even Meeechigan, I’m not really concerned about it. The guys sounds like a sleaze but he clearly was throwing around money at a time when the school needed it thanks to Coker. Plus, I’m sure Coker didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so he probably let the guy come around as much as he wanted.

You think it’ll help that Dee was here then? haha

  17. avatar The Truth says:

    Moving on…

Don’t read too much into who is starting in practice or even at FAMU at some positions. Remember, this is game one. There are BOUND to be misterious “injuries” that pop up because a kid skipped a few classes or maybe spent a little too much time trying to get with Snookie over at Klutch.

I am EXTREMELY excited about this team. I am hoping my Irish brethren (in Ireland – NOT ND) can float over a leprechaun and cast some good luck over the team with regards to injuries. I think they have more than enough BIG TIME playmakers to score at will on offense and Special teams.

I think this teams will grow into something dominant if they can collectively get their confidence up within their roles.

I am praying to God that I can come up with a plan for thursday because right now it’s not looking good as far as me getting out there to the game. I don’t want to miss ONE SECOND of this team. I think it’s going to be a very exciting teams to watch and I can’t wait!

  18. avatar CanesCanesCanes says:

Ok – this is the last thing I’m saying on this: let’s see what he can prove. The rest is just hot air. And to say it will hurt recruiting at this early stage is just premature. We’ll see.

Interesting point. You mean individually or as the their individual role fits with the team’s/unit’s? Like, all the parts of a machine moving smoothly together…If so this would make sense that there’s still some ??s for this.

You think Seantrel passes Johnson this season?

  24. avatar The Truth says:

I believe Seantrell is going to play in every game this season. I don’t believe JJ will.

I’m talking collectively Cav…they need to be confident in their individual roles and if they all can do it I think this team explodes

  27. avatar Captain Optimist says:

  28. avatar WICane says:

    What is this guy’s angle?
    1. This book will not repay his creditors. Even Tom Clancy couldn’t pay off $9,000,000 with 1 book.

    2. Prosecutors already turned him down on his offer to turn in UM and its players, so this won’t help him stay out of jail or reduce his sentence.

    3. He claims he wants to out UM and its players because the players ignored him once they get to the NFL, but if that’s the case, why wait until he’s putting on his orange jumpsuit to tell the tale? If he was so harmed by them in recent years, why hasn’t he spoken up before? Also, if he has so much respect for the administration and athletic dept as he claims, why do this right after USC had the hammer drop for likely the identical allegations? He knows the NCAA is cracking down hardcore, so why spoon feed them some of the worst possible violations and harm the athletic dept? I don’t buy that as his motive any more than I buy the $ argument.

Maybe he wants to keep the spotlight, or maybe he wants to deflect it to um. Neither makes much sense. But, clearly he isn’t doing it for the money and isn’t getting a sentence reduction out of it. So why?

Worst part though, I do think that whatever his motives, his book never leaves the ground without some pre-publicity. In order to generate interest, he WILL leak portions of the accusations he will make. I guarantee ESPN has already started developing taglines and old footage to incorporate into the latest miami-gate. I think that is the most dangerous part of this issue. It will leak slowly, 1 piece at a time. We will see the old dancing, Uncle Luke, pay for play and criminal records in the same clip where we hear the latest allegations. Public opinion is a killer and the facts won’t matter.

Right now there is nothing to report, except that a known criminal is accusing UM of misbehaving again. That is not enough to crucify UM. If he wants a book deal, he will slowly leak the juicy contents of the book to tease the public into buying the book. (see tim donaghy’s personal playbook) The moment real allegations come out, we will hear them repeatedly on a daily basis and true or not UM will be guilty until proven innocent. Bad-boys once again. The reputation isn’t going to help, the inevitable rumors of upcoming probation will hurt recruiting, and all of this will happen before the NCAA even considers investigating. So even if we’re innocent, we’ll be back to being thugs long before our name is cleared.

I’m with Truth. Even if UM is 100% cleared of any wrongdoing, even being associated with the allegations is harmful. We just won’t know what the harm is until accusations begin to leak.

Looks like the game will be on ESPN3 and as of now, I don’t have that station. I’ve heard though, that ESPN3 is a part of the negotiation, and that they expect a deal ‘by thurs’. I NEED that channel by thurs!!!! I wonder, if they do the deal by Thurs, does that mean I’ll have the channel by thurs night?

  32. avatar JSQ says:

    Um, T, I think you meant to e-mail me that . . .

  33. avatar JSQ says:

Yeah, WI Cane, I think I was supposed to be a flight attendant or cheerleader instead of attorney.

    Sigh. My misspent youth.

    Back to drafting this complaint.

  34. avatar Captain Optimist says:

WI, I actually think this won’t be a big deal long-term or even short-term because the climate is so full of shadiness and so many programs are being exposed for some serious cacka, more serious than a flimsy, convict ex-booster who claims he hung out and partied with players. Seriously, Coker may have been soft in coaching but he, Dee et al couldn’t possibly have let this douche do things like USC and UF and UNC officials and coaches have been doing.

  35. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Just on arrests alone you’d think the NCAA would be investigating UF. If the U had 30+ arrests over a 3 year period someone would be investigating.

I know the double-standard applies to the U but I’m just saying I’d be amazed if Coker let players get dangerously close to this douche.

  36. avatar WICane says:

    Cpt,
I would agree wholeheartedly if this guy claimed this happened at WI. But, it is happening to one of the most hated teams in all of sports. My own brother hates UM with a passion even though I went there and they have hardly ever played against WI, not to mention the only time they played in recent memory WI won. My own brother believes every negative thing that is written. He thought Brian Pata must have been involved in something criminal. B-Ware probably started the exchange of gunfire…etc….If the guy was accusing WI, Iowa, some other team without our colorful history, the entire country would very easily write him off as a criminal with no credibility. Unfortunately, he’s accusing UM. We just don’t get the benefit of the doubt.

If the whole allegation is that he bought drinks while hanging out with players, he would have had nothing to offer the Feds, and wouldn’t have enough material for a book. Then also, I wouldn’t feel like this guy was the least bit of a threat. If he’s trying to buy his way out of jail time, or trying to write a book though…….he’s either got something extremely juicy, or is inventing something really juicy. Either way, the very fact that he’s tried these 2 avenues, it’s gotta be juicy.

Lastly, UM is the crowning achievement on any investigation. With USC, UF, USC all out there and in different amounts of trouble, when UM gets thrown into the mix those other programs will have a long sigh of relief, because we will be a magnet for negative media attention. UM is at it again…as opposed to UNC who has never made natinoal news for troublemaking.

On the other hand, maybe he did just buy drinks and handed out very small amounts of cash that the Univ had no hope of discovering. That wouldn’t merit putting in the time or money for a publisher to print and market. Even with UM as the target of the book, free drinks won’t be worth the investment and this will go away. I just think a guy like this must be smarter than that…to even approach the Feds or a publisher with something like that and honestly believe they would be interested…

  37. avatar Hurricane Randy says:

Credibility is going to be a big deal and he is already behind in that department and that is going to determine whether or not he gets a reputable publisher. He has to have some slam dunk evidence or else they won’t take the chance on being sued. How can he say he admires Dee, Hocutt and Shala and then try to bring down the program they represent. The fact that he is accusing the U, gets him an automatic audience

I can see Pat Forde salivating already.

CaneCanesCanes, my advice to him is to hang onto the soap when he gets in the shower.

Randy, it would be nice if that’s the way the publishing business works, but unfortunately publishers seem to get a pass on what’s written in books…

Yeah, Truth’s right about publishing. The his word against their word makes it easy for them to get away with a lot of crap.

Does his dad still coach at St. Thomas?

DURON CARTER TO CANES?: A source has told me The U is among schools interested in WR Duron Carter (Cris’ son, of St. Thomas Aquinas), who flunked out of Ohio State and is now attending a community college in Kansas. Stay tuned.

    >>>>>>

That could be very interesting. I think he might actually flourish at the U. He has a lot of talent from the little I saw of him.

I know several season tix holders who put in credit card info to get tix to OSU and were denied when UM ran out of their allotment. Count me as one if several thousands that bought their tix on the open market (scalp) from OSU fans looking to make a quick $.
    I’ll estimate 7 to 10k U fans in the stadium on 9/11.

  65. avatar Calvin says:

Who cares about that shapiro dude. i don’t give a damyum what he writes ,as long as we don’t go on probation we straight, and with randy shannon bringing back our winning ways right on time, we’ll be alright.
Hearing marcus robinson having fits getting around seantrel henderson is good news, that means he can handle the quick guys as well as the obvious power guys. After this year, this o-line is going to be hell, and than they gotta tackle the runningbacks too, lol. Just think, and o-line with brandon washingotn, seantrel henderson, brandon linder and jermaine johnson or maybe even ben jones, and than harland gunn or jared wheeler, just mentality of those guys right their alone is old school. I’m looking at this o-line being one of the best o-lines to ever play at UM in the next year or 2. We’ll have a few units that’ll have the potential to be all-time units real soon.

Canezilla, that’s one of the post of the year right their on that catch about Bands:Advantage-FAMU all day long!

I’m tired of waiting to whoop ohio st.’s azz, let’s get this game over with on thursday, and after that game, i want to see the players start walking out of joe robbie stadium onto 95 and just start walking towards columbus ohio in full pads as soon as the whistle blows. I’m also looking for the back-ups to get a whole lot of work in this upcoming Famu game too as well. That’s the key, wasn’t to long ago people were counting on george robinson being a sleeper at wide-out from central, now we got wide-outs all over the place. We got a stable of runningbacks just as deep as wide-outs just in experienced right now.

The way i see it, the closer the game, the more mike james will play and be the starter. The more the point spread, the more we’ll see all the other backs as well. Going to be fun seeing miller take on to the house and get the team fired up. This offense needs to put up 21 points or more in the 1st quarter thurdsay night and than from their, just sit the starters out so they’ll be real hungry to eat come sept 11.

Love that image of the players just walking straight to Columbus. And yeah, that OL is going to be hell next year and quite possibly real solid this year.

Anything less than 21 in the 1st this week would be a source of concern. I expect to see a lot of talent. Correct me if I’m wrong but won’t a player like Storm Johnson try his hardest to make a case for PT in games like this? haha This is when you know things are returning to normal.

i doubt carter comes to the u..His family was so high on him going to ohio state.Chris carter and his wife had him at ohio state hospital thats the love they have for the school..Now do u think he would let his dad down and not go back to o state?Plus i dont think he could have the grades to come 2 miami!

Zilla, if he goes JC and gets his grades there he’ll be fine. Great points about OSU though. It would make more sense for him to go back there.

  81. avatar Captain Optimist says:

Here’s how important prep is for teams….OSU trying to prepare for Marshall……from the Columbus Dispatch.

    >>>>>>>

The Ohio State defense has been trying hard to focus on season-opening opponent Marshall.

The No.2 Buckeyes don’t feel they’ve been distracted, even if there is the looming national showdown with No.13 Miami on Sept.11. The challenge is that they’re preparing for a Marshall offense that’s largely unknown.

“It’s a lot harder, the first game, you can’t go on past films,” OSU linebacker Ross Homan said. “It’s a whole new system, so you really have to get ready for everything.”

The Buckeyes might as well watch the movie We Are Marshall for all the good last year’s video of the Thundering Herd can do for them. Since then, Marshall has brought in a new coach in Doc Holliday, and he’s put together a band of assistants, led by offensive coordinator Bill Legg, who have Marshall ties but have spent most of their coaching life outside of Huntington, W.Va.

The OSU defensive coaches and players have been trying to splice together a picture of what they might see Thursday night.

“It’s difficult,” cornerback Chimdi Chekwa said. “You go back to where the new staff coached before and you watch their offense. Then you go back to last year’s film (of Marshall) and you watch their offense. Then you put all that together.”

So the Buckeyes no doubt have watched video of Purdue’s offense when Legg was there in the mid-2000s as co-offensive coordinator under “basketball on grass” coach Joe Tiller. They’ve checked out the diverse attack that included some wildcat plays that Legg orchestrated the past two years as offensive coordinator at Florida International.

They probably dug up video from last year of South Dakota, where Marshall quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Tony Petersen worked as an assistant. Before that, he was co-coordinator at Minnesota when school record-setting quarterbacks Bryan Cupito and Asad Abdul-Khaliq were there, and then was an assistant at wide-open Iowa State in 2007.

And Petersen sprang from Marshall roots, where he was an all-conference quarterback in the mid-1980s, then returned to help coach two passers of considerable note, Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich, before heading to other parts of the country.

Holliday was an assistant at Florda in the mid-2000s, when the Gators spread the field offensively, winning a national championship in 2006 with two quarterbacks – Chris Leak and Tim Tebow. OSU fans remember, of course, the way the Gators handled OSU in the national championship game.

Put those pieces together, then add this quote from Legg that was in the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail in the spring:

“It’s kind of back to the future. Go back to what we were doing when I was here with Byron (Leftwich). That’s kind of the foundation of the offense.

“From a terminology standpoint, we are always trying to find a way to simplify. The basis of the offense is still that: Spread the field, take advantage of what the defense gives you and keep it simple for 10 of the 11 guys.”

But Marshall is trying to do that with most of the same players who ran a conventional, ball-control offense under former coach Mark Snyder last season. It was a system in which the receivers did more blocking than catching and quarterback Brian Anderson did more handing off than passing.

With an offensive line beset by injuries, the reports out of Huntington haven’t always been glowing about the offense, either. So what should be the OSU defense’s focus?

“We just have to be ready for anything,” defensive end Cameron Heyward said. “Marshall is coming in with the mentality that they’re going to upset us. They’re not going to sit back and just let us win. So it’s going to be a fun game. I’m looking forward to it.”

Miami Hurricanes 2010 Season Preview at allcanes (http://blog.allcanes.com/) with a looooooong, double-calvin post full of well-written stuff (as always).
they drink the positive koolaid . . . and when something goes wrong, they always maintain the larger-picture movement toward greatness that shannon is bringing.

i include a couple of their ideas below:

“Anyone who’s followed this crazy game of college football over time has learned that best teams don’t always win and the worst ones don’t always lose. Championship teams are generally talented and well-coached, but an element of luck always plays into the equation, as well.

Simply put, are the football gods with you or against you?

Solid as Alabama was last season, if not for the outstretched hand of Terrence Cody, blocking a potentially game-winning field goal attempt against lowly Tennessee, the Tide aren’t in the championship game. Same to be said for the counterparts in Texas, who needed Instant Replay and some clock scrutiny to earn a shot at their own destiny-changing kick, punching their ticket to Pasadena.”

    . . .

“Look back at 2009 and grade out this team based on what was accomplished versus where it started. Going 9-4 with a few signature wins on the heels of 7-6 was positive. Losing a second straight bowl game and dropping that shootout with Clemson (when riding a 5-1 record, ranked in the top ten and in the ACC hunt), big negatives that need to be corrected in 2010.

If you need further proof, just pop in a copy of last year’s 21-20 win over Oklahoma and follow it up with game footage from that 51-13 beat down in Norman back in 2007. Again, if you refuse to acknowledge the growth, you’re living in denial.”

    http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/caneswatch/2010/08/30/randy-shannon-graig-cooper-will-play-in-miami-hurricanes-opener/

    includes the following info:
“….Back-up fullback John Calhoun and freshman linebacker Travis Williams sustained season-ending injuries during fall practice.”
    that’s a shame.

“….Matt Bosher will handle kickoffs as well as place-kicking and punting duties. “We wanted Jake [Wieclaw] to do it, but Matt is probably five yards better than Jake and that’s a big difference,” Shannon said. “Matt has Jake in hangtime, too. But we’ll keep working Jake.”

too bad wieclaw still isn’t a worthy back-up . . . hope hopfinger can begin nailing some kickoffs before the end of the season.

  86. avatar autumn says:

sound familiar regarding the 2008 recruiting class?

“Ohio State’s ’08 recruits key to title run”
If Ohio State lives up to its billing and plays for a national championship, they will have the recruiting class of 2008 to thank. Two years later, Terrelle Pryor and Mike Brewster each have made 22 career starts and won two Big Ten titles and a Rose Bowl. When the Buckeyes open the season against Marshall on Thursday, seven teammates from the 2008 recruiting class should join them as starters, with four others important members of the two-deep roster expected to play. Four members of that 19-player class have transferred, but 13 of the 15 remaining should be right where they saw themselves when they signed — on the field a lot for a national title contender, with the Buckeyes ranked No. 2 in both preseason polls.

Not that it’s a prerequisite to being a good fan, but you can always tell the jock sniffers From guys that have actually played when they start harping on teams coming out flat – and it being s sign of neglegent coaching.

As if because someone gets up in front of you and cheerleads it’s going to make you run through a wall.

I personally HATE hearing that dumbass micheal Irvin pregame speech that he gave before FSU a few years ago.

    Why?

They lost. They didn’t exactly come out roaring either.

Cav – stop going back and forth with someone
than can’t even understand how stupid he is.

True motivation in sport is bred through competition. No amount of extrinsic motivation will sustain it’s self. Intrinsic motivation is the ONLY motivation that can keep a player moving forward through the rigors of competition – because it’s only then that the player recognizes that NO ONE is in control of their destiny other than themselves.

Real motivation is born within. Not everyone has it and not everyone is capable of sustaining it.

To develop a true sense of competition on a football team you need players that aren’t looking for that golden carrot – like Willie Williams. You need real talent that is equal, but for the nuances that separate the men from the boys.

You thrown them in the fire, promise them nothing and let them separate themselves from the pack.

You make them fear getting water so they don’t lose their spot in the lineup.

You can’t do that overnight. Or in one year or two if you don’t have players to begin with – 4 and 4 and 5 stars aside.

Randy Shannon is 20% responsible for motivating his players. He is responsible for setting up an environment of competition. He has done that.

He is responsible for finding a core of players that are willing to compete. He has done that.

The players are responsible for showcasing themselves and working hard to separate themselves from there competition. That includes the practice field as well as the games.

Any bozo that thinks a head coach is going motivate a player in ANY other facet is stupid. People don’t work that way.
